Speedy deletion nomination of Nu Phi Delta

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Nu Phi Delta requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Tikiwont (talk) 16:16, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is selective about subjects for articles; the criterion is called notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes places where anyone can post anything, like Myspace, Facebook, blogs; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have other people, independent of the subject, found it important and significant enough to write about?

Not many student organizations can pass that test, important though they may seem to their members and within the world of their college. National and international organizations may be notable, but individual chapters are unlikely to be - see Wikipedia:College and university article guidelines#Student life and WP:OUTCOMES#Education.

Wikipedia is specifically not for helping to advertise or promote anything - see Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion. In fact we strongly discourage people from writing about themselves or their own organizations, and you should read:

If you ask, but how will anyone hear about us if we can't write about ourselves? the brutal answer is, if no-one independent of the group is interested enough to write an article, that probably indicates that it is not notable in Wikipedia's sense, and we are not here to help make it well-known.

Before you produce a list of other fraternities who have articles, we know that many of our 3,000,000 articles are sub-standard, but do not regard that as a reason for admitting more, so that What about article X? is not accepted as an argument.

I am sorry to be so discouraging, and you are welcome to continue to develop the article in your user space if you think you can show notability, but you need to understand the height of the bar you have to surmount. Deletion discussions like WP:Articles for deletion/KCL Netball Club all too often record a lot of wasted energy and emotion put into something which never had a chance.

WP:Your first article is essential reading, and WP:Notability and WP:Notability (organizations and companies) are relevant. You can ask for comments on your draft at WP:Requests for feedback.
