Machinima Project

Hello Toni, I added my information on the Portal:computer graphics page, but it did not go where I wanted it to go, so I deleted my work, and realised it needed to be a new article, I tried to search how to do this and is waiting for a response from the teahouse, but somebody has told me not to edit that page again, Shall I not edit that page again and just work in the sandbox? Hi Nat, it looks like you're having some issues with understanding (a) how a wikipeida portal page works, and (b) what your assignment requires you to do. Let's approach each of these separately.
a. Have you read the information page about portals on Wkipedia? It's essential that you understand how portals work on Wkipedia. The essesntial infor is on this page: Wikipedia:Portal.
b. You do not have to manage to publish anything to the actual portal page, HOWEVER, once you understand how portals really work on Wikipedia, your task is to engage with the Macinima related pages across Wikipedia and ensure that these are also included on the computer graphics portal page, unless there are widely held objections by other Wikipedians active on that portal page. These will be captured through your interactions on the portal's talk page.
I also recommend you familiarise yourself with this page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Animation/Machinima work group.

Hi Lewis, you're required to do separate presentations about your own work. There will naturally be overlaps since you're working with someone else, but you will be assessed individually for the work you have done. Hi Sage, you're doing an excellent job with the courses wizard. Thank you! My comment about the North America-specific bits referred mainly to the terminology used to describe things: for example, in the UK a course is known as a module and faculty is not an academic member of staff but a gathering of academic departments. Having direct experience with both systems, I was not particularly thrown off by this. The one that specifically got me thinking was the semester description. 2013 Q1 means nothing to me and/or my students. Spring 2013 is confusing for most UK students, and possibly even (what you'd call) faculty (what we here call lecturers). In the UK, we'd describe what we're doing now as "2012/13 Semester 2". Thanks, this is very helpful. I'll try to root out as much of that terminology as possible the next time I revise the training. The "2013 Q1" bit doesn't mean anything in the US either, which is why we went with that format, to have a labeling system independent of the many different term systems and terminology out there. That said, it's a stop-gap at this point; I expect we'll want to do away with "term" altogether as something that has to be independently specified, and instead just calculate which cohort a class is in automatically based on the start and end dates, once the software can do that.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:13, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey Toni,

So, I am currently working on my assignment for the IEE and am trying to create something to add the the Computer animation page. I found on the talk page a user had explained they would like to find out the difference between Computer assisted and Computer generated animation. I have tried to put a little something together with the hope to add it to the article from research I have found and would like to ask if you could visit my sandbox and have a read over what I have written so far. Any ideas or adjustments you can relay to me would be a great help.

Hi Jade, before I answer your question, I should point out that I move your question to the bottom of my talk page. This is the normal Wikipedia convention for new questions/comments/messages on talk pages: they go at the bottom of the page, unless you're responding to something that was written earlier on the same page.

Hey, no probs. I'm sorry I got in on this course so late, but your students seem to have a good grasp already on appropriate writing style and sourcing. One of your students has expressed concern to me that student edits may be being removed by other editors purely because they are students. I have all of their articles and userpages on my watchlist and I haven't seen any pattern of this, so I don't know which articles or editors this involves. I have done machinima in 2nd life and still have account, land, and money there. I haven't logged in a month or so, but I suppose I should. There are good inworld machinima groups that may provide video in the proper format and licences for upload. I only have two uploaded. One I lost the source for the public domain song I used so I haven't transfered it to commons yet. I could upload it without music if needed. Are they aware that we have two articles that should be merged? Machinima: Virtual Filmmaking and Machinima. They had merge tags at one time but they seem to be gone now. One student did some massive changes right away that were partially reverted, I forget which article though. I gave a little advice to another at Talk:Computer_animation#Editing_this_page that you may wish to look at. They may also wish to adjust some of the Special:Preferences to make editing easier. That's right, they've been told that there are several things to watch out for. However, some of them tend to be bold and that's how we get some of the unpleasant changes we see as they learn the ropes. I haven't mentioned the gadgets yet, but that's a great suggestion. Wikimedia in Further Education

I've followed a soft redirect here from your Wikimedia UK profile. I'm just coming to the end of a 12 contract which has involved some contact with FE colleges in Wales. Although I'm a keen Wikipedian (I'm an admin on cy:wiki), I have no knowledge of the EdwWiki side. As we in Wales now have a sort of 'national WIR' for a year, I had a short discussion with two college representatives about the possibility of somehow blending in Wikimedia editing into some sort of extra credit activities, giving an example work done with HE in Czech Republic. I can deliver Wikipedia training myself, but I'm a little unsure of the practicalities of student/students editing articles and how a tutor can evaluate - is it just case of comparing changes in view history? What if there is an edit class etc? It needn't be accredited (at least for a pilot), but I was wondering if you have any pointers/suggestions on how a tutor goes about setting tasks? Stuart Harris

Greetings... Your students have been kind enough to dignify my efforts as AD of The Hamnet Players with a wikipage all its own. I appreciate that. User:AliceWicker and User:RaffyDaffy have also worked on a page about me personally, and I appreciate that too.

The page is not exactly inaccurate (at least not in any important respect), but it is unbalanced. Internet performance was only a tiny part of my life. I'm not moaning, not at all. However, I'd like to offer a glimpse of the real me in case your project can make use of it.

Many thanks for getting in touch with me directly. Yes, two of my students at the University of Hull started a page about The Hamnet Players a couple of years ago. Amazingly, one of them is still an active Wikipedian. While the page doesn't contain any great factual errors, it needs quite a bit of work to style it according to Wikipedia's manual of style. I'm aware that Internet performance is only a tiny part of your creative life, but I have frequently argued that you deserve even more credit for Hamnet than you have received. I firmly believe that your Internet performance work should continue to be recognized far and wide. This has most recently driven me to write an academic article for the next issue of the International Journal of Performance Art & Digital Media to mark 20 years since the first Hamnet Players production. My article adds very little factual information about your work, but offers a contextual and critical perspective on its relevance from a historical viewpoint.
While you have good reason to provide me and others with a glimpse of the "real" you as a whole person, I will continue to believe that your contribution to the history of performance and internet art has so far been understated. Wikipedia is not the (only or main) place to remedy that, but The Hamnet Players deserve to be remembered and admired by many more generations to come.
Meanwhile both The Hamnet Players and Stuart Harris could do with a substantial amount of attention from experienced Wikipedians, who could even improve them to the point where one of them can be considered for inclusion as a featured article. Perhaps this is a challenge that someone will take up as a way to mark the 20th anniversary of that historic first performance of Hamnet. --ToniSant (talk) 14:17, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)I noticed this and thought "That looks like something I could usefully do"... until I looked at the actual Stuart Harris article and felt defeated by its sadly low quality as an article. The opening sentence doesn't indicate why SH should be in Wikipedia; the second sentence is a grammatical muddle, etc. But I added the two external links from SH's "biocode" page, formatting the imdb one using the standard template, and have made a link to The Hamnet Players from the section which discusses them, so that's a start! It would be appropriate for SH to make a comment on the talk page on the lines he's done here (as per Wikipedia:Autobiography#If_Wikipedia_already_has_an_article_about_you), and then some interested editor might pick up the info and run with it. Hello Pam! As ever, you're a beacon of hope to us all who attempt to bring more new editors to Wikipedia. The initial muddle on the Stuart Harris article was created by my students, who were more keen to write a lot than understand how Wikipedia works. I have since changed the way I use Wikipedia in the classroom, and you'll notice that students who worked with me and other colleagues at our university, are much more restrained in their contributions.
It's always a joy interacting with you - you're the best sort of WikiJaguar!
I've also found that @StuHarris: engages with Wikipedians in a very pleasant manner, so I'm sure he'll take kindly to your comments and the specific suggestion to comment on the article talk page in a similar way to what he has done above. --ToniSant (talk) 17:24, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
