History of Plaid Cymru

Hello Rhyswynne! I will order Rhag Pob Brad: Cofiant Gwynfor Evans from Barnes & Noble but can not yet speak or read Welsh (though I am attempting to learn it). I was pleased to find that Dr. John Davies did read the book himself and wrote "Mae'r gyfrol hon yn garreg filltir bwysig yn hanesyddiaeth Cymru. Ceir yma ddadansoddiad manwl o yrfa gwladgarwr Cymreig pwysicaf yr 20fed ganrif, a chronicl hefyd o hanes y genedl dros drigain mlynedd a mwy. Camp neilltuol iawn . . ."

I look forward to your imput to the pages! For your questions:

Firstly, I don't deny that Saunders Lewis may have praised Hitler in the mid 30's, but so did Lloyd George (in 1936) and Winston Churchill praised Musollini [sp] in late 20's. This doesn't mean SL is not a fascist, but he could just be a man of his time more than anything else. We're not told who the other leading members are supposed to be.

I agree with you. I think NM is purposefully over emphasizing the characterization. But I need the quote from Lloyd George and Churchill though to refute it. Appearently he did get the information from Mr. Morgan. I will try and correct this, but will need others to suport this action as well, as NM has a history of page hawking and preventing others from making sourced changes and edits.

Secondly, and more importantly from a Wikipedia point of view, the "metaciously researched" quote of the "highly respected" Dr Morgan is pure speculation. Poor showing in early elections could be down to a number of factors, namely lack of funds and bad/no coverage from media.

Very true indeed. I do not know Dr. Morgan's work as well as I know Dr. Davies, so can not comment to his authority. But he is published and a valid source, though through NM's introduction to him it seems Dr. Morgan has an agenda.

Also, I'm reading a book about Gwynfor Evans at the moment, and SL plays a big part in the first part of the book. In it the author mentions how Plaid's opposition made a lot of the fact that SL was a Catholic as opposed to a fascist. Apparently the Welsh (and British?) population was quite anti-Catholic at the time. Possibly something to do with events in Ireland at the time?

Yes, the appearent anti-Catholic sensabilities of the Welsh was one of the reasons Lewis resigned as party leader in '39, according to Dr. Davies. However, just a few years before the party rejected one of his chief principles as not a fundemental part of the party. I do not get the sense that Lewis was faciest though in any of the material I have thus read. However, I do get the sense he tollerated hard line regimes to a degree though. Yes, there was a sense of suspicion on the part of U.K. authorities and the population regarding Irish nationalism, and by extension Welsh nationalism.

Are you proposing to insert a link to this page in place of certain sections of the main PC article?

yes, this is the intention. However, I would go further and completly redo the PC page to include more information on party structure and what it stands for, as opposed to history. History on the main page in my opinion should be very brief in light of having a new page for it.

a) although I can't fault them, the way you've split the different periods seem a bit random - in a way I prefer Normalmouth's splitting into decades. I split the periods according to party leadership, though named them differently. Within each section there is a subsection of the most important events during that time frame. Personally, I prefer this approach to NM's use of the decades... which to me seem boring. Prehaps though I can list the decades on the section titles? b) not sure about the way party leaders is presented (in a visual/wikipedia sense that is) This I copied from the other British party pages and from the US party presidential candidate pages. I thought it very neat myself. But because of how large the page has gotten, I am thinking on moving these to another page altogether. c) how do you decide the ideology of each person? I used Dr. Davies actually, and Mr Wiggly himself. Mr. Wiggle described his political views as "right wing," Dr. Davies described Lord Elis-Thomas as leftist. Givin the recent changes in PC, Jones is descibed as centrist. The early party leaders (Valentine and Lewis) were clearly right of center (I think Davies points to this too, but need to find the page). Evans was the most difficult to characterize though and I remain uncertin for him.

1) Although the Tynged yr Iaith radio talk and Cymdeithas yr Iaith's formation was beneficial to PC as it allowed them to concentrate on politics as you say, it wasnt SL intention for a seperate organisation to be set up. He intended PC to become more involved in welsh languagae campaigning. Yes, I see I have not clearly pointed that out. You are absoltely correct and it should be pointed out he wasnt looking for a new organization but wished for PC to direct this.

2) I've already forgotten the dates and the name, but PC set up a private radio station in the 50's, maninly as they were denied a party political broadcast on state radio. At the time there was a ruling that a party must contest all seats (i.e all UK seats) before they were granted a broadcast. As PC only contested Welsh seats, this was an obvious disadvantage. This would be GREAT to add!

Rhyswynne, Hello! Might you check out the updatged History of Plaid Cymru and offer your opinion thus far? Since mine and Normalmounth's debate have I received any impute on its construction. I know it needs more fleshing out, particularly in the Wigley and Elis presidencies section (almost all of that was taken from a sumerized version on the origional Plaid page.)Drachenfyre 10:11, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

I've not had a thorough read, but I don't see anything I'd disagree with (aging, I'm no expert on the subject). You've obviosly put a lot of work into it (and I can see NM mark there as well!) In 'Bards under the bed' bit, the references 49 and 50 only give a link to the current South Wales Police home page - should this not give at least a title of a report/book reference even if no on-line link is available?--Rhyswynne 11:28, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

I've stuck a final warning on his/her page and will feel justified in blocking him/her/them if they re-offend - but of course it can only be temporary. Hopefully they will think twice. To be honest, I've tried to avoid getting too heavily involved with the Welsh Wikipedians' noticeboard - Rhion gave up and went over to wicipedia because it was getting too much, and I know I could easily end up the same way. Greetings Wales community! We need your Voice! We need mediation and impute from the wider community who regularily contribute to articals of Wales interest. At issue is the use of a distinctive border around the country info box, as well title bar. The issue seems to have become a crusade against Wales by certin editors, who have almost never contributed to and practically never visit (by their own admission) the Wales page. I do not tust the motives of the editor, whome seems to be stalking my edits and reverting them purposefully. This editor even dismisses the colors of Wales red and green saying that Wales does not have any official colors! (quote: "I imagine that this use of "national colours" (of which Wales has none by custom or tradition)...", Unfortunatly, I must deal with these cyber bullying tactics if I am to contribute here. However, I implore the Wales commmunity to weigh in on the topic of allowing info box borders and title headers. Please submit views on Template talk:Infobox Country and talk:Wales. If the wider Wales community decides not to support a border and title header color in the colors of Wales then I will withdrawal from this position. Rhondda Cynon Taff / Taf

Please check the discussion pages on the Rhondda Cynon Taff page. It took much discussion before it was decided that the correct article is Rhondda Cynon Taff, the name that was official used on the articles of creation when the authority was created. The fact that Rhondda Cynon Taff is the actually page and Rhondda Cynon Taf is a redirect means that all pages should be corrected to point to Rhondda Cynon Taff, if the article demands to be pointed at Rhondda Cynon Taf for any other reason, it should be corrected to Rhondda Cynon Taf. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

The previous article lacked sufficient third party references. The present one does not. If you take the trouble of looking up entries for other bloggers, particularly English ones, you'll find that there is no problem at all regarding the acceptance of bloggers as being notable. It seems to me that the only problem here is one of Welsh wiki users' attitudes towards Welsh bloggers, or perhaps notability of Welsh persons in general. If Iain Dale, Alex Hilton and Conservative Home are seen as being notable, then we should not be afraid of aknowledging homegrown notability in the blogging sphere either. the current article has I believe enough references to establish Rhyferys's notability in the Welsh and UK blogging arena, including appearances on television and in print. Ail Symudiad

Hi Rhyswynne, tangentially to my question about Euros Childs, I noticed you're interested in Welsh-language music - do you know anything about a band called Ail Symudiad? I chanced upon them while trying to find something by Cate Le Bon and was surprised to find they have no WP article. County Borough of Caerphilly

Prynhawn dda Rhyswynne. I noticed your change on the County Borough of Caerphilly page, and have no problems with it. I had been going through the 22 counties and county boroughs in Wales trying to get a common approach to the titling of the infoboxes. Some were previously down as Caerphilly principal area, some as Caerphilly (county borough), some just as Caerphilly, some had the Welsh in bold type, some had it in bold itallics, some had it in normal itallics, some didn't have it at all. If you feel bold itallics is better, do you want to change the other 21 authorities, and maybe check I've got the Welsh right as well (I get very confused over declension when it comes to counties and can never really understand why it's Sir Gaerfyrddin but Sir Ceredigion) Skinsmoke (talk) 12:14, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

[1] was and is a genuine question - have any other states taken such pains to revive a near dead minority language at great expense when nearly all the population (including immigrants) understand the current majority language? Ukranian? Latvian? Lithuanian? Estonian? I think all (maybe not Lithuanian) had become minority languages by the time of independence from the Soviet Union. There are numerous examples within the republics in the Russian Federation too. Then there are Bosnian and Montenegrin, which weren't even recognised as languages prior to independence. Not to mention Catalan, Basque, Valencian, Galician and the island languages in the Balearics in Spain. Faeroese and Greenlandic? And of course the most famous of all, Hebrew in Israel. Thanks for the heads up, that this looks to be a predominantly welsh language wicipedia rather than wikipedia meetup, I might have been able to contribute usefully to an english language wikimeet on articles about wales, but I think it's probably outside my abilities now. I will mention that the museum in town article could do with some content, so if you get the welsh article up to a high level then perhaps we can use that as a basis for the english one. Sorry, I was planning on making it to the urban tap house but life (well my girlfriend and her horse really) meant I didn't get free until far too late. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing.
