Wrong to translate the name?

edit

The Riverfront Arts Centre (often just referred to as The Riverfront or in Welsh: Glan yr afon) is the principal ...

I've heard it called the Riverfront, but don't know anyone (outside of a school/college) that talks Welsh in Newport. Out of several thousand customers I've served I think 8 have spoken Welsh language (and all those with English interspersed or alongside); I did have a couple of Czech and a French customer today though. I'm pretty sure Welsh language speakers from Newport would call it the "Riverfront", I don't think it's right to translate the name of a building. We don't call L'Arc-de-Triomphe the "The Triumph Arch". That makes this opening line wrong or at least unsupported by any evidence. I await correction. Pbhj (talk) 02:12, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sir, your ignorance and prejudice in these matters is becoming proverbial. You might perhaps have thought of checking the Riverside's own website, for a start. This is now restored and referenced. Enaidmawr (talk) 00:08, 25 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
"I await correction.", Clearly those Welsh translators working for NCC would call it the "Triumph Arch" and you have corrected with evidence as requested. Thank you. I'm curious, what do you call New York when speaking Welsh? If you were speaking in English about Cardiff would you call it Fort-on-the-Taff? I find this policy of translating names quite bizarre given that words (non-Proper Nouns) are assumed in to the language without alteration by all speakers I've heard (probably only a few dozen). The Ship

edit

[...] it has been wrongly suggested that the basement space will be too small to view the ship in its entirety.

I was told by one of the senior workers who was at the time involved in the "scanning" and preservation process that the ship would not fit and that the proposed deadline for installing it in The Riverfront was wildly optimistic and likely to miss by several years. I do not have a source for this (that I can cite) but I very much doubt the verity of the above statement and have added a FACT tag. The [parts of the] ship can occassionally be viewed in a local warehouse. Pbhj (talk) 02:12, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
