Help Request

Hi, Thanks for comming to help :)

I was woundering if there was a template warning that you can put on a users talk after they have edited an article to add a raceist comment? Click here to see the comment Tiddly Tom 21:04, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tiddly Tom! As far as templates go, you can find a list of them at WP:TT. In response to a racist comment, one possibility would be the defamatory series, such as uw-defamatory1. Otherwise, you might want to write a little personal note about how we value civility here at Wikipedia, and an unconstructive racist comment does not add to the value of the project. Sometimes using a personal note might have more of an impact than a template. I hope this is helpful to you, and if you have any further comments feel free to drop by my talk page!--Xnuala (talk)(Review) 21:32, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Three Revert Rule Reminder

You have made several reverts to St. Faiths School. Just giving you a heads up about the Three Revert Rule. Tiddly Tom 18:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Point taken... it's not obvious vandalism so 3RR still applies. It is being vandalized, though. But I shall stop till tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. Gscshoyru 18:28, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I woundant call speculation vandalism... Tiddly Tom 18:33, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok, also true. I tend to get annoyed when they don't listen to reason, though... and probably shouldn't... This: [1] on the other hand is vandalism. Gscshoyru 18:36, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I happen to know the editor in real life and have spoken to him, as he is quite new to editing. I have explained that what he did is not allowed on wikipedia, and hopefully he will be editing it again tomorow without 'speculation' being mentioned, only fact. By the way, is St. Faiths on your watch list, or you just caught sight of it on recent changed? Tiddly Tom 18:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
It's on my watch list only because I saw it recent changes a while ago, and reverted stuff, and Twinkle adds everything I revert to my watchlist. And thanks for explaining it to the user. Gscshoyru 18:44, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I was just board on Wikipedia, and was thinking of trying to fight some vandalism! Do you just look at the recent changes, or do you do something else? Thanks, Tiddly Tom 20:28, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I watch recent changes. I also use twinkle, which makes reverting stuff so much easier. Good luck! Gscshoyru 20:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your suggestion, I have used it once and I like it :) Is there anyway I can get to warn users and stuff? (If I am becomming annoying, feel free to tell me to go away :p) Tiddly Tom 21:03, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

(unindent) I forgot about that... take a look at the top of the page... see that thing that says "warn?" Click it. Twinkle is awesome. ARV is for those who pass the fourth level warning, that reports them to the admins. Gscshoyru 21:14, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks again for all your help, but there is no way to automatical put a message on their talk page saying what you have done? Thanks! Tiddly Tom 21:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Um... there is. Twinkle... well, it gives them the warning, at least... the fact that you reverted it is implied, I guess. What exactly are you looking for? Gimme an example. Gscshoyru 21:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
At the moment I am looking throw new pages. I am tagging some for speedy deletion. I was woundering wether it would notify the user of what I have done to their article. Thanks! Tiddly Tom 21:29, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
CSD tab tags the page, and depending on the tag, opens the user's talk in a new window where you can warn them about creating inappropriate pages. Gscshoyru 21:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for recomending Twinkle! I love it :) I just proded a page, and it automaticly informed the user. I woundered if I could set it to do this for speedy deletes? Thanks! Tiddly Tom 18:30, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
proded? And define automatically? It doesn't usually give totally automatic warnings, because it's up to the human to determine the level of warn. And the csd tags (the appropriate ones) open the user-page so you can warn them. What specifically do you need? Gscshoyru 18:33, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Proposed deleted. Deffinaly automatic. It just informed them, not an offical 'warning'. I woundered IF I could set it to automatily inform the user that I had nomonated their articl for speedy deletion, and explain what to do. Thanks! Tiddly Tom 18:37, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah, ok. That's what the menu item for "creating inappropriate pages" is for in the warn box... the lower-level warns include that info, I believe. Otherwise... I have no clue, take it up on the talk page for twinkle and see what the developer says. Gscshoyru 18:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Laura Kuenssberg - Woops!

Welcome to Wikipedia. An article you recently created, Laura Kuenssberg, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines for new articles, so it will shortly be removed (if it hasn't been already). Please use the sandbox for any tests you may want to do and please read our introduction page to learn more about contributing. Thank you. In my opiton, this person is not noteable enough, Tiddly Tom 21:35, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Woops - according to an Admin, you got that one wrong! I know as a new pages patroller myself of some 14months standing (a second thing you didn't check) its difficult to assess articles sometimes, but there was a reference. Less haste, more speed! Best Regards, - Trident13 21:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
    • Yah, But just becouse there is a reference, does this meen that the person is noteable? I did get a little worried when I came here to issue this warning ^^ And you had a very big user talk, and a barnstar just above my post :p Sorry for any inconvenence cause ;) Tiddly Tom 21:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
      • No, but you need to read and know what the criteria are for notability BEFORE you put up a speedy tag! Not doing so will get you into lots of trouble, and hassle - some people are very "protective" of something they wrote, and can take it VERY personally: that's not much fun. A couple of references and a journalist for a nationaly recognised news network would pass WP:BIO, let alone an award form a recognised national society. You were out on at least four issues (me and the time I have been here, journalist, references, award). As I said before - less haste, more speed! If you need any help, come back and ask - happy to help! Best Regards, --Trident13 22:03, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Re:Twinkle

I see you have marked some articles for speedy deletion! Can I recommend Twinkle as it is a very useful tool! I started using it yesterday, and like it very much :) Any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page. Tiddly Tom 17:50, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm pretty much a quality manager on Wikipedia. =D Can you use Twinkle™ to delete obvious vandalism pages if no one else has edited it? Thanx,SpartytimeTalkMy Wikia 17:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Unless you are an admin, you cannot delete the page, but you can very quickly mark it for speedy deletion, it opens the users talk page, and allows you to very quickly tell them what you have done (using the templates). Try it out! It's Great! Tiddly Tom 17:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Isn't that what I've been doing without Twinkle? I imported it a couple days ago, haven't really been able to use it, though.SpartytimeTalkMy Wikia 18:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

This is my point :) With Twinkle, all this can be done much quicker. Try it out :) Tiddly Tom 18:08, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Target Express

The removal tag you placed on the article I created Target Express is irrelevant as the company is no longer trading, therefore why would I be advertising a company that does not even exist anymore!

--Almacel 22:02, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I still feel the article is relavant to the page regarding Initial City Link.

Thanks

Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hi Tiddly Tom! Welcome to Wikipedia! I've been editing it for over three years now, and have contributed thousands of articles. One of the magical things about Wikipedia is that if you know very little about a subject, you can create a stub article about that subject and other people will come along and fill in the information for you! I've done this numerous times, and some truly noteworthy articles have sprung up as a result. My most recent stub is Nina Andersson, and I suggest that you watch and see how it grows in the next few weeks as other users contribute to it, rather than presuming that it's not noteworthy and marking it for speedy deletion! Happy Wiki-ing! Luvcraft 22:10, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

July 2007

Hi Tiddly Tom! Welcome to Wikipedia! I've been editing it since 2005 and have contributed on a regular basis. the Anjelah Johnson wasn't even finished yet. As you should know, creating a new page takes time. You have to insert references and double check spelling and so forth. Given that editing is a long process, if a user believes a new page is not right, out of common courtesy, they raise their concerns on the discussion page of the article and they discuss the matter before they start nominating pages for deletion. It's just polite to do that than presuming that it's not noteworthy and marking it for speedy deletion! Stay cool! (Deej30 22:28, 31 July 2007 (UTC))

What do you mean? Mykonos Mike 21:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

OK, maybe you could have given me a couple of minutes or looked it up yoruself. I have added a link to the talk page now. How can it possibly be an attack page on a serial killer, on the individual charged, possibly, but the reference shoudl sort that out. Mykonos Mike 22:05, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot

Please reply on my talk page if possible, thanks At the moment, I use twinkle, and it is great! I was woundering weather I could use your bot as well for when I nononate an article for speedy delete, it automaticly informs the user I have done so? Thank You! Tiddly Tom 17:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

My bot should automatically notify users. It will although take a minimum of 5 minutes for it to issue a notification. --Android Mouse 18:41, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I started this page in very good faith. Please explain further what was wrong with it. Oh, and please don't patronize me. I have much more seniority on the WIKI than you and I've NEVER "experimented" as you like to call it. Space Cadet 19:02, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Userboxes

Hi, I have sceen on some user pages (I cant remember which) a box that explains how many incodents of vandilism they have revered, how many articles they have created ect. I woudered if you knew how I could put this on my user page, and if it updates its self. It is not just a user box, it is a table of its own. I know I havent been overly clear, but it is hard to explan. Thank You! Tiddly Tom 21:47, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

You can simply use a standard userbox template - . For example, would produce the following userbox.
4This user has started 4 articles
Hope this helps. --Cherry blossom tree 21:57, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for you message. This is one possibilty that I could use, but I was looking for an automated method (I cant rember how many times I have reverted vandlism or speedy deleted pages). Thanks for your help though! Tiddly Tom 22:04, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm fairly sure that there is no automated method - the database doesn't keep track of how many times you have reverted vandalism etc. You could try asking one of the users who has such a userbox, but I imagine they do it manually. --Cherry blossom tree 22:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Speedy

Speedy for A7, non notable, is restricted to people for whom no good-faith claim of notability is made. Saying someone has won a prize, or is a public official, or a professor, or has published a book, or anything else which is more than pure bull-shit is a claim of importance, and speedy cannot be used. If you think that such a person is not notable despite the claim, the method of deletion to use is WP:PROD or WP:AFD. Speedy is an important tool for us in geting rid of trash. do not overuse it.

Anyway, almost always presidents of major companies, professors at major universities, authors with more than one book published by important publishers, etc. are found notable at AfD. DGG (talk) 22:28, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Also, tagging anything but the most obvious trash for deletion only one minute after its creation is pretty uncivil and is often newbie-biting. Better to put it on your watchlist for a day or so and see if it gets better. —Angr 06:00, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: Cambridge

Thanks for the message of support. The reason I didn't revert again is because the original comment was posted by an admin, and I don't feel like getting into an edit war. I've left a message on that user's talkpage in case their account has been used by an unauthorised person. Please feel free to remove the comment completely if you wish - I certainly think it's absurd enough to merit being deleted without warning, as per WP:CITE#Unsourced material! --Malfidus ~ (talk) 17:52, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

helpme I have been trying to do something, but coudant get it to work, maybe someone else could help? I wondered whether I could have a few boxes like the ones at the top of peoples talk pages that encorages users to leave them a new message, but for this page. When clicked it would allow users to make a new request, in the correct manner. This would not only be very helpful here, but on other pages aswell. Thanks  Tiddly Tom  12:21, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

I think talk page might be what you're looking for? If not, let me know on my talk page and I'll see if I can find a better template, or design a new one for you. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:54, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, how does that look? It's not a "template", but that should make it a little easier to make any needed changes. Note, however, that if anyone adds or removes any headers from that page, it'll break the links and someone will have to fix them. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:23, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

StatusBot

If you're looking for help on statusbot, probably easier to ask the maintainer/owner (me). So you know, it says "Invalid Status" for up to 5 minutes until it runs through and creates the statuspage for you. I am hoping to reduce this timeframe soon, but for now it can take a little while. Re: A little help when your free....

Ok. Any code that would "automatically" do this (e.g., load the data and save it for you like popups or TW does) would have to be a javascript code which I can't write and people would have to install for it to work anyway. On the other hand, I can write a link similar to the ones I did previously that opens a "Requested Assessments" section on the page for editing. People would then have to manually enter the information and save it themselves. It'd be the same deal with the category, only that would be a tad more difficult to manage simply because it's a talk page and subject to being screwed around with constantly. I could add a "review" parameter to the talk page header, where if it's set to 1 or something add the page to that category and adds a note in the template. Let me know if this is what you were looking for - it won't take me that long to implement any of it, I just need to know what to do. Hersfold (t/a/c) 16:29, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Looking good! Once you get the cat set up, it should be ready to use. :-) Unfortunately, there is no way to get a "new requests" bar as you're looking for - I'd love to have one myself for a few pages, but I just don't think they exist.
The code in the helpme template allows someone to add their question within the template using either parameter 1 or helptext. So, I need help and would both produce the same thing. If that's not added, the template just says "Ask your question below" like it usually does. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:55, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
I like the header! :-D Always good to see your work get pirated. The problem with the UBX link was that you put the color code outside the link - when the page goes to format something, it'll go for the most recent modifier, in this case the CSS code that says links should be blue or purple depending if you've clicked on them. In order to override that, you have to make the <font> code more recent, but sticking it inside the link like so: <font color="red">link text</font>
For the message box, I'd ask at the tech village pump - they'd have a better idea than I would. It sounds like you're on the right track, but I don't know what code would do it either. Good luck with that. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:55, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hi Tiddly Tom, Thanx again for your helping hands yesterday.

I have learned a lot the last 3 days, and I'm very impressed about Wikipedia and all the possibilities.
Ofcourse I used this site many years already, but now I'm working on it myself, I have a lot of respect for all the people that spend their time for it.

I still have 2 questions:

  1. I try to get my site 'Nhật Sơn, singer' in the list 'Category:Vietnamese singers'.But when I try that, Wikipedia says that category doesn't exists. But it does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Vietnamese_singers
  2. On top of my site is still the message:'This article does not cite any references or sources.'Now I've put a whole list of Sources and references on bottom of the page. How long will it take, before that message disappears?

No need to hurry. Have a nice Sunday first. I can wait until tomorrow ;-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Winfriedpovel (talkcontribs) 17:39, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey. To add a Catoegry type so, for your page I have put in . As for that tag, that does not automaticly go away! Hey, this is not a 9 - 5 job, is it? Did you have dinner already? :-))I did the same like you did, putting that same tag in the page, but after that, when I tried it out, Wikipedia said there is no such category....... Anyway that works, such a relief. I've been busy with it for hours today :-)) Well an English site about this subject doesn't exists. We live in Vietnam :-))

Hey there,

Blackadder's member list is alphabetical I believe - I used to be Addyboy which is why I'm high on it, I've done next to nothing with it. OFAH I started, and would be fine with merging with BBC. The update issue is already acknowledged by the developers. For the errors issue, you can try two things, mainly:
  • Disable scripting, by putting the code in your monobook.js as for firefox only (however I don't recall how to do that, try to search around) or by disabling scripting for IE totally.
  • Using CloseScriptErr.exe by AmiDaniel, which automatically closed the error popups immediately.

Layout stuff

Okay I fixed the horizontal scrolling issues caused by people placing indents before text. But also the layout issues on the /talk sub page, (like the box spacing, the text overlapping, etc.) I can fix those adding parameters, etc., but keep the look exactly the same. Would you like me to go ahead and do the fixes, or to create a subpage in my userspace with how it will look and have you see that prior to putting changes in? ArielGold 21:34, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

P.S. No, the table of contents background color can't be changed. The default archive box color can't be changed either, but I can make you a custom archive box if you want that would match. Also I'd suggest not having each part be separate elements, but just have the entire header be one element(subpage) and the navbar be another. Just a suggestion, of course. ArielGold 21:59, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
P.P.S., MiszaBot III does the user talk pages, so I'll change that as well. ArielGold 21:56, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Okay Tom, take a look at this. That is keeping the same layout design you have, but fixing a few problems. However, that layout has issues because when you keep the TOC in a table, the width of the cell it occupies will vary depending on the width of the header titles. The result of this is that the items in the center cell will end up not being centered most of the time, especially the "Leave me a message" box. What I'd personally suggest, is moving the TOC out of that box, and placing it elsewhere on the page, similar to where I have mine, you can align it to the right, to get it out of the way more. Let me know what you think, ArielGold 22:59, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Also, I saw your note on your user page (even though it redirects here, lol) and I went and played with /Malcolm Pointon a bit, correcting some errors and placing refs into footnotes. Hope you don't mind! ArielGold 23:28, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Test

Testing new layout ArielGold 21:57, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Alright, Version 1.0 is up! Custom TOC, aligned left so not obtrusive, your archive box is located at User:Tiddly Tom/talkheader2, and will need to be updated manually as you add more archives (MiszaBot doesn't update archive boxes), but there are hidden comments that I'm sure you can figure out. Layout is cleaner, but still "you", with all your colors. As for color blind people, I can pretty much assure you that they will see the page no differently, as shades of grey are standard regardless of color blindness. Now, if it were pink, someone who was R/G deficient would see the pink as grey, so either way, I think you're fine and don't need an alt version. Let me know what you think, like/dislike, etc. ArielGold 22:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Without moving the "Welcome" line to another area, it can't be center aligned, because that section is in a two column table, the right column is the archive box. I can move the welcome up though so it is centered, let me do that and see if you like it. ArielGold 06:06, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
V 1.1.2 - What do you think? ArielGold 06:09, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Version 1.1.3

Okay, you wanted the archive box to have round borders, but it looked really bad, when the others aren't round. Personally, I think that in some layouts, the round borders are nice, but not for this one. This layout is simple, muted colors, masculine, clean, and rounded corners sort of detract from that "clean"-ness, the crisp corners are nicer I think, but it is your page, so it is up to you. If you want all round, that's fine I can do that. I like this layout, personally. ArielGold 07:12, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Winning friends and influencing people . . .

Yah, I saw that. This [2] was interesting as well. Credit for originality, at least it's not the standard crap.  ;) Cheers and thanks for the heads up. P.S. Like the user page! Into The Fray T/C 19:42, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle

Hi there, thanks for your message!

I also use Lupin's Anti Vandal tool. It is pretty good for me but I haven't tried any others.

I don't think Twinkle would be the best solution for me because I normally use IE and Zonealarm unless I am on my Linux box. Is it worth using? Doyley 19:13, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I reverted this edit, because the edit appeared to be a good faith edit. I am not sure if the previous edit was correct, but it should not have been reverted without comment. Please see also WP:NEWBIES. Viewfinder 10:53, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Just read through it again, and you are correct! I misread it to say 'Queer' (I am dislexic) thanks for reverting it, and telling me about it, I will try and read more carefully in future. Tiddly-Tom 16:53, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Shane Woewodin edit

Hi Tiddly Tim, thanks for your message about the Shane Woewodin edit, I'm not really sure what happened because I was trying to revert revision 164244967 by 58.168.239.70 which was clearly vandalism and somehow it's ended up looking like I made the original edit. I just clicked the undo button for that revision, any clues on what I've done wrong for next time?

PJohnson 09:49, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Okay

What was happening was that you had the talk page header on a subpage, so when someone clicked the link, their comment went to an empty subpage's talk page, instead of to this talk page. It was being deleted because it was seen as a talk page with no corresponding userpage. I fixed it with a less than ideal solution, if you ever change your name, the header will need to be fixed, but the only other way to fix it was to move it out of a subpage, so... Anyway, I used the "click here to leave a message" link to leave this comment, so we know it works. If you want to see the other page's history, it is here. I tried to figure out why it was going to that page, but maybe I'm just not awake fully yet or something, I couldn't fix it, and decided to just nuke the code and place a raw URL instead. Re: (User talk:ais523/catwatch.js) How to get started

First, you have to install the script on your username. To do this, go to your personal scripts page Special:Mypage/monobook.js, type at the end, and save. (Installing any other script can be done the same way. However, you shouldn't change your monobook.js page unless you intend to install a script, and you shouldn't install a script from a source you don't trust (the scripts on WikiProject User scripts should be fine).) You then have to bypas your browser cache; see Wikipedia:Bypass your cache for instructions on doing this on your browser.

Most scripts are installed at this point, but with the category watchlist script, you then have to specify which categories you want to watch. If you visit your watchlist, you will get a message box asking you whether you want to create a category watchlist; choose 'OK' or 'Yes', and then you will be taken to a page in your userspace where you can specify which categories to watch. Then all you have to do is edit that page according to the instructions there, save it, and bypass your cache again; the script will then be installed.

Let me know if there are any problems. Hope that helps! --ais523 10:06, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

You don't seem to have done anything wrong. What's the problem specifically (for instance, does it add nothing to your watchlist, does it come up with the 'do you want to create a watchlist' message every time you visit your watchlist, or does something else happen)? What browser are you using? Does TWINKLE (the other script you have installed) still work? --ais523 16:04, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
If there are no entries in the category, no entry will come up; the script gives the most recent addition to the category that's still within the category. (Due to the way MediaWiki stores category data, I couldn't do it any other way and still have an efficient script; however, in the case of CAT:HELP, this behaviour is probably what you want (if it isn't, unfortunately I can't change it).) You might want to test by adding a medium-size category that does have members (CAT:ABL nearly always has members, so it's good as a test), to see if that comes up; if it does, the script is almost certainly 'working', it's just that there's nothing in the category to tell you apart. Hope that helps! --ais523 15:29, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

If you want to tell me how saying "doubts remain over the identity of his biological father" constitutes libel, I'll listen- for example, who, precisely, am I libelling? But the fervency with which my rev has been deleted repeatedly is alarming- there is a number of wikipedians demonstrating dogmatism worthy of al-queda.. User:84.221.71.33

Ok I am sorry for what happened but it was not me. 2 boys in my US Studies class were editing bad stuff into this and I was trying to stop them. So I realize you were just doing your job, but I was trying to stop them. I just wanted to let you know, because there was a lot of Ben and Cullen names. I am so sorry for them, they were just being childish boys. -Bsportschick3
