Thank you for your comments on the article. I'll move them to Wikipedia:Peer review/History of Portugal (1777-1834)/archive1 to avoid repetitions. I've corrected the Pedro/Peter, João/John and Miguel/Michael thing as well as the "adhesion of Lisbon". D. is now Dom. As for Caxias, it is a town near Lisbon. I won't revert you again, but I really think that putting the {{NPA}} template on that page can only inflame the situation. I think the sentiment is expressed in the comments by WAvegetarian and myself in a less confrontational manner. Need help re Categories

Hi! You offered me some help with a prob I had but its still not fixed so I thought I'd post this here so you saw it :)

I've created a category called "Miss USA delegates" but I want to add in the main text (see also "Miss USA 2006 delegates" and "Miss USA winners") which are categories in their own right. Is it possible to do this and if so how? CarlyPalmer 21:35, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Not exactly -- the text currently reads "Delegates in the Miss USA pageant prior to 2006." -- I'd like it to read "Miss USA delegates - see also 'Miss USA delegates 2006' and 'Miss USA winners' and have those last two "see alsos" link to the appropriate cateogries. I've added the see also links. To like to a category you should write [[:Category:Miss USA winners]] (note the initial colon.) Category:Miss USA delegates 2006 doesn't seem to exist at the moment - is that just because it hasn't been created yet or because I've put the wrong link in? There is no article on this, but there is an optical technology from 1999 called "Hyper CD-ROM" that, theoretically, can get to 1 PB (1,000,000 GB). Can you cite a source for your recent change? The OED mentiones both Berkely and Berkshire (albeit Berkshire in brackets) - "Abbrev. of Berkeley (or Berkshire) Hunt, rhyming slang for cunt." Hi, the "Berkshire" in brackets in the OED has always seemed strage to me as it's DEF. "Berkeley". I, nor any family member have ever heard of "Berkshire Hunt". Hello, thank you for contacting me, I'm not sure where to go from here? you see about ten years ago or so I was working in the secured Unit of and old Long Term Care Hospital and came amazingly upon two sisters whom suffered from Alzheimer’s. They BOTH however told me on separate occasions the story as related to them by their supposed Gypsy Traveler Mother. Their mother had apparently learned of the myth by way of a man claiming to be of the O'Tool linage, and was still carrying the curse of his ancestors. I apologize for not having any verifiable online information to make the story more credible, but it comes to me from more of a verbal history and is such an amazing one that I just had to include it.Jest R Wicked 19:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back - I've been having trouble getting online. I agree it's a great story, but things in Wikipedia need to be verifiable so that people can check that we're not just making it all up. See Wikipedia:Verifiability for more details. Unfortunately even true things are deleted if there is no reliable source to back them up. I'm really sorry about that - I was trying to remove the additions by 68.32.19.93. Those edits were discussing the wisdom or otherwise of banning books in America (among other things) rather than the Wikipedia article on banned books so I thought they weren't relevant to that talk page. Unfortunately I wasn't careful enough and also removed your comment, which there was nothing wrong with. I've now restored it. Where is My Contribution?

Hello. I created a new article and submitted it on 4/17/06 at 11:00 a.m. PST. (Today is 4/19/06 at 2:30 p.m. PST. A search on the title results in a message saying there are no articles about this topic on Wikipedia. Perhaps it is too soon for the article to appear?

I also tried searching the list of recent deletions, but could not find it there. If it has been deleted it would be helpful to know why so that I can educate myself and submit articles that better fit your requirements. I think you posted your article to Wikipedia:Articles for creation. As yet, no-one has seen fit to actually make the article, for whatever reason. As a registered user, you can create the article yourself, by following this link: Achievo Corporation, and copying the text in there. The text is here if you need a record of it. Please read this message!!

There are several censors/revisionists on Wikipedia who are determined to delete or gut anything they personally do not agree with or like. One of these is an editor named Demiurge whose relentless attempts at censorship, blocked only when he is caught red-handed by third party Wikipedians, continues unabated. Please review his attempts to delete my additions to the Tim Pat Coogan wikipage. Evidently he is not the only one.

Demiurge is an Irish censor and a Catholic apologist who has attempted to delete edits to pages as various as Ante Pavelic, Tim Pat Coogan, pre-Code (related, ironically, to movie censorship in the USA by the Catholic church), Eamon de Valera (refugee policy during WWII), and many others. Is this individual going to be permitted to censor, delete, edit, sanitize, gut, or whatever he cares to do, with no one stopping him??

He has just blocked my sourced and cited additions to the Wikipage of Tim Pat Coogan (pls. check edit history).

I do not have my own computer so I am using a rental, but if you wish to contact me, please email me at karas_peter@yahoo.com (my friend's email address). I would like to receive a valid reason for his abusive attempts at censorship regarding his "pet" issues.

Cherry blossom tree you made a super suggestion to tighten the Bonnie and Clyde article, and to extend the introduction. I eliminated seven sections, combining them without losing facts, extended the intro to three paragraphs which give a good vision of what the article is - so thanks for your help! Could you help me with a template?

Hi Cherry blossom tree!

A few days ago you helped me with Template:RPM Productions states, and I was wondering if you'd be able to lend a hand again. I've tried to re-make this and others to the style of the Miss USA state template and it worked fine for Template:Vanbros states but I'm having trouble with Template:Premier Pageants states and Template:RPM Productions states. What I would like is for the heading to be centered and for there to be better spacing in the bottom section.

What I was wanting was for the spacing between the text links in the bottom section (e.g. "Miss Alabama Teen USA", "Miss Arkansas Teen USA", "Miss Mississippi Teen USA") to be spread out more so there is a clear gap between the columns. I've had a mess with Template:Premier Pageants states and Template:RPM Productions states. I added an extra column between each column that was already there. It's a bit messy but it looks OK to me. Image copyrights

Following up your comment from the Main Page talk page: "As I understand it, taking a photograph or scanning 2-dimensional works of art does not involve any creativity and thus does not generate any new copyright." - are you sure that copyright is limited to creative activities? I know from experience that a lot of time and effort can go into a professional, high quality scan. It is the 'stealing' of the results of that effort that picture libraries are probably trying to minimise by using a "copyright" label. They may even have a justification under some laws. PS. I'm aware of Bridgeman_Art_Library_v._Corel_Corp., but hopefully that won't kill the incentive for museums and such to digitise their collections and put them on display online. Some sort of secure watermarking will probably be used, or maybe is being used. I still think, that as a courtesy to such institutions, there should be a credit line acknowledging the role that a museum of institution has played in making an image available to the public, or in obtaining the image in the first place. I'm fairly confident that the difficulty of a process does not affect the copyright, only the originality of it (our Bridgeman v. Corel article says as much.) A similar verdict was arrived at in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service. You're right that this does not apply worldwide - I think France has stricter copyright laws, for example. Whether this is a good thing or not for getting good quality art displayed online depends on your perspective - the Louvre is becoming more restrictive on taking photographs of their exhibitions which means that if anyone wants a copy they have to go through official channels and (in France, at least) scuppers any chance of getting a freely licenced copy. I can understand where the museums are coming from, but I disagree. --Cherry blossom tree 18:11, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. There is one other area I'm not sure about, and that is restoration of old photographs and touching up of scans of old, dirty and degraded pictures in old books etc. At some point, enough work might go into something for it to be considered resetting the copyright clock. The restoration has improved the end product, though this end product is still sort of a copy of the original. Carcharoth 19:41, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm no lawyer (and that applies to everything else I've said, I suppose) but as I understand it that would probably still not be considered original work, since it is basically attempting to make the photo look the way it used to. You could also argue, however, that restoration was a creative act since it is aiming to make the image look more appealing rather than simply more like the original. thats two seperate exceptions, it does not say that it has to be closely related AND of high standard. If the article is closely related to the site, which in this case it is, then it's an exception to the rule. High quality would be if a site is only related slightly such as a forum for the ski slope, rather rather than Rawtenstall in general.

According to your interpretation of that policy we would be obligated to link to any website on the topic, regardless of the quality of it. This is obviously a ridiculous situation to get into. We provide a small number of external links when they provide information beyond what is available in the article. We do not under any circumstances link to barely used forums. I presume you're referring to http://www.rossendaleonline.co.uk/? While this does include a forum it also includes information beyond that - news, a directory and so on. Firstly, the fact that you think good practice is being violated in one instance never gives you the right to do so in another. Secondly, it is demonstrably false that that site is just a forum - there are also news stories, a business directory and a calendar of events. Having said that, there isn't much content and if I were writing the article from scratch I would not include it but it is enough of an edge case for me to remove it either. It was one of my first articles (I started wikiediting in June 2005 and the Alkonost is of July), inspired by the Viktor Vasnetsov article. That is why I worked slowly. The Encyclopedia Mythica article was one of the sources of the Alkonost. I was trying to retell it rather than copy-paste, but after looking back it appears that I could do a better job in it. Cherry Blossom Tree - I strongly disagree with your deletion of the paragraph about volunteering from the Kule Loklo page. Kule Loklo is a recreation of a California Indian village that is deteriorating and is desperately in need of volunteers to restore and maintain it. The paragraph you deleted was an attempt to let people know that it not only is a place that tourists can visit, but a place that interested people can maintain.

Without additional volunteers, there soon won't be much of the village left. The subterraneau sweatlodge is already unsafe to enter, and several structures are on the verge of collapse. One already has collapsed. This is not a for profit-venture. It is native and non-native people working together to preserve history and educate the public about the fact that traditional Native American culture was far, far more diverse than standard representation we see in the media. I can't see what the problem is. I don't doubt that the song title is real. I'm just not really sure that there's much point to having a disambiguation page there - the Happy Mondays song was mentioned on in Bob's your uncle anyway. I suppose it could be a hatnote if you'd prefer that but it doesn't really matter. Having two articles under the same title (only a spelling variation) which contain the same content (one in slightly more detail) seems bizarre to me. The situation I left the article in was the same as the one I found it in except 'yer' was spelt 'your' in the title and I had corrected a few facts. Capitalization for Jessica Drake

As you can see at k.d. lang and bell hooks, Wikipedia uses lower-case capitalization for proper nouns in cases where the subject chooses to be known in that way. An editor received an e-mail from a woman claiming to be drake [3]; her official website [4] and her production company's website [5] both list her that way. Wikipedia generally uses whatever name most people would expect to find an article at. Three of the four external links in the article spell her name with capitals (admittedly I have no idea how reliable IAFD or AFDB are, but IMDB is usually pretty good and they spell her with capitals and kd lang in lowercase, for example) and most of the first couple of pages on Google do the same. It does appear to be a single purpose account. I'm not really sure it's worth taking any further action at this stage, though. The disruption is more or less under control. Hopefully the user will either come to work within the relevant policies or get bored and give up fairly soon. The username could possibly also imply that they have some connection with the blog. If the user stays around for a longish period then it might be worth changing but probably a waste of time if he/she leaves soon. On the story itself. I can't help but think that the people who keep deleting it are actually enemies of Kibaki's trying to make sure the issue gets as much publicity as possible with these edit wars--however, speculation is beyond the scope of Wikipedia. Just one more reason it's important to only present what is said, without bias. I will look at your most recent edit when I regain the stomach for it, to see if I agree with you, as I think it was a little better and less biased a few dozen edits ago. Pages on Wikipedia change over time as people add, alter or remove information. If you look at a page today, it may look different when you look at it again in a week's time. If you save the permanent link, rather than the general article title, then it will always look as it does today. In order to use it you can copy the link and save it, and it will always point to the version of the article you see at that time. This is mainly useful when you need someone else to see the same version of the article you see, some time in the future. For example, if you cite a specific fact to a Wikipedia article and link to it then you might want to link to the permanent version of the article so that if someone follows your link then they will always see the version with that fact in it, even if it is removed or altered at a later date. That's not the way we see it, unfortunately. Wikipedia receives 285 thousand page views per minute, so even if your vandalism only lasts for a minute there's a fair chance that someone will see it eventually. If that person already knows a bit about the subject then it will just irritate them but if not then they could be misled or at least confused, which is the opposite of what Wikipedia is trying to do.

The instances in which you humorously identified Seigenthaler as the assassin of Kennedy and a 9/11 hijacker also constitute libel. The person who originally vandalised the article lost his job over the incident and could have been prosecuted. That probably won't happen to you, but for that reason and also simple human decency we put a lot of effort into preventing things like that appearing in Wikipedia.

Finally, your messing around simply wastes the time of other people who have to fix it after you've finished when they could have been doing something more constructive. If you want to contribute to Wikipedia then you're welcome to but it is not your playground and if you continue to treat it as such then I'm afraid you will be blocked. I would love to edit that paragraph until it is neutral. Unfortunately that would require me to insert sources, which I have not (after an admittedly brief search) been able to locate. The deleted paragraph is essay-like in tone. It doesn't sit well in what should be a terse encyclopaedia entry - it's baggy, and devotes a disproportionately large number of words to a single sub-theme. The NPOV violation matters as well.

The article tells you that JB has a lot of strongly held and controversial opinions that don't always seem to sit well with each other. It warns the reader that she doesn't like Islam, and includes an example of a time she was simply, objectively wrong (as opposed to in violation of the I-don't-like-what-she-wrote Act). Think About This

So, this is all really an experiment in the tendencies of human nature. By allowing Wikipedia to be edited by anyone, you are allowing vandals, morons, and jokers to publish their warped opinions on every subject imaginable, but also letting the decent intellects who want to make the internet not stupid edit. I'm a cynic and a skeptic. But the question is, will people realize the basic rightness of human decency, or be idiots and use this as their literary playground?

Red rain in Kerala

Userboxes

Hi, I have sceen on some user pages (I cant remember which) a box that explains how many incodents of vandilism they have revered, how many articles they have created ect. I woudered if you knew how I could put this on my user page, and if it updates its self. It is not just a user box, it is a table of its own. You can simply use a standard userbox template - {{Userbox |side-box colour |main box colour |side-box content |main box content}}. For example, {{Userbox|blue|red|4|This user has started 4 articles}} would produce the following userbox.

4This user has started 4 articles

I'm fairly sure that there is no automated method - the database doesn't keep track of how many times you have reverted vandalism etc. You could try asking one of the users who has such a userbox, but I imagine they do it manually. --Cherry blossom tree 22:17, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
