2023
happy new year |
---|
The colours of my January calendar image are Ukrainian for a reason. - I wish you luck with DYK, - feeling much lighter without it for the moment. I have a question open at WT:DYK#see you later, though, looking at recent operas singers and their DYK show. I think that the phrase "have underperformed as of late" that I keep reading (not by you) is not supported by the latest, on top of that this staring at views is my key reason to have gone on strike. I had 184 articles on DYK last year, which also means 184 reviews, and most of them appeared without any problems. - I'm reducing your workload now, with a focus on RD, GA and FA. RD views: Galina Pisarenko c. 13k, Pope Benedict XVI 1.6+ mio. I tried to say a bit more about Pisarenko than just giving her name as on RD, - will we do that? Probably not. But at least it looks like she will not be rejected for not finding something juicy to say about her ;) - One more idea: DYK credits still say "and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed", - could that perhaps be clarified to that we all thank you for writing the stats automatically? "may be added" is too vague. - Also "Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page." sounds so inviting, and then you do and get told that it's not interesting ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:40, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
today, I point at two singers I whose performance I enjoyed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:44, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the well wishes, Gerda :) best of luck to you as well, in your other endeavors. I'd be happy to update {{UpdatedDYK}} and {{UpdatedDYKNom}} as soon as GalliumBot passes its trial period. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 23:56, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- Your edit summary on the second message says "pointy", is that a reference to WP:POINTY? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 23:57, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- the German word - aufzeigen - has more than one meaning: "show, point at, demonstrate", - today, less pointy: a composition from a remarkable 2022 concert, the sad record of four articles about people who recently died on the Main page at the same time, and singing for Epiphany (which ends the Christmas season), with the star singers (some pictured) - As views are of so much importance for DYK: the views for Pope Benedict XVI were impressive, naturally (but I contributed only little, the other three are Rosi Mittermaier (a celebrity at least in German, [1]), Kurt Horres [2], and Andrew Downes, the last one entered only today. Keep watching in case of interest. You can check out the reviews on WP:ITNN: efficient. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:04, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
- adding the stats for Downes --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:30, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
- Today's featured article is Osbert Parsley, not by me but Amitchell125 where I commented, including the beginning of my songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:07, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Well, I'm glad you're finding success elsewhere. I imagine views are less important for ITN as they are for DYK, because they have different missions; ITN seeks to inform users about what is currently relevant and what they should know, while DYK seeks to "hook" users in to reading new content with a catchy blurb that makes users want to know more. ITN is aggregate journalism, DYK is narrative storytelling; different people have different talents. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 23:56, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- At the airport, no time for philosophy (perhaps later on vacation): would you be interested in a woman because she learned Norwegian? Not me. I debate with myself if I will list hook #19 here, probably not. My goal was to say a bit more about that unique woman, not something she shares with thousands. - a complete failure on my part. Moving on. -Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:36, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yesterday Guido Dessauer was on OTD. When this friend of mine died 10 years ago, I wrote his article, and summarized in a hook as much as I could about what he achieved. I run my own stories now, and that is top right now. With the current DYK environment, I'm afraid I'd have to say what he did when young instead, and I am glad that - at least for most of the years since I wrote DYK - I was to free to say something to the core of the person. Enough philosophy for another vacation day ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:53, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Today's topic Elisabeth Waterhouse, top of my top list. - Manistina: in the hook now in prep you could exchange her name for any other singer in the situation of stepping in last minute without enough time to learn the staging (undefined when
wherewhat), - some explanation of why that would be a good hook about her would be welcome, because I just can't believe it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:56, 21 January 2023 (UTC)- @Gerda Arendt: Good, then – our base of theatre performers will find a hook they can relate to, and our unacquainted readers will learn something new and fun. Sounds a lot more exciting than publishing the fact that she, err, sang in three different countries. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 07:22, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- countries? - what was suggested to say was that she performed in Tchaikovsky's favourite opera which is too little known, as all reviews say, some in the headline. instead, we want to specify the position of her substitute?? I can't believe that we want to miss a chance like that. - What I liked about DYK was the know aspect, and I miss it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:46, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Ah, my bad, I forgot that you proposed hooks. I was going off of what you told Storye book at her talk.
- So, I suppose, for those playing along at home, this is Gerda's must-run hook:
- ... that mezzo-soprano Elena Manistina was flown in from Moscow to perform in Tchaikovsky's The Enchantress?
- Nifty, I suppose. Impressive. But here's my question, because I'm reading this hook, and – keeping in mind that I'm a classically trained vocalist and violinist, a proficient pianist and guitarist, and a general lover of music – I have no idea what in this hook could compel me to want to know more about Manistina. DYK wants me to know that she performed The Enchantress? Awesome – now I know, and then I'm going about my day as usual, instead of actually taking the time to care about a great woman that Gerda worked hard to write about. I haven't been given a reason to want to know more.
- And that's the real kicker – it's not about whether people wanna read about opera, it's not about pageviews, it's not about whether a hook might contain too much information. I can live with all of that, most of the time. It's about the fact that this style of hook writing is fundamentally poor. And that's because it equates simply being neat or situationally impressive with actually being intriguing. If we're just giving people neat facts to live with, perhaps we should rename our unit of information, because Google says that "hook" means "a thing designed to catch people's attention."
- Between this comment and an essay on hook interestingness I'll shamelessly self-plug, I have nothing more to say on this talk page about Gerda's hooks. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 08:11, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- we say the same - it's about hooks and no longer about know, and I won't participate. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:16, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Help updating Adam Pritzker's article
Hi leeky. I noticed you are an active and accomplished Wiki contributor. With your interest in U.S. politics and Judaism, I am hoping you'll be willing to help me update Adam Pritzker's article. I've posted an edit request that is still pending, titled Update roles, as my COI keeps me from making these changes directly. Thank you in advance for making these changes and helping me out. DCBPI (talk) 15:12, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, DCBPI! I've been eyeing this for a day or so now, but I don't think I have the bandwidth to hop in right now. COI editing can take a lot of time, so I would recommend patience :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 22:09, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

- Seconded. You and the rest of the highly-dedicated people who keep DYK from exploding go through a lot of shit. You have every right to use "bad words". This isn't a preschool. Nobody is directing bad words at other editors. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 19:13, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
theleekycauldron, can you please return to your review here and check the proposed shorter hook? It would be great to get this nomination finished, if the hook works and is properly sourced and in the article. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:05, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Melissa Ong
On 10 February 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Melissa Ong, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that "Step Chickens" on TikTok replace their profile pictures with an image (shown) of Melissa Ong, whom they call "Mother Hen"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Melissa Ong. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Melissa Ong), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello Theleekycauldron, BorgQueen has given you a shining smiling star! You see, these things promote WikiLove and hopefully this has made your day better. - While I've got your eye, I want to introduce you to my new wikifriend (and soon to be yours), User:Elttaruuu. They've been here just a month and this what they gave us all for Valentine's Day. BusterD (talk) 22:23, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- @BusterD: I definitely understand – ultimately, consensuses are gonna get to draw lots of lines that stay longer than they should, in places they shouldn't. What I find myself more uncomfortable with is that we talk about this in the abstract. This seems less like a "this is a thing for which enwiki needs to try and address the general case because it's a huge problem" and more like a "we haven't had any culture war debates onwiki in a while". Why even try to draw this line now? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 22:44, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- I'd rather not say too much now. This is an uncharacteristic wikichapter which will have to work itself out. Twists and turns ahead. Not up to me. BusterD (talk) 22:48, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Asking for DYK-related advice
Hello! Once again, thank you for reaching out and for that guide about DYK.
I do have one review I'd like to show you, as I had a major doubt about the hook's statement. Could my proposal be a good compromise? Also, that work is not finished, yet, as I'm waiting for a response from the nominator.
Oltrepier (talk) 10:37, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Looks good, Oltrepier! Could be a bit punchier, but no sweat :) my bigger concern would be whether the claim has MEDRS-level sourcing behind it – I'm not very trustworthy of newspaper re-reporting on scientific discoveries. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 01:41, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- To be honest, the article looks alright, since they also interviewed directly the two scientists involved, and it's pretty focused and accurate.
- The main problem is that, as I noticed in my review, the user might have misunderstood the original claim... Oltrepier (talk) 11:03, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
Question...
Hi Leeky. This isn't directly relevant to DYK but I really don't have anyone else to ask. I used to be an active member of WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles many years ago. After a long hiatus, I came back to find the editor who had been compiling Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/de had left Wikipedia. It is a list of German wikipedia articles with at least 3 interwiki links, but no link to the English wikipedia (hence identifying which important articles the English wiki lacks). Do you know how to compile the list? I've heard that they had used the toolserver database, now replaced by the Toolforge database. BorgQueen (talk) 15:36, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, BorgQueen! If you're familiar with SQL, https://quarry.wmcloud.org/ is a great way to query the existing databases. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 01:43, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Very interesting. No, I'm not really familiar with SQL but I guess I'll have to study it now. Quarry looks fun! BorgQueen (talk) 02:10, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
DYK page views bug?
I saw that the Erdogan Gollum trials has zero views, yet according to my count it has about 18'000. There was a page move at mid day. Under the old name it had 7000+ and the new one 11000+. Just a question. If you are tired of it, leave it. What you did for DYK was and is extraordinary.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:20, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- And on the chess table... maybe there is a bug as well? I don't believe you play much. How about the knight to F3 in a new move? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:24, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, @Paradise Chronicle! The lazy answer to this question is that DYK articles are supposed to be move-protected while on the Main Page, but we haven't quite gotten around to implementing that yet. As for how page moves are implemented in vandyke... it is not. urgh. I probably gotta do that. Known bug, but I haven't fixed it yet. My apologies! As for the chess match, i've been kind of pooped out of the game for a while, but I might make a move later tonight :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 02:37, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
Asking for DYK-related advice (part 2)
Hello again!
If you have time, I just wanted to ask you if you can take a look at another review of mine, please... It should actually be alright, but I avoided giving the green tick, because I had proposed a new hook myself.
Oltrepier (talk) 11:17, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- By the way, that nomination was made by another "black belt" of DYKs, so they helped me a lot in the process, too! Oltrepier (talk) 11:19, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, Oltrepier! I've left my thoughts at the nompage – couple of hesitations, but I think they're fairly easily dealt with. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 06:27, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
DYK for Capri-Sun
On 26 February 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Capri-Sun, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Capri Sun. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Capri-Sun), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed.
