GOCE May drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Initial program for figuring out drive barnstars completed

Hi. I have an initial version of the program for figuring out GOCE drive barnstars completed. A copy of the program itself is at User:Allens/GOCE/GOCE.barnstars1.pl (in Perl); a copy of its output for the May drive is at User:Allens/GOCE/GOCE.barnstars1.pl.output1 (except that there will be a "*" in front of the "10k articles(s)" line - minor formatting bug...). It doesn't do quite everything (figuring up who did the most articles the first day is not possible just looking at the after-drive info), but it's pretty close. I'm continuing to work on the program - I'd like it to produce:

• Preliminary drafts of the barnstars that could then be modified to be more personalized;
• Info on number of articles reviewed (both how many articles done by a person were reviewed, and how many articles each reviewer checked); and
• Total number of articles and number of words processed.

Either a drive coordinator can run the program if the person happens to have a Mac or other Unix/Linux machine (or can figure out how to do it on a Windoze machine - it's possible, but I have no idea how to do it), or I can run it after the next drive. Wow, Allen, that's really fabulous! I see that the program has even gone to people's article listings and has generated a corrected leaderboard, so I'll be able to return and issue a couple more barnstars that were earned but not spotted when I did it. This is a real asset, not only for saving work, but especially for avoiding human error. A million thanks for this. My pooter is Windows, but if you wouldn't mind running it after the next drive, that would be wonderful.

For preliminary drafts of the barnstars, I have a set of substs that I currently use to generate them (manually) here and this is the template I use to generate the message for most of them, although I doubt that will be any use to you.

Tourism has always been a difficult topic! Some city articles do not have separate tourism section, which I personally prefer. However, tourism being a big thing in this relatively smaller city (it is a major source of economy of the city), I would tend to keep the section.

Another copyeditor from the League of Copyeditors asked why we are not mentioning national parks, parks etc in or near the city (the copyeditor by mistake did not notice the Tourism section). We agree. By the way, I don't object to having a tourism section. It was just a comment on how it's written. But I've had a look at one or two city and country FAs, and those that have a tourism section tend to have the same problem at least to some extent. So I've withdrawn that comment.

About the newspapers: I don't think the Kannada-language papers are any less notable that the English-language ones. But why have a list of papers that are merely available there, but not published there? Every city in the world has national papers available in them. This is the sort of information one might want in a tourist guidebook, but why in an encyclopedia? Remember WP:NOTTRAVEL. --Stfg (talk) 10:19, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Apologies for the delayed reply -- I seem to have overlooked this. After copy editing articles I generally avoid stating overall assessments on their review pages, because if I do it for one and not for another, it might cause resentment in the latter case. I do have the page and the FAR watchlisted, and will be happy to copy edit any insertions that need it and to participate in discussion of details of the prose if they arise. The fact that I placed a {{GOCE}} tag on the talk page implies that I stand by the quality of the prose. You're welcome to add an "Update 7" to the FAR page to mention it, if you wish. This cancels the PROD and an article cannot be PRODded twice, so you don't need to take any further action, but it would be a good idea to watch the situation, as the nominator may wish to take the article to AfD. I started editing but stopped due to the many content and reference issues (I didn't add a "reviewed" tag, because I'm new at this). However, I think I did enough to get some feedback. New drive signup method

I've made some more changes. Go here and see what you think. The only possible problem now is that it uses large headers for each person, but you can see that by changing the Participants to a top top-level header (just one =), it will look right in the table of contents. If we keep that all at the bottom, it should work. We can just move the reviewers list above the participants. Ah yes, that's great. The main user difficulty we needed to solve was that some editors were getting confused about where to put their entries in the Totals section. This solves that. I'm quite happy to move the reviewers above the participants to achieve that. (Would you be OK with making it Totals, by the way?)

Section headers can skip levels and the TOC will still look fine. The current page does that, in fact. Take a look at User:Stfg/Sandbox1, which shows level-2 sections with level-4 and level-5 subsections. So long as all children of a given parent are at the same level, it works. I just realize I neglected to reply to this earlier. The problem is actually the inverse of what you've got in your test page. The button can't make level 4 or 5 headers, as far as I know. You certainly have the abilities needed to get an article to FA, but are you very keen for it to be this one? The difficulty is in the topic, which is rather narrow for making an article that can tell an engaging story. If you could find some sources that support human-interest background stories, and some pictures, it might be feasible, otherwise I'm not sure. Normally, three dots also have a space in front of them (see MOS:ELLIPSES). But neither of the two Featured Articles that have such dots (0.999... and These Are the Voyages...) do this in the title, so it's probably best not to change your title. --Stfg (talk) 09:53, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Help in moving an article

Hi. I recently made an article (a biography) entitled Scott Xavier but the moving from my sandbox to the article site encountered some problems. It says "The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid." Hi Jack, thanks for asking. I agree fully with Dianna. When I encounter a situation like this, I like to look at the editor's userpage, talk page, contribution list and edit count. Here you see an inexperienced user whose talk page already indicates misunderstanding of several Wikipedia policies and irritation when told. Dianna's reading of the reason all those tags have appeared feels right to me. He may learn, or may become frustrated and move on. One thing to avoid would being too direct and risking provoking him to become an edit warrior. A gentle explanation of the issues on his talk page might help (or might not, I dunno). I would slightly take issue with one of your edit summaries: "He is known for... This is a true statement if only ten people know it. So, no citation needed." Copy edit requests

Hi Stfg, I noticed that some WikiProjects have sections with articles that need copy editing. See, for example, WikiProject Libraries. Could these be considered requested articles for the purpose of GOCE drives? I suspect many editors don't know about the Guild or that they can request work from us; I didn't until this May, when I joined the last drive. Of course, if such articles are fair game, we can publicize that on the drive page or elsewhere so it doesn't turn out to be an advantage for the knowledgeable few. Ok, maybe this doesn't really apply. That link won't work anymore, as I've been cleaning the page and learned that listing was based on old copyedit tags. Advertising our requests page on project talk pages is certainly a great idea. We need to make sure that our regular requests don't get swamped by a list generated by just one project, so tagging might in some cases be the most we can afford to offer. But we tend to treat tagged articles a bit more impersonally than requests, and of course tagged articles tend to lie waiting longer than requests. Hi Vaibhav. Thanks for asking. I don't normally take direct requests, but I was thinking of taking this one anyway as I know cricket and understand the jargon there. The only thing is, I found quite a lot of fine detail in the article, like someone being caught off a thick edge, which is the kind of jargon that people who don't know it would need quite a long explanation of, and I'd be tempted to prune that kind of thing. We need to avoid match articles reading like newspaper reports or transcripts of radio commentaries. Would you be OK if I thinnned out some of that kind of detail? Hi there. Would you mind dropping by the above article and explaining to User:Ranger Steve that the following caption "The iceberg thought to have been hit by Titanic, reported to have been streaked, along its waterline on one side, with red paint from a ship's hull (photographed by the chief steward of the liner Prinz Adelbert on the morning of 15 April 1912)", regardless of how long it is, and how many commas it has, is not a complete sentence, and must therefore not be ended by a period, as per WP:MOS? Glad you like the list approach. I won't take a view as to whether that's misleading or not, because I don't think either editor has native-level English, but I've been over there to see if I could suggest something. I'm not going to take a view on what they should say, but if I can help them say what they mean then it's OK.

I must say that I went there rather reluctantly, because that's one of the articles that has been mentioned in the ArbCom request, and I don't want to muddy the waters. (I don't want disrupt the mediation either.) You are a very good wikipedian and we need people like you, so it would be a crying shame if your work got spoiled by being dragged on to a battleground where you cannot achieve much. There is a lot of process still to happen on that set of issues and affecting those articles. When all that process is done, then neutral people will be able to go there and make the articles good. That may be later rather than sooner, though. It's up to you what you do, of course, but I hope you won't mind me saying as a friend that I think you'd be better leaving anything to do with that drama well alone for now, and concentrating on the many other things you're good at. Thank you, that is very helpful. Using the search box on the UN site, it appears that they are comfortable using both expressions. Jammu and Kashmir seems to occur about 3 times as often as Indian-administered Kashmir, but both are used too often to be accidental. My conclusion is that both terms are valid. The issues with Lola Kenya Screen were addressed in 2011 yet that has not been reflected on its page that still shows the article has multiple issues. Yes, I've been able to remove some of the tags, and I think the article can now be copy edited. The article still needs wikifying, those capital letter need dealing with, there are two unreferenced sections, and several primary sources, so I could not remove all the tags. Hi, Stfg. Some time back (end of May maybe), I requested a copyedit for Grey's Anatomy. Several editors have agreed that the copyedit was unsatisfactory, and I was recommended to place the article back in the queue. Since the article had been in the queue since late May/early June, is there any way the request can be unarchived and placed back in the queue, under the date it was originally requested? Hi TRLIJC19. I'm sorry, but no. You may remember the discussion at User talk:Rumiton#Question on GA Grey's anatomy. Since that discussion, I see no evidence that you've returned to Rumiton's talk page to discuss any issues with his copy edit, and in fact there have been around 360 edits to the article since he completed his work, the vast majority of which were made by you. I've had a look at the article and it's clear that there would be substantial work to do, so it would be not just a corrective pass-through, but a brand new copy edit. You are welcome to have another, but I'm afraid it must take its place in the queue. What I would strongly recommend you to do is to complete all the editing you want first, and then request a new copy edit, since there's no point adjusting how something is said until we know what is to be said. Yes, Wikipedia is tough at first. Actually though, images are easy. Take a look at Help:Contents/Images and media to get the ...ahem.... picture. To upload pictures, use the Upload Wizard that's linked from there.

If you're going to do much on Wikipedia, you may want to look at Help: Wikipedia: The Missing Manual. That's how I eventually got going. But there's a lot there. I'll be happy to help you with the article once the GOCE drive is finished (i.e. a little less than 2 weeks from now). Then I will copy edit the article and I can help with other aspects if you want. Thanks Cliff. That's very much appreciated and actually extremely timely. I've just finished creating the barnstars page, and as it's error-prone, if you'd be able to do some checks on it, that would be brilliant. I don't think it's necessary to check people's individual word counts, because I did this in a spreadsheet and triple-checked all cases where that result differed from the editor's own sum. Likewise, the leaderboard there was constructed from scratch and the only discrepancies with the drive page have been explained. But where I might have slipped up is in assigning the correct barnstars and rollover counts. The mapping from word counts to barnstar types is at the bottom of the main drive page. Everything else comes from the leaderboard.

Simon, I did notice some inconsistencies. Here's what I came up with in total words and articles using your numbers as the final arbiter (below). The various Barnstars (for words and the new rollover words were checked using your "total-words" figures, and they were all correct. For the record, however, when I punched in Lfstevens numbers, my calculator immediately exploded and I lost the distal phalanges on my "hunt-and-peck" fingers :-O

(←) Oh, ouch!, it's a real toughie doing this stuff without distal phalanges! Seriously, Cliff, thanks very much for doing that. I don't think any other checks are needed. Total words on the leaderboard is just the number of words edited, whereas the numbers in the individual totals add the 50% bonus for requests (*R) and oldest articles (*O), hence that discrepancy. I'm not clear what you spotted about the leaderboard awards for total articles. Those numbers are what's there, aren't they?

Dianna, Torchiest, unless there's something still to correct on the last point, we can go ahead and issue the barnstars now. (I'll do mine in the morning -- I'm currently on UTC+1).
