A cup of coffee for you!

Thanks for representing the Wikimedia community in the article in The Hindu. Have you given any other interviews or been featured in any other journalism? If you have, can you share please? Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:37, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
There was another event last year but the reporting had serious errors - ok not ok - (6000 papers! what!) Shyamal (talk) 02:56, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: - apparently there was another piece here - I suppose one of the things that interested them really was the arbcom case associated with IIPM - see this. Shyamal (talk) 15:39, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks I will look this over. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:34, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Newsletter

Thanks Shyamal! Yeah, I figured I'd try to help push the project back onto people's front burner again; we seem to have lost group momentum at the moment. Now I have to figure out how to use the new mass message service; it's a bit more complicated than the old system! :P I like your idea, and I think it would be useful to other projects as well. Perhaps we can request something like this from the programmers? Too bad Snowman isn't still around; this would have been right up his alley! MeegsC (talk) 19:14, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

editing bird pages

I think I got the Grey-breasted Prinia to a decent shape. I am just beginning to understand how to get other material and if I get any on this one, I will keep adding. For now there is little I could find at the usual sources other than listings in various check lists. Let me know your comments when you can.

Next I thought I will work on Velvet-fronted Nuthatch from your pending list, a bird we have enjoyed every time we have sighted it! btw, why is there a smiley icon next to few of the names (ex Sarus Crane) ? Well edited?

Also, what was the number next to the birds? You said it was how many times it was searched... was that per day? and it had something to do with bird spot...right?

thanks. Nanda ramesh (talk) 06:44, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

@Nanda ramesh: - several things to search for - Pittie's bibliography Internet Archive Biodiversity Heritage Library Google Scholar. Yes, that list is a personal target list, the smiley next to Sarus Crane shows that I am happy with it. The list was created by taking all the reports from BirdSpot and then sorting them from the most often reported to the least often reported. The number in brackets was the number of reports from across the country. So it is roughly in order of common to rare. Of course, one has to break that order to improve some of the more enigmatic species (like the Jerdon's courser). Shyamal (talk) 07:10, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Zotero

Hi I installed the Zotero plugin (thanks for the tip!) and now it does shows a drag and drop icon in the top right corner of my Firefox browser. But I am not sure how to do next. Some time ago I added a bunch of reviews in the article Fishes of the World. I can't figure out how to convert those into the citation template format using Zotero. Can you give a demo wiki edit there? I am watching the article. Best. Solomon7968 22:20, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

If you go to any of the journal cites with what are called COinS enabled - you will see a book icon showing on the URL bar. Click on it and the citation gets imported into the Zotero database. You can also click on the book link on the browser toolbar for any website. If you click the Z on the toolbar the Zotero pane should open and you can edit and keep notes on your specific references. When you are done with your research you can select the bibliographic items in the Zotero pane (multi select with control key in Windows). You can then right click and export - choose Wikipedia citation template and you will get a file with all the bibliographic entries filled into citation templates. Let me know if this is not clear and I can put in snapshots on some other site. Commons rules will not allow them. Shyamal (talk) 02:49, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
I have hashed together a quick presentation on Zotero usage - http://www.slideshare.net/muscicapa/firefox-zotero-wikipedia-and-you - I normally do this live in the browser for Wikipedia workshops and so had never considered making this set of instructions, but here you go. Let me know if more explanations are needed and whether you managed to use the trick. It should work on Ubuntu just as given here - I am not sure about how things work on Apple Macs, for one I do not know about the right click. Shyamal (talk) 03:51, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Paradise Flycatcher

Hi Shyamal! Today the page about Asian Paradise Flycatcher was moved to Indian Paradise Flycatcher. Reason given is an article published in The Hindu, an Indian newspaper, i.e. not a scientific source. Can you help to undo this move? Unless of course this issue has been discussed and agreed upon. Cheers, BhagyaMani (talk) 13:40, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Just a change in the treatment used by ebird I believe. Needs to be discussed of course, have not seen the supporting papers but phylogenetic splits like this are quite fashionable now. Shyamal (talk) 14:53, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
Glad you reacted so promptly!! The article in The Hindu is about the Indian subspecies, but the specific common name has not changed. Cheers, BhagyaMani (talk) 18:14, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
BhagyaMani and Shyamal you are partly correct. But as you say, Indian Paradise Flycatcher is not a subspecies of Asian Paradise Flycatcher. I was able to gather more information on this.
birds.cornell.edu and ebird.org (based on Fabre et al. (2012) and Andersen et al. (2015)) both say that Asian Paradise Flycatcher is divided into three different species and one among them is Indian Paradise Flycatcher. Which means, with the new taxonomic update in place, now there no species named Asian Paradise Flycatcher. Hence, we will have to divide the Asian Paradise Flycatcher page into three different new pages like:
  • Amur Paradise-Flycatcher (Terpsiphone incei)
  • Blyth’s Paradise-Flycatcher (Terpsiphone affinis)
  • Indian Paradise-Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi)
And now the taxonomic name "Terpsiphone paradisi" which was referring to Asian Paradise Flycatcher will here after refer to Indian paradise Flycatcher.
We can discuss more if necessary.

Technically every taxonomist has the right to treat taxa as they like. What we have here is an elevation of some subspecies to the rank of species. These happen quite constantly and are usually based on a molecular phylogenetic study - that looks at the distances and uses a sufficiently large and geographically well dispersed set of samples apart from distribution patterns, isolation mechanisms such as call, behaviour etc. The list actually cites the peer-reviewed paper that we need to examine before citing it (not a newspaper) - Andersen, M.J., P.A. Hoster, C.E Filardi, and R.G. Moyle. 2015. Phylogeny of the monarch flycatchers reveals extensive paraphyly and novel relationships within a major Australo-Pacific radiation. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 67: 336–347. It would be best to wait and watch the update on the IOC list - worldbirdnames.org before proceeding with the change. Shyamal (talk) 15:30, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Best to discuss at WT:BIRD Shyamal (talk) 15:38, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Having seen the paper, it seems to be based on a very incomplete sampling - the clade of South Asian T. paradisi is not surprising but it would ideally be best to wait for more work and use the older comprehensive names with trinomials for now. Shyamal (talk) 16:00, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

I agree with Shyamal to first discuss about moving content. The more so, as only changing the name in article title and introduction section causes more confusion than actually clarifying : other sections of this article are based on Asia-wide distribution of T. paradisi. So yes : lets wait for more publications! BhagyaMani (talk) 16:14, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

BhagyaMani and Shyamal completely agreed. As you say let's wait. Jophine (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:27, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Project WIN

Hello,
We are planning a project to improve WikiProject India (English Wikipedia). I'd appreciate if you kindly leave your feedback here --Tito Dutta (talk) 09:58, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

I am afraid I do not get it. The real issue seems to be with editors having a viewpoint based on identifying themselves with a specific group - in this case by being of Indian nationality. Not sure if forming a group would really alter cliquish behaviour. Shyamal (talk) 03:23, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Reversion of edit to Frog (Respiration and circulation)

I don't understand the rationale behind this reversion. "Multilingual dictionary"? My edit was not attempting to define anything. The restored text is long-winded, contains superfluous information (the date of the frog's discovery is not important), and follows poorly from the preceding text. My version was not perfect—that whole section is disjointed and should be rewritten—but I don’t see how it’s worse than the restored one. Larry V (talk | email) 19:21, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

I just looked more closely at the page history. It seems that you were intending to revert some earlier changes that were unrelated to mine. Since those changes had already been undone, I'll assume you accidentally reverted my edit as collateral damage. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Larry V (talk | email) 19:51, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

@Larry V: oops sorry, that was a bad revert on my part. I can only say that I was looking at that specific editor's contributions which were all on a common theme and I missed the fact that it had already been fixed. Shyamal (talk) 02:11, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Indeed I have registered as MadhavDGadgil as a Wikipedia User, using my real name, which in full is Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil. I presume I am fairly well known, having a Wikipedia article devoted to me. I appreciate that using the real name may lead to some harassment, but I am not worried, it should be an interesting experience. On the other hand, I hope that using my real name may serve as an encouragement to others with similar interests in nature-friendly and people-oriented development to get involved. I have long been a regular newspaper columnist in Marathi, with an extensive readership and am particularly hoping that more and more people will get involved in Marathi Wikipedia as well. Let us see how it goes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MadhavDGadgil (talkcontribs)

pied bushchat female image

Dear Sir, I am a regular contributor to the birds section at India Nature Watch and had only offered a better quality image of the piedbush chat female for totally educational purpose on the wikepedia page. I agree the image was water marked and since this was my first contribution here I was unaware of that plus the fact that I had mentioned the exact location. My intention was not to patronise /advertise/ offend / misquote. I am sorry if I have offended unknowingly. However if you feel fit I shall be glad to provide the images without any watermark with your consent. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Birds

You have reverted some of my edits...68.100.166.209 (talk) 17:32, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

There were a number of breaks between the order-names - it is possible that they were introduced accidentally by the visual editor(?) but they were rather unsightly. I am not sure if every clade needs to be indicated in that box - it is essentially to provide a quick index to the bird groups. Please discuss it at WT:BIRD and register a user name as that template is highly used and needs some protection. Shyamal (talk) 01:38, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Columbea & Passerea

my recent edits on Columbea have been reverted. I don't understand the reason. Current form the classification in Columbea section of the template is inconsistent with what's written in Columbea article. 68.100.166.209 (talk) 17:22, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

In addition, the classification of Passerea-section is also inconsistent with the article Passerea. These sections in the template are wrong and needs corrections. Why did you put the incorrect template under protection? 68.100.166.209 (talk) 17:27, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Have removed the word-breaks and reverted to your last revision. The template is highly used and should have been protected a long time back. You only need to be a registered and confirmed user to edit it. Shyamal (talk) 01:45, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
