Welcome to Wikipedia

edit

Normally, after making some edits, some admin will give you a welcome message with links that you won't care about and some other mailmerged friendliness. I just wanted to say thanks for expanding the Quantic Dream stub to an actual article and saving it from deletion. - Hahnchen 02:04, 18 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I didn't even notice my lack of a welcome message. I've toyed around with Wikipedia for some time now, but never bothered to register. Thanks for the welcome! — SG 17:33, 18 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

SCC justices

edit
  • Yeah, well, PUYS and I reverted them back, he agrees it's a copyvio. Besides, why do you support copying and pasting? Do you enjoy hurting Wikipedia? CanadianCaesar 00:57, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
    • How can it be a copyright violation when the SCC states that it isn't? Wikipedia is about quality, yes, but when there is no quality to fill an area, quantity must substitute. How can more information be hurting Wikipedia? Please review the copyright terms of the SCC carefully. ♠ SG →Talk 01:31, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
      • Wikipedia is not a mirror. Copying and pasting is not information, it's a violation of that rule, IMO even when it's in public domain. I did review the copyvio info on the SCC website, and I believe the references on the Wikipedia article were not specific enough. At any rate, I want people who know about this in full to review it. That's what copyvio notices are for- it's not speedy deletion nor even AfD, it's a review. You can dispute whatever you want, but if you're right, the articles will not be deleted. PUYS, who is a law student, also says that the GFDL does not accomodate this. Besides, PUYS actually rewrote the articles as Temp pages. At the end of the day we will not end up with red links. CanadianCaesar 01:36, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
        • I didn't give any proof of a copyvio? I provided a link to a website with identical content- a very reputable website- that's all I need to do, and I've done it before. Marking things as copyvios are a drain on those who have to clean up after cut and pasters, I don't think they should be required to do anything more. Hi there! I'd like to invite you to explore Wikimedia Canada, and create a list of people interested in forming a local chapter for our nation. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization, within our great nation. We'd also like to encourage everyone to suggest projects for our national chapter to participate in. Pink Floyd for FA

edit

I just wanted to let you know that most of the issues mentioned in the Pink Floyd FA candidacy have been addressed, if you want to have a look (audio clips aren't there yet due to some technical issues, and I can't make anyone unfamiliar with the band go over it :)). Thanks for your input! - dharmabum 22:58, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the kudos. I have thought about adminship, as most editors who like to vandal patrol, as the rollback and blocking tools would be extremely useful. I think I'm pretty familiar with WP's processes and policies at this point, but I've only been around on the site (as a registered user) for two months, and have less than 2000 edits. Based on voting on and reading of the RFA page, I'm not sure I'm quite ready to go through the whole thing - despite Jimbo's declaration that adminship shouldn't be a big deal, it has seemed to become one in the last half-year or so, and length of time as a registered user and edit count seems to play a big part in that. - dharmabum 09:53, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mohammad Reza Shah

edit

"Hello, if you have a problem with the way we have made the Mohammad Reza Shah article, please talk about it "

I'm sorry but fixing grammatical inconsistencies and certain spelling errors is not something you revert back. Furthermore, the article lacks detail and a wide scope of examples and sources which would further explain the events and people described in the article. Adding these is not something you should revert back. Could you please explain why you removed my work? Entezar

Sorry but neither you or anyone else has ownership over that article and I saw no conversation about translation of the styles. If you have a problem my edits (adding translations back to it) feel free to talk about it in the talk page and then I will discuss them, until then, I am reverting your revert which has no basis but your imaginery ownership over it --K a s h Talk | email 22:44, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Look at the Mohammad Reza Shah talk page, and look at your talk page. I linked you to the exact discussion about the translations. You do not need to translate it, because we are already linking to an article which explains the term in greater detail. Why must you bicker over such an edit, which adds more cleanliness to the article? ♠ SG →Talk 23:40, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Please stop using the words "we" and "you", because it makes it sound like a personal matter. I have also removed your personal attack and accusations from my talk page, see WP:Civil yourself. I discussed my change on the talk page of the article after I changed it so if there is any anything else I can help you with, let me know. --K a s h Talk | email 23:45, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
The words "we" and "you?" "We" refers to Wikipedia. "You" refers to you, if you couldn't figure that out. How else would you like me to call you? I won't even bother responding on your talk page, as what I said was not a personal attack, it was a statement about you starting an edit war. You seem to think you have the final word on the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi article, which you do not. I have discussed this already. On the talk page, there are two of us who have agreed to not add the translations, because we (again, I'm referring to the article with "we") are already linking to their respective articles. You, on the other hand, are one person. Is this not a democracy? Please, engage in a real discussion, just ignoring what I have to say doesn't make you right, and it doesn't make me wrong. ♠ SG →Talk 06:19, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sadly "you" are not the spokeman fom wikipedia, therfore "you" my friend, needs to speak in a neutral manner. I never said I want to have the final word on it, I just added translations back as they were before and asked you to discuss it before reverting. Democracy is just one part of Wikipedia, until you can provide a proper explanation and maybe a vote is taken on the matter, "you" should not revert my edits. "you" keep refering me to your conversation with your buddy, but "you" should realize that was before and it was not on this matter alone. Therefore "you" should stop being rude, assume good faith so we can get on with editing the article. Thanks, --K a s h Talk | email 07:57, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Myth

edit

What makes you state that the acronym SAVAK could not be preceded by an article "the" ?? Supposedly in contrast to "The CIA" ?? SAVAK stands for the words: Sazman-e Amniat va Etela'at-e Keshvar (Persian for: State Agency in charge of Security and Intelligence). Therefor please note that an article "the" would be in place the same way it would be for CIA, in stark contrast to your assertion. --Pantherarosa 00:24, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

While I do admit that it is difficult to find the proper form, both seem to be acceptable. However, from what I have been able to gather, "SAVAK" is more popular than "the SAVAK." Searching .EDU results for "The SAVAK" returns 146 results, while simply "SAVAK" nets 788. In addition, I should note that the article for SAVAK doesn't use the term "the SAVAK," so I'm also maintaining the same style throughout articles.
While your point about the translation seems right, I've never actually seen a real translation of SAVAK used in English (unlike its replacement, the Ministry of Intelligence and National Security). ♠ SG →Talk 01:04, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've added the future game template to the some references for the bugs in Final Fantasy VI and some additional references throughout the article. However, as far as the other things you mentioned go, there's quite a lot of criticism in there already, and the new FMV cutscenes (if those are what you were referring to) are already mentioned. Please see the FAC for a more in-depth response, and also let us know if it's enough to turn the "Oppose" around. Thanks. Ryu Kaze 20:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cyrus the great

edit

As i explained all images should start with intruduction of a section not the headline, just take a look at all other articles in wikipedia, also the images permission is given by the webadress i mentioned in the images summary. I appreciate that you have worked on the article, but wikipedia does not belong to anyone, we are all here to edit, and i will be editing that article more in the future. --Spahbod 04:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

You wrote: nor did you provide accurate licensing information. I suggest you take a look at the image summary, licence is there along with information on where i got the image and the permission to use it. Furthermore if you continue to remove images i will have to report=block. Thank you. Spahbod 04:25, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think you should worry about breaking Wikipedia:Three-revert rule more than me. I will now report you for destructive behavior. Again keep in mind that articles in wikipedia do not belong to anyone. Once again take a look at other articles to see where images should be placed, you can learn more about editing in wikipedia help. Also comments like you did about me spell checking at least, such comments will get you blocked from editing, instead of sending personal attacks, fix the spelling. The article is far away from FA which you seem to desire, and again i will be editing that article in the future, if you will be uncooprative and wage further revert wars you will be blocked, so simple is that. Good luck --Spahbod 04:42, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from making further personal attacks or you will be blocked. You wrote: The least you could have done was spellcheck your edits to the article. Such behavior and waging revert wars, deleting fair images etc is NOT permitted in wikipedia, please read the policies to understand the rules better. Thank you. --Spahbod 04:51, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

By saying deleted i meant deleted from the article, not deleted from wikipedia, please see wikipedia help for further information. The image licenses are what they say they are. Consider this a warning and do not change license information on images or you will be blocked for vandalism. Thank you. --Spahbod 04:59, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deleting image info is vandalism. In the future refrain from doing that. Thank you. --Spahbod 05:16, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am afraid the disscussion is over. You only seem to be interested in deleting images and changing their info. Sending personal attacks and reverting. You have been reported for this, in the future please be cooperative. As i mentioned before i will be working on that article. --Spahbod 05:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sending false information and accusations to user KwH is not helping you. Again i will be editing the Cyrus article you worked on, so if you want it to go esay you have to be cooperative, i suggest you calm down and remember that i am not your enemy :). Thank you, --Spahbod 18:36, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Royal Styles

edit

Sorry for not getting back earlier, but-

I checked the guidelines, and found the normal list (I assume you've seen that). I'm fairly sure there was something about appending them in front of a title somewhere, I remember seeing it, but I can't find it as of now. Anyway, my reasoning was: the initial policy was enacted because people were complaining about royalty being styled in an article-therefore the regulation about infoboxes and not prefacing them was added. While I can't find the guideline now, I think it would apply if extrapolated to anywhere where royalty are directly described by a style, ie HM King X or whatever, which is why the HRH's have been trimmed out of most articles. Nontheless, I can't find the rule, so it's fine if you want to rv it. Thanks,

Concerning architects

edit

Thanks for your comments re the featured biography page. I had to bring up the Frank Lloyd Wright thing though - I am very curious as to how anyone could think him more important and influential than Le Corbusier. LC was probably the most important pioneer of Modernist architecture, whose ideas, buildings and techniques transformed the face of most cities in the twentieth century. FLW was certainly famous and talented, but had virtually no influence on architecture: rather like Gaudi, he will be remembered as taking architecture up an interesting cul-de-sac.--Stonemad GB 23:58, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Supermarine Spitfire nom

edit

Hi SG!
I knew they'd be controversy over whatever decision the closer of this nom made! Anyway I personally feel that it wasn't closed correctly. Here are the points of my case: ;-)
If there are multiple edits, and someone specifies their preference to the edit, unless specifically stated (such as with Diliff) there vote is only for that edit - and therefore they oppose all other edits. So that is why "oppose" votes to edits are usually discounted (for instance I could have opposed edits 1-3 but that isn't necessary).
Therefore by a straight vote count edit 4 has the majority:
Original - 2
Edit 1 - 0
Edit 2 - 6
Edit 3 - 3
Edit 2/3 - 1
Edit 4 - 7
Edit 5 - 0
Any edit - 4
See what you think --Fir0002 06:07, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Whoops! Just realized since there is a vote for either 2 or 3 it could be a draw - in which case I think it should be kept in the pending futher input section. --Fir0002 06:31, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah maybe a rock paper scissors might be the best bet! However AndonicO has since specified his vote for Edit 4 - so maybe we go that way? --Fir0002 07:44, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:RezaPahlaviII.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Sorry to interfere with that discussion, but FYI: Being registered on both wikimedia commons and fr.wikipedia under the name Pentocelo my page on fr.wiki, I've achieved myself the OTRS permission process N°2006112210022386 with Mr Jona Lendering, from Livius.org. A copy was sent of our mail exchange to the wikimedia suport team from wich I keep personal copies. This OTRS conerned 19 images from my gallery in the commons but never concerned the cyrus cilinder image, and 5 other images Amizzoni loaded from Livius, all archieved by him under this OTRS permission. Therefore, I contacted a wikimedia commons administrator and asked all these images to be deleted, after having edited the licensing of the concerned images. 217.15.92.33 13:04, 16 February 2007 (UTC). Positive solution found with Amizzoni, I may help him to get an OTRS for these pictures with their authors, definatly solving the copyrights problems. 217.15.92.33 09:44, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reverting the recent changes to Oshawa's page. I was just watching the recorded version of The Colbert Report and went on wiki to see if someone had made the changes he suggested, and sure enough, they did.

Image:Miahamm jump cropped.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Miahamm jump cropped.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof 18:43, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for commenting on my talk page, but it hasn't changed my mind. There is a basic logical flaw in this argument:

  • Guideline: We highly reccomend doing these, but they are not required.
  • Policy: Absolutely required.
  • Result: Despite the fact that there is a clear delineation between what is required and what is not required, one must do both or receive a never-ending stream of messages about how he is not a team player.

The simple facts of the matter are these:

  • The image hasn't been updated in nearly two years and it is probably not going to be, unlike my old sig pics.
  • This body of text has more information in it than that image.
  • I am not required to "collaborate" in the manner that you say, and I should therefore not be harassed for a choice I make within the rules of this project by implying that I am somehow detrimental to that project despite my nearly two years of helping out here. This is like saying marijuana is illegal, and not wearing a hat with a picture of a marijuana plant on it is strongly reccomended. For the former, the police can arrest you, but for the latter, instead of arresting you, the police just stand out in front of your house all day with a bull horn telling you about the evils of marijuana.

As I've said countless times in the past, if everyone at Wikipedia decides to make this guideline a policy, I'd be more than happy to comply. In the meantime, either prove to me that I'm personally bringing down the servers or kindly leave me alone. JHMM13   20:09, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply. I would like to ask you again to look through the difference between a guideline and a policy. I could link this information for you if you find it difficult to find. You skipped over the portion of my text that says that this image has not been updated in nearly two years, nor is it ever likely to be updated. I also believe you missed the part where it is my right as a user to make this choice for myself and not be harassed about the choice I make. I do not think that the users of Wikipedia come up with guidelines "for shits and giggles," but could you please explain to me what that has to do with requirements? If you would like me to slowly explain to you the significance of my "ridiculous" analogy, I will happily do it for you, but for now I respectfully ask you to read it again and find the parts that are troublesome for you. Thanks again, and do respond on my talk page as quickly as your (no doubt heavy) schedule allows. JHMM13   23:41, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see you've done a great job protecting such pages as Cyrus the Great against damage. Intentional, repeated damage is vandalism, and editors who perform repeated acts of vandalism can only be termed vandals. I hope you're able to join me in tracking the future edits of known, active Wikipedia vandals, and protecting other articles from him/her as well. Bete Noir 19:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Reza Shah

edit

Hi. Please take a look at the recent edits on the Reza Shah article. The article is now in a terrible condition since a few people started "adding references", which in their opinion apparently means removing anything positive regarding the man. Shervink 10:43, 8 March 2007 (UTC)shervinkReply

I totally agree, that was in fact also my initial suggestion. I'm only concerned about that resulting possibly in an edit war, because of some hard feelings on the part of some editors critical of Reza Shah. That should be avoided. It's a pity to see such a good article ruined like this. Shervink 09:12, 9 March 2007 (UTC)shervinkReply

I see you are very active in vandalizing this article. Look, if you dont like something you dont simply vandalize it by erasing it. You go to the discussion page to present your arguements. Re: Deleted images

edit

Please see this report on ANI. The website from where the images were uploaded was found to be violating copyrights itself. Hence these images were most likely copyvios, and with no evidence suggesting otherwise, I speedily deleted the images. - Aksi_great (talk) 16:31, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

You need to provide a source which says that the image is from 1971. The law says that it has to be 30 years after publication date. So you need a source for that image and prove that the source was published before 1977. Also, I wouldn't trust any reply from cais-soas. They have been releasing images which clearly do not belong to them with a GFDL license. If you read the ANI thread properly, there is sufficient proof to believe that User:ParthianShot was the person running the website or at least involved with the running of the website. - Aksi_great (talk) 17:16, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
1977-1971!=36 years. It is quite reasonable to think that a photo could get published 6 years after the event. - Aksi_great (talk) 17:57, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I would be happy to undelete any image for you if you want a copy and then delete it again so that you can search for its source when you get time. - Aksi_great (talk) 17:58, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry but without a source, I am not willing to undelete the images. We don't assume things when it comes to copyrights. I have a book in which pictures from 1920 were published in 1998. - Aksi_great (talk) 03:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you do not agree with me, you can seek a review at WP:DRV. - Aksi_great (talk) 03:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
As I had said before, we do not assume things when it comes to copyrights. We err on the side of caution. I am not going to undelete the image until you get me a source. So speculating about when the image would have been published is a waste of time. Please don't take this personally. These are just rules which everyone at wikipedia has to follow. - Aksi_great (talk) 04:09, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
You could ask at the Iranian noticeboard if anyone has any book which contains some pictures, or old magazines or something. - Aksi_great (talk) 04:14, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, thanks for pointing out that I hadn't removed them from the main page; I must have copied instead of cut when archiving them. This is my first time doing this since the university semester ended, but I have closed an awful lot of FPC nominations, infact there used to be a time when I was pretty much the only one doing them. That hasn't been for a while though so I apologise if there have been some changes in practice since then. I'll go through the noms one by one and explain what I was thinking (or not thinking in several cases):

  • I agree the whale shark one was a little harsh, I will put that one back up in the 'requiring input' section.
  • For as long as I had been closing FPC's, whenever a nom received less than 4 support votes it was closed as not promoted. This nom also had gone over 10 days without a comment, so it didn't seem likely that any further discussion would take place. If you'd like to put this one back up you can.
  • I stand by my promotion of the Filipino casualties picture. At the end of the period consensus was clearly in its favour. Of couse if you disagree please feel free to relist it; I won't argue but I don't believe I was wrong.
  • Finally, for the water one I think I might try taking a leaf out of Raul654's book. Occasionally when discussion has stagnated on a Featured Article candidate, he will relist the article with a fresh, empty nomination page. I think that would be best for this case. Discussion seen to very easily stagnate on FPC recently; the average nom more than a few days old gets minimal attention, if any. I think this one needs to start afresh to give the larger version a chance on its own merits.

Thanks for pointing out your concerns. I feel kind of bad now that I jumped in and messed everything up... I'll relist those two right now, and if you want to do anything else please go ahead. Raven4x4x 14:05, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done. Sorry again about all this; I did sort of mess a few of them up, didn't I. Raven4x4x 14:26, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:ZidaneHeadbutt.gif

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:ZidaneHeadbutt.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 11:27, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see you think it is irrelevant, but then why don't you remove the pieces mentioning that the empire was the greatest ever seen etc.?
