Question from Aishamohamed101 (17:11, 29 January 2024) edit

hello rusty, i am very new to this and im struggling greatly with creating a biography even though i am using reliable sources --Aishamohamed101 (talk) 17:11, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Aishamohamed101: Have you read Help:Your first article and Help:Referencing for beginners? Also, if you cannot find much information on a person, that person may not currently be seen as "notable" by Wikipedia, no matter how important you think they are.
However, remember that creating articles isn't the only way to help out. There are lots of small ways to help out, which are listed at Wikipedia:Task Center.

Question from Beauzo2979 (14:10, 30 January 2024) edit

how do you make one of those side description things in your talk page? --Beauzo2979 (talk) 14:10, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Beauzo2979: On my userpage I used {{infobox user}} (click the link to see template). On my talk page I'm using the template {{talk page header}} Rusty4321 talk contribs 00:04, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Beauzo2979 (14:41, 30 January 2024) edit

Can you look at my more recent edits and tell me if I am doing well, and if not what I can improve on? --Beauzo2979 (talk) 14:41, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Beauzo2979: You're doing better. If you haven't, I suggest you read Help:Your first article. Most importantly from that help page is that your draft has lots of reliable sources. Also, if you want to ask another question, it would be helpful that you reply to your previous message, so that all your questions are in one place. Question from Beauzo2979 (14:47, 30 January 2024) edit

I would like to start reverting pages after vandalism, but I don't know how to find the pages that have been vandalized, and I don't know how to revert it once you have found it. --Beauzo2979 (talk) 14:47, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Beauzo2979: You can do recent-changes patrolling (click the link), which is where you go to the Special:RecentChanges page and open "diff" links to scan for vandalism.
When you find vandalism, you can click the "undo" text (above the username; next or below the text "revision as of... (edit)". Write the edit summary, and click publish. Always remember to warn the user as well.

Question from Mian Usman Khalid (06:56, 30 January 2024) edit

Hello! how to write new article about political person? and i wanna add articles about personalties which is not shown in wikipedia ? --Mian Usman Khalid (talk) 06:56, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mian Usman Khalid: You can write articles about people that do not have articles in Wikipedia, but you must not write about people you have connections with, and there need to be sources that support what the article says. Thank you. Rusty4321 talk contribs 00:19, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Aishamohamed101 (07:18, 30 January 2024) edit

Hello Rusty! your i have carefully read your suggested articles and they were very helpful, thank you for that.

i am facing an issue with my sandbox tho, i have already published my draft once for review and it got declined, so i edited it again but i cant seem to publish it again for review, is there anything I'm missing? --Aishamohamed101 (talk) 07:18, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

You seem to have removed the top four lines when adding new content, including line containing the AFC submission button. I've added it back for you. I also would suggest only listing current occupations as to prevent an enormously large size of the infobox.
Feel free to ask if you have more questions. Rusty4321 talk contribs 00:24, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Sicfilth13 (23:50, 3 February 2024) edit

If I use Wikipedia to gain experience editing articles, do you think this would be a valid and effective way to get my foot in the door for a career in editing? --Sicfilth13 (talk) 23:50, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Warfrost on Straightedge and compass construction (23:48, 5 February 2024) edit

Hello, I know how to trisect an unknown angle and wish to add it to Wikipedia. I tried once before, but can't find page. How do I go about adding "Trisecting Unknown Angles" to Wikipedia? Any help you may offer will be appreciated, thank you. --Warfrost (talk) 23:48, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Warfrost: Your writing has been saved to Wikipedia as a Draft, with the characters Draft: in front of the name, at Draft:Trisecting an Unknown Angle
Unfortunately, it bears little chance of being accepted in its current state as we require sources that support our content.
Also, there already exists an article Angle trisection that you could add to.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Rusty4321 talk contribs 00:08, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from FashionableSavage (17:43, 2 February 2024) edit

Hi Rusty,

Do I need to have 10 edits prior to publishing a page? Journalist by background so didn't know if it was worth making the page attempt or waiting. --FashionableSavage (talk) 17:43, 2 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@FashionableSavage: You don’t necessarily have to. Before 10 edits, you can create a “draft” page which is then reviewed. However, I recommend reading Help:Your first article. Also, please do not write on a topic where you have an external relationship. That is known as a ”conflict of interest”.
The reason your article was moved to “draftspace” was because it was too promotional. At the end of the day, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, therefore we need to make sure our content is neutral.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Rusty4321 talk contribs 16:50, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from JanitaF on User:Tamzin (11:47, 12 February 2024) edit

Hello. I am so new to this Wikipedia, and I am lost in translation. I have tried to update the page for my friend, based on the document we wrote together and tried to put it up on Wikipedia (as a correction) and thought that was already complicated. Now I see it is no longer there, and it says it is because I may have a conflict of interest. Probably because I wrote it too positively? Can you help me and tell me how to work this out? I clicked on a bunch of stuff and got more lost while doing so. I am I think a little too old for this. This is the page I updated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kafulila --JanitaF (talk) 11:47, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from JanitaF (11:55, 12 February 2024) edit

Hello. My name is Janita, and I tried to update the page of my friend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kafulila. We created the update together. I can share his email address if need be. thought it was already very hard to update his profile,, but now it says that I may have a conflict of interest. Maybe we wrote it too positively? I tried to add as many links to verify the information. I clicked on many links when I received that message but got lost in that. Could you possibly help me with the next steps? Maybe review? I'm so sorry to bother you, but I don't know how to move this forward. Warm regards, Janita --JanitaF (talk) 11:55, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@JanitaF: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. First of all, do not share email addresses, because anyone can see them! Also, Wikipedia pages are not called "profiles" like on social media, they are "articles" like in an encyclopedia.
On Wikipedia, the meaning of "conflict of interest" is writing or updating information about someone you know or have a connection with (read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest if you would like to know more). We require that all articles be written in a neutral way (neither too positive nor too negative). Most importantly, you should declare this conflict of interest on your userpage (the link with your username at the top-right).
Type the below line of text in your userpage, click 'publish changes', then continue reading my response.
{{UserboxCOI|David Kafulila}}
With the declaration finished, I can now tell your about adding the content. Our policy says that these updates should not be directly added to the article by you. Each article has a discussion page ("Talk" tab towards the top-left) that can be used for adding requests of what you want to change, with sources. Follow the instructions in Template:Edit COI#How to use.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Rusty4321 talk contribs 01:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Tj363 (20:34, 15 February 2024) edit

Hi, someone keeps undoing my edit which has been happening for a month now. How should I respond? --Tj363 (talk) 20:34, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tj363: Even if you are not being compensated for the edit, it is still a conflict of interest as you state that "[t]his edit was requested by the Yale Athletic Department" here, which construes a connection with Yale. (Even Yale does not have the right to state what their Wikipedia article may or may not say.)
Also, on the talk page, it looks like you're either telling other people to put "I agree" or creating new accounts to do so. I would like you to know that this is not allowed and could result in a block from Wikipedia. Rusty4321 talk contribs 01:21, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Yani.koleff (12:03, 4 March 2024) edit

Hello, how do I move from draft to article? --Yani.koleff (talk) 12:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Yani.koleff: Your draft has been declined for not having any reliable sources. At Wikipedia, we need all articles to have sources, so we can make sure the things they talk about are real. Like the reviewer said, please read WP:VERIFY. Also see Help:Your first article for more tips/suggestions on writing an article on Wikipedia.
After looking at your Draft, I see you have a conflict of interest on that subject. Please read WP:COI and note that it is hard to write neutrally with a COI. I recommend you to not write an article on the subject, and wait for another person (who does not have conflict of interest) to write it instead.
Feel free to ask if you have any further questions. Rusty4321 talk contribs 20:46, 4 March 2024 (UTC) Updated 20:53, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I edit

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Question of how to make admins revert or rollback some edit on protected article edit

Can you tell me how can i make admin revert or rollback edit on protected article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by We wuzz kangzz (talkcontribs) 16:09, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@We wuzz kangzz: Most of the time, if the edit is vandalism, it will get reverted quickly by other editors that have access to the page. Articles are rarely fully-protected (meaning only admins can access), more commonly semi-protected or extended-confirmed protected. Could I have a page name or diff for the edit you want to revert? Hello, welcome to Wikipedia! All articles here follow our general notability guideline and notability guideline for people. In short, the person must be published in multiple secondary sources, such as news articles, and receive significant coverage, such as a state or national news article about the person, and not just a brief mention in an article.
