WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

• Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
• Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
• AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
• Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
• MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
• Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. List of self-driving system suppliers

Hi @Rodw, I saw that you have made revisions to the page List of self-driving system suppliers and would like to suggest an addition to the Light Vehicles table. The company Mobileye, is supplying self-driving systems to Volkswagen to bring autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles to the streets. Testing is currently underway in Austin, Texas and Munich, Germany. The exact launch city and date of the first public road driverless operation has yet to be announced.

Oh, Thank God. I found someone finally. Sir, I was just searching about my tribe on internet and i found nothing on wikipedia, then i decided to put some info on the wikipedia, but all the stuff, the editor, the interface every thing is a lot difficult to understand, maybe i feels this way. But it's too much complicated to find help. And i found no one. where is the wikipedia community? What are the options for like talk? sandbox? preferences? etc well these are a lot of question,, but just expressing my feelings...

I don't know which tribe you are looking for? Editing can be difficult when you first start but the links I put on your talk page should help. You can always ask for help at the teahouse. Each artuicle will also have a talk page - look at the tabs along the top, you can also set up your own sandbox try User:Javed Ullah MGI (MullaGHORI)/sandbox. Which article are you talking about the list was deleted? If it was Mulagori you can look at the revision history. Perhaps it was this edit with an edit summary "back to last good version; formatting problems, using another mirror as a source" or this edit with the edit summary "Snipping some of the more blatant peacock puffery and unsourced claims". New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Help

Hi @Rodw,I created a draft regarding some engagement between two Kingdoms. It was well sourced(according to me). I was sure that I would get result, as draft being accepted or declined in one or either two weeks but it has been over 5 weeks. My article is in draft space only. It is neither getting accepted nor getting declined.

Which raised another question, on Good Form on W'pedia: The above page, and a number of others, refer to the Comité Interprofessionel du Vin de Champagne, CIVC with its own page. But at its own page (the only External Link on the CIVC wiki page), all their publicity materials, and anywhere that I met their official representatives (and talked to / emailed with them in person), they refer to themselves as 'Comité Champagne'. There is no CIVC web site anymore... Now, would we do better to use the short name e.g., in wiki texts, or do we stick with naming them something they don't seem to want to talk about anymore at all themselves ..? And/or, how would we bulk update all references to the CIVC on all sorts of wiki pages (possibly with reference to the "CIVC" as previous designator)? Jvdvlugt (talk) 09:44, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Care is needed as CIVC could also relate to the TV channel & private equity firm, and this list shows many other articles including CIVC. The Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne article includes a citation with CIVC in it but this is an external link. Thanks. It's like this, and it's complicated. On 22nd January 1928, the Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd introduced a silver currency with a new riyal coin in the likeness of the Maria Theresa thaler, and here is a link about it, https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces20478.html. But now I have noticed something that I don't quite understand. Although the concept of Saudi Arabia didn't exist until 1932, and this coin was issued in 1928, the link that I have supplied claims that there is an inscription on the reverse side of the coin which mentions the term Saudi Arabia. On the talk page at British currency in the Middle East there is an editor who can translate Arabic. I'm going there to ask if that inscription actually is on the coin. It's strange, because it contradicts the wording on the obverse of the coin. ThreeDrunkenLeopards (talk) 12:29, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

I got a reply from editor Makeandtoss, and apparently the 1928 coin does actually say "one Arab, Saudi riyal" on the reverse, but he explained that the term Saudi will not have been used in conjunction with the name of the country KSA that was defined in 1932. The Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd was of course ruled by the Saud family. Nevertheless, the Saudi riyal as such began in 1936 when a new currency was introduced at par with the Indian rupee. This would seem to have been done to align the Saudi Arabian currency with the British Protectorates along the south and east coasts, that were all now using Indian rupees. Prior to that, Ottoman piastres would have been circulating with the Maria Theresa thaler rated at 20 piastres. The 1928 coin was not therefore a Saudi riyal in the current sense of the word. WikiCup 2024 July newsletter

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:

• Generalissima (submissions) with 1,059 points, mostly from 1 featured article on DeLancey W. Gill, 11 good articles, 18 did you know nominations, and dozens of reviews;
• Skyshifter (submissions) with 673 points, mostly from 2 featured articles on Worlds (Porter Robinson album) and I'm God, 5 good articles, and 2 did you know nominations;
• Sammi Brie (submissions) with 557 points, mostly from 1 featured article on KNXV-TV, 5 good articles, and 8 did you know nominations; and
• AryKun (submissions) with 415 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Great cuckoo-dove, with a high number of bonus points from that article.

The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points.
