Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added such as to the page Isle of Portland do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion, and doing so is contrary to the goals of this project. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Charles (talk) 18:38, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

WHAT?? How did it break a guideline? I am not use it as a form of "promotion"... you are obviously jaded on this, why would you think I was adding it as some link collection?

Did you even LOOK at the site?

It is about PORTLAND in it's entirety, 100% relevant, there is NO advertising on the site, no adsense etc. I posted it here because I would like people who are looking for info about Portland to be able to read it if they so choose... has anyone complained about the site? Not likely, why not give me the benefit of the doubt?

It is lame when you have other peoples site who I know in life for real you know... and they have ads on there sites etc. what gives? Why are the others ok and not mine?

Please explain what guidleline I broke?

I am very reluctant to help out on here now, if you knew me and the fact I passionately write about Portland regularly I'd have contributed, but not if it's all one sided.

Well done, you alienated a new user. Rob

Thanks, you did more than Charles, who just ignored me and I know that because he took it down again after I posted.. I can't believe that, show me what is so unique on them other sites linked that can't be said about mine?

Shame... I won't bother with this then, a user driven site and you treat them like this? Not sure why I should bother. it's ONE link, and at least it's blooduy genuine from a REAL poprtlander not some fake from elsewhere, So you would be happy for me to donate content, but not even allow me a link??!!! wow... talk about one sided.

Charles has a page on here promoting his own stuff, so I could do that?? lol... how silly.

Try to share my own experiences of this unique place and that itself makes my site unique, an ONGOING living site which I add to at least twice a week, all I wanted for that was that your readers benefit from a different perspective of Portland, shame on me for trying to help.

Ok, thanks for that reply.

Best of luck, I will close my account I think and leave you too it, can't be doing with one rule for some and one for others. I know that's true... I have proof of my own now. thanks. Regards.

One annoyed portlander! What a waste of time and no wonder a few friends have said to me wiki is a one sided time suck to help with.

So, I won't bother. Thanks Charles...STIRLING job of doing the place a disservice itself by the lack of explanation for your actions and then putting off a new user who had good intentions.

Thank you Barret for the reply. Robsellen (talk) 18:27, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I believe you added the link to the Portland Bill and Isle of Portland article in good faith as a useful source of information so I am sorry that you are feeling disillusioned with their removal. However, in my opinion the decision to remove the links was correct and I will try to add further explanation. Wikipedia has a number of guidelines for external link inclusion which were included in the message left above by Charles. For example, Links normally to be avoided:
1. Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article.
4. Links mainly intended to promote a website
11. Links to blogs, personal web pages and most fansites, except those written by a recognized authority.
Furthermore, it is recommended that you should avoid linking to a site that you own, maintain, or represent to avoid a conflict of interest. Wikipedia:Spam may also provide more information for you and advises that the inclusion of one spam link is not a reason to include another. I hope this explanation is helpful and that this has not discouraged you from contributing to Wikipedia. --Barret (talk) 16:41, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

added... do I have to go delete everything before closing the account, or does it all do so anyway? Not only here, but where I posted elsewhere.

Thanks.. Robsellen (talk) 18:52, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

No need to do anything. Your account will lie dormant for you to use anytime you have a positive contribution to make. Do not take this personally. We fight a constant battle against advertising and other good faith linking. There is not always time for personal explanations.--Charles (talk) 20:09, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I had positive contributions to make, but put off that now seeing as it's all take from one side and the fact any contribution could just be deleted anytime with no explanation makes me feel the effort and time would be better spent where more appreciated. Thanks anyway for the reply.

I did't take anything personally, I as annoyed at the sheer press of a button to wipe out what took me 20 mins to do which I did in good faith of the site. I don't deny you probably do battle spammers and such, having been a moderator on several big forums I know what it can be like, but there is NOT advertising on that site just as I said before. Regardless, I know where I stand with it.

If you can't make the time to explain, I can't make the time to help out, after all it's us helping someone else's business here. Regards. Robsellen (talk) 20:43, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
