Your recent edits edit

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button (  or  ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 11:51, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please stop with all the genre arguing edit

Hi there, I'm Serge, an Admin here at Wikipedia. You've only been here for one day, so I'll chalk this up to not knowing any better, but Wikipedia frowns upon people who just go around arguing about music genre. Genre is subjective, so its a waste of ones time and energy to go about arguing based on opinion alone. Because genre is subjective and open to interpretation, and because its the foundation of the entire website, we go by what reliable sources say, not our personal opinions. Otherwise, its just an endless cycle of people arguing and edit warring.

Basically, any time your suggest a change in genre without presenting a source, you're going to be ignored or denied, because that's now how it works here. Please provide sources for every genre you add or suggest. A list of commonly accepted and not accepted sources can be found at WP:MUSIC/SOURCES. Also keep in mind that a source not mentioning a genre doesn't necessarily warrant removal if other sources can back up the information.

If you continue to argue and change genre purely based on your own personal opinion, you will be blocked from editing for a time, as genre warring is considered disruptive.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. Sergecross73 msg me 13:17, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think rise against is half melodic hardcore but more punk if you dont think they are not punk you should look at good charlote thats not punk just my opinion they are more punkJg9443 (talk) 02:09, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

good charlotte are pop punk and now pop rock, not punk. punk is sex pistols, d.o.a, agent orange, adolescents, early suicidal tendencies and many more. rise against is melodic and alternative rock, also pop punk now, not punk. Realpunkmusic (talk) 14:30, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

August 2015 edit

You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you change genre in pages without discussion or sources, as you did at 30 Seconds to Mars (album). Binksternet (talk) 18:34, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dude punk rock is not about just politics theres gorila biscuits theres refuse and there is a moredern punk rock the mordern punk rock is rise against there is diffrent sounds to it get your facts straight.Jg9443 (talk) 19:55, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

i'm sorry but labeling rise against as hardcore punk is disrespectful, please listen to d.o.a, the exploited, the casualties, early suicidal tendencies etc to hear what hardcore punk sounds like. rise against are "melodic hardcore" at the most in their first 2-3 albums, then alternative rock + pop punk after that. Realpunkmusic (talk) 20:01, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

P.S since i said that i have a soulution you are right about 2 things one they have little bit of alternative rock in them and melodic hardcore but your also wrong about 2 things 1 they have that hardcore punk in theme they are one of the fans of many hardcore punk and punk rock bands and 2 they have punk rock in them as well. And just f.y.i you cannot judge punk rock by the way they sound and the way they look because if you look at it i know you do your research but look up the band and study about them because punk is not about politics and video games and others it is also has something to do with straight and the band excluding Barnes are straight edge thats what makes them punk rock. And again they are not rise against is an american punk rock band because ill be looking into that and turns they are rise against is a chicago punk rock band and genres punk rock , melodic hardcore , hardcore punk , pop rock , and alternative so what you can see we dont have to argue because you got what i want and what you want is that a deal just type in yes or no thank and come again.Jg9443 (talk) 20:17, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

you can't judge punk rock by the way they sound?? what do you mean? i'm talking about punk rock music here and rise against do not sound punk rock, their drumming is not fast enough, the guitar shredding isn't fast enough, the vocals aren't aggressive enough and they are melodic. i would be ok with melodic hardcore (early), alternative rock and pop punk. i am straight edge myself and do not have a mohawk, i am speaking strictly about music and their music is less punk rock than early green day (which most punk rock fans dispute as even being punk), they are not punk rock like adolescents, agent orange, bad brains, social distortion, minor threat, circle jerks, youth brigade, d.o.a etc thank you Realpunkmusic (talk) 20:24, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

You can do whatever you want to form your own personal opinion, but to contribute to Wikipedia you must abandon the idea that the genres you are hearing are the final word. Instead, you should be reading the reliable sources to see what they say about it, and putting that stuff in front of the reader, even if you think it is wrong. The reliable sources do not include AllMusic sidebar genres, user reviews on websites such as Sputnik, nor anything found on Rateyourmusic. Binksternet (talk) 20:35, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

i have already given plenty of other sources stating the genre's of rise against in the rise against talk page, check it out. Realpunkmusic (talk) 20:37, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

A vast majority of your sources don't directly say what you say they do, and rely on original research or interpretation, which is not allowed. A tip: it's not a good sign if you do a "ctrl f" search on a source and there are zero hits for the genre you're talking about on it. Sergecross73 msg me 21:48, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

no, read it again. i even plucked quotes out of each one stating pop punk and alternative. here it is again:

"While keeping with the typical pop punk feel of a Rise Against Album , lyrically The Black Market changes gears and drives away from what’s going on with the rest of the world and focuses on the band members themselves: less a political statement, this album is inspired by their experiences in the last 15 years as a band." http://www.myfreakinears.com/album-review-rise-black-market/

another one "the punk turned pop band rise against" http://gcmag.org/album-review-rise-againsts-endgame/ another one calling them pop punk

the ones i already showed you earlier: http://www.cmj.com/reviews/rise-against-%E2%80%93-endgame "Rise Against, the band of Chicago rock (previously punk), chose to continue the process of maturation on its newest release, Endgame"

another one "Chicagos Rise Against would like to be known as a punk band with both a social conscience and an ear for melody. Too bad frontman Tim McIlrath sings protest anthems that lean closer to the burnished angst of such bands as New Found Glory and Fall Out Boy than the genuine outrage of brainy Green Day." http://www.ew.com/article/2008/09/30/appeal-reason this one even refers to green day being more punk than rise against and green day are rightly listed as pop punk on wikipedia, think about that.

another one "It's been eight years since Rise Against's landmark record The Sufferer & The Witness, which was characterized by masterfully meshed pop-punk melody" http://exclaim.ca/Music/article/rise_against-black_market

there was another one which i am not allowed to post from dyingscene.com it's already disrespectful enough ridiculously labeling them as hardcore punk but then you also refuse to add pop punk to their genre and alternative rock.

now if you still dispute all of that there is something wrong with the people running this website or they are all band members from rise against. a real punk band would not have a single article with the word pop on it, rise against has many and rightly so. Blocked edit

You were warned by me initially to go by sources, and then given a final warning to stop changes genre against sources, and yet you continue to do so in this edit, where you remove genre that are not only sourced, but are a main point covered in the body of the article. Since you've already gotten your final warning, and then made this edit despite discussion on the talk page and sources being present, you are blocked from editing for 3 days. Sergecross73 msg me 20:39, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

If/when you come back, please:

  • Only make changes that can be backed with reliable sources.
  • Do not remove sourced content just because you disagree with it.
  • Read up on what it means to be a Wikipedia reliable source. While not blocked for it, you've proposed using a ton of sources that don't meet those standards. User-generated content like Rate Your Music or Sputnik Music User reviews are not allowed, nor are retail listing for shirts an authority on genre, for example.
  • Until you figure out what it means to be a reliable source, I recommend you stick to WP:MUSIC/SOURCES, as I've shown to you many times, and stick to using direct quotes that directly say the genre you are trying to prove.

If you fail to do these things, you'll likely find yourself blocked again. So please take this in consideration. Thanks. Sergecross73 msg me 20:43, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
