AfD nomination of Tangent between two circles edit

I have nominated Tangent between two circles, an article you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tangent between two circles. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Tangents between two circles edit

By minor I do not mean "easy". I mean "perhaps not important enough for its own article". I'd recommend taking a look at WP:MATH, WP:STYLE and WP:NOR. In particular, basically everything on Wikipedia needs to be cited. You aren't allowed to include your own proofs or derivations; you need to include ones that have been published elsewhere (like Gergonne's). Anyway, I'm just not sure whether this topic deserves its own article, or should be folded into another. TallNapoleon (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Right, it's true. But if someone else has already done it, there's probably a theorem already associated with it. Or something like that. It is best to cite sources where possible, so that you don't wind up with cranks putting their own pet theories here, and so that we don't have to worry about checking derivations. No, no! I wasn't calling you a crank; the math on that page looks correct and pretty orthodox. It's just important that we cite sources so we don't have to worry about someone coming along with, for example, a "proof" that pi is a rational number. I apologize if I caused offence. Name change OK with you? edit

Hi Rabi,

Would you be cool with changing the name of your article to "Tangent lines to circles"? I think that would help it dodge AfD by expanding the scope of the article somewhat. We don't have an article on that subject yet (at least, not all together at one spot) and I think it'd be a real win! :) I hope you don't mind that I threw in a bunch of stuff, thinking you'd be OK with the name change. Thanks muchly, Willow (talk) 16:57, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rabi. I notice you've moved Tangent lines to circles to Tangent Lines to Circles. Wikipedia actually has a convention about that, described at WP:Naming conventions (capitalization): words apart from the first word and proper nouns are not capitalized. So I'm going to move it back.
Wikipedia can seem a bit of a strange place sometimes, so below is belated welcome message with links which help to explain the way Wikipedia is. Geometry guy 08:21, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem! Geometry guy 19:13, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
PS. I moved your thread back over here to keep the discussion together. Editors have lots of different views on whether/when it is better to reply on the same page, or the other user's page. Amazingly, this almost never causes disagreements. We just live and let live a bit! Geometry guy 19:13, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
