Welcome to Wikipedia, QuincyBoatMan! Thank you for your contributions. I am Beeblebrox and I have been editing Wikipedia for some time, so if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. You can also check out Wikipedia:Questions or type {{help me}} at the bottom of this page. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Also, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); that will automatically produce your username and the date. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Beeblebrox (talk) 22:41, 22 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tip about my signature. I didn't see your note when I was fumbling around 2 days ago. QuincyBoatMan (talk) 04:05, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of interest editing edit

  Hello, QuincyBoatMan. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Cliff Padgett, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID). Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi QuincyBoatMan. I have added the above template to your user talk page based on what I read in your post at the Wikipedia Teahouse. I am adding this just for reference because I think it's relevant to your situtation and the template contains link to pages which you might find helpful. Based upon your personal connection to Pagget, you do have a conflict of interest as defined by Wikipedia. Does this mean you can never edit the article again? No, but it does mean you need to be careful when doing so. I suggest you also take a look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for some more general information. COI editing is not something expressly prohibited by Wikipedia, but it is something highly discouraged; therefore, it a good idea to understand what the Wikipedia community expects from such editors.
I also think you should take a look at Wikipedia:Ownership of content. Articles are neither "owned" per se by those who create them nor the subjects they are written about. Techinically, your grandfather does not have a Wikipedia page, but rather a Wikipedia article written about him. It's a subtle distinction perhaps, but an important one to understand when it comes to Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:41, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking the time to share all the info, Marchjuly. I have a lot of home work to do this weekend. QuincyBoatMan (talk) 02:36, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Minor Edits edit

Try not to tag something "minor" unless it is fixing a small spelling error, a tiny grammatical problem, etc. Taking out a full piece of references is never what is called a "minor" edit around here.

Many, many thanks for your work getting more references for CP. Anmccaff (talk) 21:40, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I don't think I deleted any references that I hadn't tried to post myself. I'm just trying to figure out how this whole Wiki thing works. Did I inadvertently delete something else that someone else had posted? If so, Argh. And Sorry. QuincyBoatMan (talk) 03:35, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Anything other than what is listed in WP:MINOR should not be marked as such. Since you have a COI with respect to the Padgett article, I would suggest not even marking a minor edit as "minor" since technically minor edits are the only ones considered acceptable for you to make to that article. Marking minor edits as minor when they are not is not going to get you banned from editing; it's not really appropriate, but you should be OK unless you really go off the deep end and start marking every edit as a minor edit. In general, it's probably good practice for beginners to just avoid tagging any edits as minor until they get a better feel for how Wikipedia works. As for figuring out how Wikipedia works, you should take the Wikipedia Adventure. It's interactive, so you learn while doing. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:40, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Marchjuly, lesson learned about 'minor' editing. And thanks for the link to Wikipedia Adventure. When I get home from work, I'll definitely take the 'tour'. That would have probably saved a lot of time & unnecessary wrong turns and dead ends. QuincyBoatMan (talk) 13:48, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
