The Magician's Nephew

Hello there, good of you to do some copy editing on the above article which is of great value to increasing its caliber. I think however, it might be worth revisiting the edits made to produce the following paragraph, even if just as an exercise:

"It frequently makes use of humour; this perhaps reflects the sense of looking back at an earlier part of the century with affection, and Lewis as a middle aged man recalling his childhood during the time when the book is set. Humorous exchanges also take place between Narnian animals."

This would be perfect, but it looses the detail about the good old days and school, which is implicit in your edit, but pretty much explicit in the actual book and rather more so in the published reference the passage is based on. Have a look here and see if you agree:

Pkharmat issue

Dear Queenmomcat, Thank you heartily for you edits on Pkharmat page. I just want to inform you that there is a little mistake maybe. Maybe its done by the reason of low quality of old text. Anyway, Turpal is a free being as you know, in your edit you mentioned that Pkharmat captured it. Maybe I misunderstand because I'm not good on english, if "Pkharmat captured Turpal" means that after this Turpal lost its freedom than we have a mistake. Turpal came on his own will to help Pkharmat and was free after this event however Pkharmat was banished for his disobidience by god of thunders Sela. reverted the use of pled back to pleaded

I reverted you change of pleaded to pled in List of Bosnian genocide prosecutions. I had never seen pled before! But on looking it up in an online dictionary it seems that it is a US and Scottish term. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. Sounds great! Except macwhiz dropped a gocereviewed tag on it because of BLP sourcing issues on this article.

For me, I usually dive into a slow read of the article, tossing in commas or fixing comma splices and changing things to active voice. If there is major work to do rewriting it, I'll take a step back from the copyediting and fix those things and then go back. The problem is that by that point, I've gotten too close to the content to be able to focus on the mechanics alone, so it takes another pair of eyes (at least) to polish it up. Of course, that process could work the other way around. :)

Also, I was just thinking - maybe you could target those pages with the copyedit-section tag - the section in need of work is likely short and your brief attention might actually complete all that the article needs, in terms of stylistic or mechanical corrections. Just a thought...

Finally, a quick glance through some copyeditors' user pages indicates that there are at least a handful of librarians interested in this sort of work on Wikipedia - that's pretty cool, but I'm curious - how did you get started or what motivates you to continue helping out?

(shrugs) So I move on to the myriad other articles that need work, and come back if/when the tag's removed. Thank you for the advice; I do see a lot of articles that I think need work (tagged thus or not) and have always been shy about just diving in and correcting them. (It took me two years before writing my own first article.) Why did I start? probably for much the same reason that the other librarians did: I looked something up for a patron, and the article was riddled with typographical and grammatical errors; I thought "I could do better than that!"

Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close. Stats Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated. Images on Amb (princely state)

Dear Queenmomcat, thank you for correcting spelling mistakes on Amb (princely state) page. The problem with your edits is that, now the images cannot be viewed because you changed the file name of 3 images. I know they contain spelling mistakes but the files were uploaded that way, think of way to correct the spellings and view the images as well. Premature copyedit template removal

Thanks for all your copyediting work. Unfortunately, an article from which you recently removed the "copyedit" template — Mahwelereng — still had a good number of spelling and grammatical errors remaining after your visit, enough that I think your removal of the "copyedit" template was rather hasty. There's absolutely no problem in doing partial/quick copyedits, of course! But if you remove the copyedit template, please first be quite thorough in your inspection of the article and do make sure the need for copyediting has been largely taken care of. Thanks! In this case, I restored the template and did some follow-up edits of my own. Again, thanks for all your hard work. Glawackus Doubt

Hi, I'm a Spanish user who is editing Glawackus in the Spanish wikipedia.

In the article appears an English expression "when World War II was in the wings", that I can't translate.

I've seen that you has contributed to this article. Could you tell me the date on which the quote has spoken or the translation into Spanish of that expression? Thanks Paladium1 (talk) 09:56, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

It's not a particularly common expression in English either, don't worry there! I don't know when the quote was said/printed, but the figurative meaning of "in the wings" in the quote in Glawackus is "about to happen"; the literal meaning comes from stage productions, during which the performers about to appear on stage would be waiting "in the wings", or just off stage out of sight of the audience. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something similar in Spanish. Does this help?

In fairness, WWII already was "ongoing" in Europe at the time; U.S. involvement just hadn't begun yet. As for "caught on", it's another colloquial expression, meaning something like "became widely accepted", but that makes for a rather stiff translation. How about "The name appeared, as if by magic."?

The doggerel is a bit harder (for me anyway!) to translate; it's in "poetic" rather than standard English--prosaically it means "The brave hunters unhesitatingly trailed the terrifying beast's trail through thickets. Hmm. Let me think about this... Queenmomcat (talk) 12:40, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. GOCE Drive – Final push

Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year.
