Hi. I noticed you had worked on the California Academy of Sciences earlier, after it popped up on the 'broken' DOI cleanup list. Looking at the diff, I think you accidentally pasted the name of the journal into the DOI field. It's not a problem, and I've actually been going over all of the cites and filling them out completely now, and organizing the ones to the museums site into a less confusing style (there were three citations to different pages of the museums site in one sentence of the lead). I was been able to plow through at least some of the pile of warning flags. If you look at the history, it hasn't gotten any focused attention for a long time.

Since I saw you had worked on it a bit, though, I was hoping you intended to keep doing so. It's an interesting place, and the article needs a lot of work. The biggest thing is rewriting the article's first paragraph....it reads like the 'California Academy of Sciences' is a museum, which it's patently not....it's a learned society that runs a huge museum. :) The article in't bad, but it's not really in the right 'style' for WP, and that's why it has all the 'warning flags'.

Unfortunately, if you look at the edit history, this article hasn't gotten any real attention for years...people tweaking things, but not spending the time to 'fix' it. It really looks like it has enough information and sources to be a much better article with some editing and rewriting.

I just wanted to let you know, I'm going to finish cleaning up the existing citations as much as I can now, like formatting them right and seeing what I can verify cites for. I don't really write myself, but I'll flag it for a copy edit when I'm done.

Anyhow, welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you keep contributing, and have fun doing it. If you'd like to get some help at any point, even with just pointing out 'problem' articles, a good place to drop in is the Teahouse. If you just want to talk back to me, just reply to this by adding your own comment to the bottom here, and it'll pop up on my watchlist. Either way, make sure to sign anything you write on a 'talk' page with four tildes. Thanks! Revent (talk) 10:31, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Thank you for following up on my typo in the name of the journal I cited. Being new to WP, I even had to fumble about to figure out how to respond to your helpful commments, so I hope this works. Broadly, yes, I could contribute a lot to the Cal Academy page, having worked on and written about Academy history for over 15 years now, and I would enjoy making those changes and improving the Academy's page. Kind regards. ProfMJB (talk) 13:47, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello again, In addition to the previous PDF that I (sort of) linked to, I was also hoping to link at the same footnote to this second PDF: http://sonoma.edu/geology/JAMES_BoatBayMuseum.pdf I did fix the original link a bit, as clicking on the blue text opened another article in the same journal. Broken photo filename

edit

Your edits to California Academy of Sciences (CAS) were helpful, but you inadvertently broke the filename of a photo, causing an error. Please take care not to change the filenames of references to Wikimedia Commons files, even if some of them are grossly misspelled. It is possible to correct the filenames at the source, but this must be done with care to avoid breaking references from all the articles that may use a given photo. I encourage you to continue work on the CAS article, as it has much room for improvement. I have edited the articles on the Exploratorium and Frank Oppenheimer a fair amount, but know less about the CAS, so I look forward to seeing the improvements here. Cheers! Sorry about the broken filename of the photo, my bad, still learning, always willing to learn more. For the CAS, I have a book coming out with Oxford University Press on the history of the Cal Academy, so I would be glad to contribute more to the Academy article. (not sure what to do with the 4 tildes...)

I gather one puts the 4 tildes right after typing their name. Forgot to sign in above, but have now. Kind regards, Matthew JamesProfMJB (talk) 03:35, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
