I got a notice from Ellin Beltz about proposed deletions of photos on my new entry about the sculptor August Zeller.

I am a direct descendent of the sculptor and have inherited the images. I am also a newbie here.

I've made a lot of additions to your article on August Zeller, and tried to prune things down a bit when they got repetitive. I've added images of the sculptures I could find in old, PD (Public Domain), sources.

My understanding about Wikipedia's legal position is that a simple photograph of a 2-dimensional work -- a drawing or painting -- does not constitute a new artistic contribution and therefore is not copyrightable. That generally does NOT go for photographs of sculpture, where the photographer's lighting or angle of the shot may constitute a new artistic contribution. Therefore the clock on the image becoming PD resets to 70 years after the death of the photographer, rather than after the death of the sculptor. You may have hurt feelings about the images you uploaded being deleted—I would have when I started editing here—but I hope you understand the administrators were just trying to protect Wikipedia and Wiki-Commons.

I started the article on Edward Maene, and would appreciate any information you might have about the Last Supper bas relief at Church of the Holy Nativity, Rockledge. My assumption is that Maene's contribution was the reredos above and around the relief, but who was initially given the commission and how they wound up collaborating is cloudy.

I hope you haven't given up on Wikipedia. I find great satisfaction in sharing my passions here.

@Lockley and Carptrash: Do you guys have anything about August Zeller? I come to him thru Edward Maene, but he was also a student of Thomas Eakins and August Rodin.

Hi @BoringHistoryGuy: -- not much. The article is ahead of us. We had a possible co-credit for the Greece and Rome figures on the U.S. Custom House in NYC either under or beside Frank Edwin Elwell, and the seated figure of Colorado on the states' colonnade at the 1904 Fair in St. Louis as shown at right. Somewhere there's a credit on the latter for August Zeller Jr. We didn't know about him at the Quadrangle at UPenn. (But we do now!) --Lockley (talk) 02:08, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

@Lockley: Thanks for looking. According to Poppadough's chronology, Zeller was back in Philadelphia (from France and Rodin) when the Penn Law School and the Quad's Memorial Tower went up, so he again might have been part of Maene's sculpture team. IMO, the finest piece of architectural sculpture at Penn is the Seal of PA headboard atop the Provost's Tower (1912) of the Quad. Zeller was in Pittsburgh by then, which makes his participation less likely, but still possible. I wish Edward Maene's business records were available.
