Prime Ministers

edit

Re this edit and others: you have made a large number of edits, such as saying that Margaret Thatcher was the 72nd Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, without providing a reliable source. I don't doubt that this may be true, but it must have a source.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 11:59, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I question the relevance and the accuracy of the information. It is far from clear who was the first prime minister, and so it is far from clear who was the 72nd. Besides, these numbers do not tell us anything useful. Surtsicna (talk) 12:08, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's more usually found with US Presidents, eg Donald Trump is described in the infobox as the 45th President of the United States, which isn't controversial. There seems to have been an attempt to do something similar with UK Prime Ministers, but they are not usually described in this way and there may be original research here.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:28, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
There is no lack of certainty about the identities or terms of American presidents but there is considerable doubt over British prime ministers and there is no official numbering system so to try and introduce one is definitely original research. For what it's worth, Johnson is probably the 55th person to hold the office (which was itself unofficial until the 1900s), but not definitely so, and that number doesn't take into account the non-consecutive terms of Gladstone, Baldwin, Churchill, Wilson and others. I agree that the numbers are not at all useful. No Great Shaker (talk) 19:34, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Here in the US, with a much shorter history than that of the UK, we do count Presidents, and make use of the number fairly often in all sorts of official and unofficial ways. We also have a settled way of dealing with Grover Cleveland's non-consecutive terms - I don't know who decided it, but no one argues that Cleveland wasn't the 22nd and 24th President. Other polities don't seem to do that, even Germany, where Bismarck's status as the first Chancellor is (as far as I know) uncontested, and it's easy enough to count from there.
As for "usefullness", I dunno, we're human, we like to count things. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:37, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
