The Last Question

Coming from an agricultural background, we know these things. We have to be careful in feeding the goat in winter.

Also from the Gospels, when Our Lord spoke the parables re the sheep and goats, the shephard would send in the goats first then the sheep to pasture, as they eat different things, and goats don't tend to churn up the soil with their hoofs. In very hot countries the sheep and goats have to be brought to fertile pasture and then to the well for watering.

In the evolutionary ladder, goats and sheep are perhaps the widest apart. You have only to look at the difference of their eyes! If a goat eats something you have handled it will either spit it out or get sick. Perhaps there is a site in Wikipedia for animal husbandry that can throw light on this.

The article in question has been deliberately written in a humorous manner by the editors. It is not a serious attempt at an article, more like a deliberate parody of a Wikipedia article. The "sources" are invented and the idea that any article that makes a claim that "Currently the 42ers are negotiating with Latrobe City for the naming rights of the new court, with 42ers Stadium and Fort 42 the preferred options at this stage" is laughable. I repeat, this article is a parody of a Wikipedia article, and a rather well done one at that. Your failure to understand that is mind-boggling. -- Mattinbgn\^talk 11:04, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Almost without a doubt a parody. I have an advantage in being able to spot it as I too played in a (championship winning!) B-grade amateur basketball competition in another town in Victoria, Australia and as such I know that there is no way the local paper would provide any coverage at all to the team (other than in a table of scores towards the back). Even in our championship match, the "crowd" consisted of wives and girlfriends and the municipal authorities would never have considered naming a stadium after a bunch of amateur sportsman more interested in a beer after the game than any glory! I mean, is it really plausible that the City of Latrobe would name their municipal stadium after these guys!

It isn't quite a hoax as I am sure the team exists but the claims to notability are invented and the supposed "sources" ingeniously provided to look plausible on first glance. Meh.. I guess it could be. The way I've been maintaining it is to just keep it to simple common English words, and try to avoid plurals that are duplicates, ie. they both go to the same page.

Hmm. Thanks for pointing me to that; obviously there's still a few areas of the MoS which I've not read. I've noticed though that that guideline isn't very consistent as I've come across many cases where the article title follows capitalisation that the subject defines as their 'official' name (that sometimes being a lower-case first letter, in which case {{lowercase title}} is used) and noone makes any huff about this part of the MoS. On second thought, MOSTM addresses this as well. "The following guidelines represent a consensus that compromises between the preferred treatment of a trademark owner and the rules of standard written English... Hehe, well after reading your userpage I noticed your contributions and saw that you haven't got it yet and were very deserving of it. I totally support your commitment to cleaning out the Category:Cleanup by month backlog, otherwise it will just grow and grow beyond manageability. I have always believed that now that Wikipedia has enough quantity of articles, equal and sufficient effort must be made to improve the quality of existing articles and help remove these unsightly tags. They go ignored far too often by too many editors and to find someone that takes the time to do at least one cleanup a month is refreshing and leads me to re-dedicate my commitment to this project. Plus as you can probably tell from the recent posts above I was in a very giving mood that day. :)

I was correct; apparently you navigated to this user page of mine. I guess I'm a bit embarrassed because it would be very easy to interpret the creation of that page as being a deliberate ploy to be given exactly such a Barnstar as you have given me. But that really wasn't what it was for; it was for what I said on the page it was for—just a personal record of work of which I'm proud. Anyway, thanks for looking at it, and I'll now be sure to redouble my efforts. My goal from here on out will be to try to do two cleanups a month, so as to be truly deserving of your kind gesture. Cleanup Project

BTW, what do you think about the idea of reviving Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce but focusing it on just Category:Cleanup by month? One idea might be to assign one or two articles per month to a participating editors' "desk" for them to work on for that month. This might help with cleaning out the backlog. The most recent attempt at revival it seems is here but without much success. -- œ^™ 00:14, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

I was unaware of the one-time existence of this project. I'm definitely interested in something like this. Here's some thoughts right off the top of my head.

• Membership would ideally be conditional, with conditions such as:

1. Agreeing to a statement that, to this particular editor, article cleanup was their primary mission on Wikipedia. This would keep the unenthusiastic from signing up; I've seen many projects whose memberships consist of people who seem to want only to have another userbox on their user page. Or maybe there could be two types of members; the hardcore who are devoted to cleaning up, and the moral supporters who might occasionally take on something they are interested in doing.
2. Each member-editor would be required to have an article on their plate at all times, posted somewhere in their user space. I would like him to have a goal of when his or her work on the article would be done posted as well.
3. Members would be told at the outset that this would be no priesthood, meaning

• There are no life-long committments; anyone should feel free to drop out whenever it no longer floats their boat to participate, and
• Members should not feel like anything they're doing gives them any special privileges regarding articles. WP:OWN not only still applies, but we should be grateful for anyone that comes along to help

• I also like the idea of keeping a list of articles that have been cleaned up, in a central location in Wikispace. And the tag on the talk page of the cleaned up articles is a great idea.
• No one would assign pages to an editor; each editor would pick his current project from Category:Cleanup by month, from any month or year he wished. This would be necessary to have enthusiastic participation.
• I would like to have a new name of the project. What? I don't know.
• BIG COMPLICATED IDEA: I would like to have some kind of a grid (I don't know if it would be on the article talk page, or a separate cleanup page for the article (which it looks like they may have done before) which would evaluate the state of the article in several key areas, perhaps like the following:

1. Formatting (Sectioning, reflists, etc.)
2. Quality of prose (including reducing lists within non-list articles)
3. Documentation/Sourcing
4. General aesthetic appeal
5. Lead section

The reason for this multi-faceted evaluation is that oftentimes an editor is particularly comfortable with one area of cleanup, but not others, and he may be unable or unwilling to do it all himself. For example, I put a phenomenonal amount of work into Dikir barat (close to eight hours), but part of the reason why it was so difficult for me was that it had been listed as needing sources, and I was (and still am) very inexperienced in properly formatting references into an article. I would have loved to have had a partner in that effort.

Okay, well that's all I can think of now. Looking back at it, I think my expectations may seem somewhat arrogant. That's not my intention, and I hope you'll tell me honestly what you think of these ideas. Unschool 05:00, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

I think these are excellent ideas! and I did not get an impression of arrogance at all but rather of competence and an enthusiasm towards a worthy vision. If you would take the lead in kick-starting this new project I would support it ancillarily in whatever way I can, as just like a theoreticist vs. an engineer, I'm good with ideas, but actually creating the framework is something I'm not good at. :) I am good at formatting references though so I can help out that way. You are certainly free to do so, but from my perspective I think I want to have something more solid to present before we try to recruit. I want to write up an essay and a project page with a framework before "going public". This is a wiki, so I respect that it will only get better with additional help—however, I am hoping that a more-complete plan will a) engender more enthusisasm and optimism (as you note, it has already failed twice), and b) have a better prospect of surviving; I am going to be gone soon for over a week, and I'd like to be able to participate daily as it evolves. Practical Joke

Dear OIEnglish,

I attempted to place, on the main site, an item entitled: Piltdown Man.

This is now well tabulated, and perhaps in the Western world is the most famous practical joke, which remained hidden until only recently.

However, as I was placing it on it was deleated, so I gave up. Yet, this serious study would be, I believe, of value, even if it is only a cross referance to the site: Piltdown Man or to the professors involved and the journalists involved.

At the time of the discovery this became a massive news item and hugely contraversial until recently, when the professors had died the families said it was meant to be a practical joke, but could not be named as such as it had gone too far.

Why ask for serious study references on the page, when as soon as someone attempts, it is deleated????

It opens up the Missing link Theory, and study on it.

The nearest thing to this was the discovery of "Lucy" in Ethiopia in the eighties, and "the ice man" in the ninties.

Sorry, I did'nt make myself clear. Would there be any point in putting in on the site piltdown man some additions or entries to take account for the new outcomes, etc.? Or would that be deleated too, irregardles? Hence, there would'nt be any point.

Frank Dux

I agree the POV pushing has been fairly extreme. I don't believe that a well-sourced and documented "Controversy" section should be completely removed b/c of it. Simply but, Dux is a controversial figure and the article should reflect that. Certainly, NPOV sanitation is required, but outright deletion is excessive. I am re-instating that section, but I do invite you condense and edit the section for POV. Djma12 ^(talk) 13:57, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I invite OLEnglish and Risker to actually explain their whole-scale deletions to this article. WP:BLP is not simply catch-phrase, I think you need to justify HOW the article actually violates this when there is a long-standing section that has numerous reliable sources per WP:RS. Deleting a sourced "Controversy" section was never the intent of WP:BLP, especially when the only objections to the section came from sock-puppet attacks.

I looked all around tyring to find someone who had experience here.

i am TOTALLY lost !!! lol Wanted to start info about a family biz called the cool easy, about CoolEasyPost.com Its a new biz online, jut launching although have been online for couple of years on other things and working with that site for over a year now. Well before anything else, please be mindful of what Wikipedia is not. It's definately not a place for advertising or promotion of your company. If you wish to go ahead and create your article, it must meet Wikipedia's policies. First, notability, is it worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia? Then, is it verifiable? Can you find reliable third party sources that reference your business? Also, be mindful that if it is YOUR family business then YOU writing about it would be in a conflict of interest which is no-no. Your best option would be to submit your article at articles for creation. You should also ask at the Wikipedia:New contributors' help page for any further questions. Also read WP:Your first article.
