Articles you create edit

Hello Nlu, have you some where a list of all article you created ? Yug 16:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

No, actually. I didn't keep track, and it seems a little late to start. :-) --Nlu (talk) 16:32, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks for this answer ;) Yug 17:44, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
By the way, I currently in possession of 60 pages (unauthorized photocopy made by a French student when nobody was watching  ) of the Cambridge History of China : it's all about Tang Taizong Reign ^0^y ! Accordingly, I made some good expansions in the French Taizong's article, both by reading the CHofChina and your article. I noticed 2 things :
  • The CHofChina make some interesting analysis, some times according to recent researchs, which should greatly interest you : If you can, find this book in a librairy ! (~100 pages of comments about Taizong alone, and 2 volumes and about 1200 pages for Sui + all the Tang.)
  • I was astonished to see that, despite the fact that the CHofChina is "The history of China in ~12.000 pages !!!", you provided more explainations than them on Tang Taizong campaigns against the Tufan, agains the Tuyuhun, Goguryo etc than them !! O.O !!!!!!! I'm totally astonished by the details and quality of CHofChina, I was death for 3 hours when I realized you made even more.
I just wanted to notice it... Yug 18:00, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
:-) Thanks for letting me know. I probably have a Cambridge History of China somewhere, and it does provide insight, particularly with a modern look, but that last time I looked, I remembered that I was not happy with some of its inaccuracies and lack of details. I probably have to dig it out of one of my boxes.  :-) --Nlu (talk) 19:13, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was by example thinking about Taizong early role. Our both articles said "When Sui collapsed, Li Shimin encouraged his father to revolt", but the CHofChina clearly doubt of this statement from official Tang historians, and, according to an other sources recently enlighted, the CHofChina is incline to say that Taizong was just one of several major generals, and did nothing more than Li Jiancheng, the former heir, and that Taizong is hightly suspected to have change official reccords to his advantage. The CHofChina seem make clear that official reccord underestimate Tang Gaozu and Li Jiancheng, and over-enlight Taizong merits. Both my french article and your English article aren't that clear and audacious enough on this point. Same lack of "update" for Britannica entry (I was astonished to see that they just have 40 lines about Taizong O.O).
I still have to finish my (2nd ? 3rd ? 4th ?) reading to find where I seen this recent but perfectly credible theory, when I will find the page, our 2 biographies of Tang Taizong will have to be correct accordingly.
Also, Since you seems to work mainy with Official histories reccords (Tang shu ; Xin Tang shu ; etc.), I think the CHofC's analyses may be really helpful.
For the lack of details : for sure ! By reading the Official histories reccords you make the same job that the CHofC autors !! By looking at it, you will simply find opinions of... "classmates" O.O. That can give "3D" to your works, that's always interesting. Yug 19:38, 19 April 2008 (UTC) PS: hungry to read more of your articles !
Agreed -- and to the extent possible, I had tried to add more into Li Jiancheng's article. Li Yuanji, though, might be the one who actually got truly overlooked, but there is simply not enough material on him. --Nlu (talk) 19:39, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the article, really nice. ;) Yug 06:50, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Article Sui dynasty

You (I think) wrote :

In 588 AD, the Sui had amassed 18,000 troops along the northern bank of the Yangtze River, stretching from Sichuan to the Pacific Ocean . The Chen Dynasty was meanwhile collapsing, and could not withstand such an assault. [Ebrey, Walthall, Palais, (2000). East Asia: A Cultural, Social, and Political History. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. Page 89.]

The Chen dynasty could not withstand such an assault of only 18,000 soldiers ?. O.o Yug 14:17, 21 April 2008 (UTC) (I presume it's 180.000 ? right)

I did not write this, and, to be honest, I would never cite an one-volume general history not in Chinese for this kind of a proposition, as I've come to the conclusion that nearly all such relatively short general histories don't get their details right. According to the Zizhi Tongjian, vol. 176, incidentally, the Sui strength was 518,000, which could have easily led to the confusion above. --Nlu (talk) 06:26, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

New Project edit

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:47, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tone of this one edit

Hello, for the Kaohsiung Incident article, you might want to fix the tone the way you prefer it. A lot of the wording is taking exactly as is from sources. Benjwong (talk) 23:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I may, when I have time. I'll see. The problem is that the tone is, as it stands, not encyclopedic and not NPOV. --Nlu (talk) 05:31, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Song Dynasty empresses edit

Hello. I've noticed that you've created many of the sub-categories for the main Category:Chinese empresses. If you ever wind up creating the category for Song Dynasty empresses or even articles for them, then there is a wealth of pictures for Song Dynasty empresses over at WikiMedia Commons: click here. The same goes for empresses of the Ming Dynasty. Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 04:28, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know. Yes, I do eventually plan to venture into Song Dynasty articles, although I am a little concerned about my ability to write those articles effectively given that I have no access to a good modern Chinese source for Song history, but I'll see. --Nlu (talk) 04:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is it because you primarily use the Zizhi Tongjian? Which of course, would not cover Song history or anything after it. Also, there are portraits for every Yuan Dynasty empress and emperor over at Wikimedia Commons, same for the Qing Dynasty. It's a shame that there's only so many portrait paintings to have survived from the Tang era, many of them from the Thirteen Emperors scroll by Yan Liben.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:31, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
It is because, yeah, I use the Zizhi Tongjian as a key source (not the only source), and also, as a result, I have done more reading in other sources for the periods covered by the Zizhi Tongjian. When I get there I'll see if I'll be out of my elements. Thanks for reminding me about the pictures and the such. --Nlu (talk) 19:57, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ask MER-C for RFA edit

I dont know what your reaction was when you read the heading but you nomming him last time im sure your the one to kickstart it, for IF anyone can entice him to go for admin i assume its you. I know from his talk page that he has very worrying views about going to RFA again, you can see that here. It just makes me so angry to see him doing all this remarkeable stuff that he hasn't got the mop and bucket just kills me. I can understand his reservations for the RFA process, it can be an absolute hell hole from his last RFA but that was over 1 yr ago. What do you think? You would think all those users who opposed would have pulled their heads in by now. Just your thoughts, thanks Roadrunnerz45 (talk 2 me) 12:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Checking need for Fanyang edit

Hello Nlu, I have some doubt about the statement : “Fanyang (city) = Youzhou 幽 (???)”. For me, a is a county or a commandery (?), but clearly not a city. If you know the right answer, you are welcome ! 220.135.4.212 (talk) 16:16, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The thing is, in Tang Dynasty, there are two levels of prefecture-level jurisdictions: special municipalities and prefectures. When prefecture (州) is converted into a municipality (府), it changes its name from one character to two, so whenever You Prefecture is a special municipality (only briefly at times during Tang Dynasty), it is known as Fanyang Municipality. When that is not the case, you are right that "Fanyang" would only refer to the seat of You Prefecture.
However, also remember that Fanyang can also refer to the military circuit (道) -- in which case it refers to a considerably larger area than just You Prefecture; it would also include all other nearby prefectures. (The circuit was later renamed to Lulong Circuit.)
I hope that this is helpful. --Nlu (talk) 01:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks. It's still a bit confusing, but I will try to put this clearly in my mind. Yug = 220.135.4.212 (talk) 13:42, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Other Khitan issue edit

Hello Nlu, I made a Portal:Khitan to organize all Khitan-relate article. I face to the 2 categories : Category:Khitans and Category:Khitan history.

For me, since Khitans are an extinct people, they are obsviously part of the world history. Also, Category:Khitans and Category:Khitan_history should be merge.

From what you know on Wikipedia usages :

  • do you agree with this merge ?
  • under which name should I merge them ?

Yug = 220.135.4.212 (talk) 13:42, 26 May 2008 (UTC) (PS: please also take a look at the [newly expanded] introduction of An Lushan)Reply

I think I am not completely opposed to a merge, but I have some reservations about it. I tend to think that there could be a parent category (named either way) with a subcategory of Category:Khitan people. If you want to propose a merge, a WP:CFD should be filed, incidentally. I would probably not take a position on it other than commenting as above. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. --Nlu (talk) 16:54, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

An Lushan Military promotions and Tang's military ranks

Hello Nlu, I made a summary table on the article An Lushan about An's rise. I'm a little confuse with military ranks in Tang China, since I found 2 or 3 translations possibles for each Chinese rank.

By example, when I use

* pre-740 : officer of the Pinglu Army 平盧軍, translator
* 740: Bingmashi (兵馬使, commander) of Pinglu Army
* 741 : Xu: Governor-general = Nlu: "commandant" , at Ying Prefecture = at Yingzhou,
*:commander of Pinglu Army
* 742 : Xu: regional commander of Pinglu = nlu: "military governor", "province governors" of Pinglu (jiedushi), since Pinglu is promote military circuit;
* 744 : regional commander of Fanyang
* 751 : regional commander of Hedong
* 756 : Emperor Yan (death in 757)

This need an uniformisation.

FIRST: I think that :

  • « X was promote Fanyang Jiedushi (Regional governor) »

such as Pinyin (place + title) + (Hanzi, English) is the best format to use.

SECOND: it is need to clearify the translation to uses.

  • ?? => officier (before)
  • Bingmashi => ?? (740?)
  • Jiedushi => ?? (742, 744, 751)
  • ?? => Governor-general (741)

Actually, I think we should use conditionnal templates based on Pinyin such as (template + in-article display):

{Jiedushi|0} => Jiedushi in very short mode
{Jiedushi|1} => Jiedushi (Military governor) in short mode
{Jiedushi|2} => Jiedushi (t:節度使, s:节度使, Military governor) in full display

Yug 14:52, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

This for each chinese rank

Well, I had a discussion on this in WP:NC-ZH a while ago, with no real input from others. If you wish to modify what I had there, I wouldn't mind if you create a new talk discussion on it. --Nlu (talk) 03:51, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
