Wikipedia 1.0

Thanks for signing on for the review team! As you guessed, right now the main work that needs to be done is to review articles carefully so we can get a good number of important, quality article on the test CD. Version 0.5 nominations is certainly getting a lot of articles listed, I'd really appreciate your help in clearing the backlog. I notice you list biology and medicine as interests- well, those two articles in fact need reviewing! Seriously, any help would be most welcome.

Other work looming is on Work via Wikiprojects, we are about to start contacting all of the projects once more. We now have a bot which is using talk page categorisation to help automate listing of articles, see the test listing summary. We hope to get more projects using this system for tracking/assessing their articles, so we at WP1.0 can easily keep track of 20,000 articles without getting swamped!

Incidentally, I visited Hungary in 1994 with my wife (then new girlfriend, the trip still has happy memories for us). We taught English at a camp near Lake Balaton, lots of fun. I felt like Budapest was a place I could enjoy living in. Thanks and welcome to WP1.0, Walkerma 18:21, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

New Idea for 0.5 Version Nominations reviewing

Med portal

If you look very carefully, you'll see that some portion of the area around thumbnails is a different color than the background of the portal boxes. To see more vividly what is happening, look here. The background outside the thumbnail boxes should all look gray, but because of the thumbnail problem, the background it mottled. Thus, we avoid thumbnails in portals, unless the background color (generally specified in the box-header subpage) is "transparent".--ragesoss 19:43, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad to see someone taking charge of that portal. You probably won't get support for featuring the Medicine portal until either you've developed a several month track-record of updates, or you put future content on an automatic rotation and create several months worth in advance. If you've got the time and enthusiasm now, you should implement a CURRENTWEEK-based system for the article and picture. Whichever route you pick, good luck!--ragesoss 20:00, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Take a look at the system on Portal:Trains. The content for the selected article is "{{/Featured article/Week {{CURRENTWEEK}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}". The CURRENTWEEK and CURRENTYEAR templates produce the relevent numbers, so it ends up as "/Featured article/Week 18, 2024". Then you just create many of the future weekly pages, and it will rotate them automatically, and the archive page leads to the list of all the weeks. It's a bit tedious getting it set up, but the result is nice.--ragesoss 14:22, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm referring to giving the source of the picture in text below it, so that readers can see it without clicking through to the image description page (see the picture sections on Portal:War, Portal:Aviation, Portal:Australia, etc. for examples). The number has been steadily rising over the past year. Anything below 1000 edits will basically fail for that reason alone; I would wait until you have 2000–3000 edits, to make sure the issue isn't brought up. On the other hand, you do have substantial experience outside en:, so people might ignore a lower edit count. Kirill Lokshin 15:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

In fact, we at the Work via Wikiprojects group is now beginning its "second round" of contacting of WikiProjects, beginning with the Arts, Literature and Language projects (they were done first in the 1st round). If you want to help out with that, see the list of WikiProjects for an overview and the Arts tables for more details. For details of plans for round 2 see here, and a typical posting is listed here. If you are only interested in contacting the Science projects, let me know and I'll alert you when we start on that (probably in early July). Portal:Medicine

Hi there,

how are the exams going? I've had 2 until now, with 4 to go, so I won't be helping out with the portal much, except for today . I listed myself as a maintainer in the portal directory, so as of now I guess we are working together on this.

Here's what I did just now, thought I might inform you so we agree and don't do double work.

• I've transferred the formatting changes by cj to the subsequent week article.
• I've created "Nominations" pages for the selected articles and archives. Saw it on Portal:Food, and I now how I felt at first about editing a portal, so it might lower the threshold for interaction, I hope. There are also archives for discussions in the future.
• I moved the "did you know archive" from "Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Medicine/Did you know Archive" to "Portal:Medicine/Did you know archive"
• I've made some changes to the selected picture archive and selected article archive.
• Created new "did you knows", and prepared keratoconus for selected article in week 26.

• I've redesigned the categories, thought cuberjunkie made good suggestions.
• I've added nephrology and NHS wikiprojects.
• For me it wasn't necessary you used the nominations procedure for the selected article... I think of it more as a means of other people being able to contact us.
• I've created a template for ex-DYK articles, and a category for them. Pick one of the articles and check out the template.

Szervusz! I am interested in a wide variety of topics, so it's hard to say...I studied the Habsburg Empire in university, so I can perhaps contribute there...I am also very interested in business/economics/finance topics (I think good explanations of many economics topics is hard to find)...I would also like to help counter the systemic bias of Wikipedia (which is why I try to avoid editing only United States-related articles)....and, in addition, I like writing about organizations/companies/agencies...so, it's a pretty wide list of things I'm interested in...any suggestions are appreciated! I LOVED Hungary

Hello, Bertalan. I loved my time in Hungary. I spent one month in Budapest getting my certificate to teach english as a foriegn language at a small school called Tudomany Nyelvisokola in the Buda section of the city across from the northern part of Margit Island. I wish I could have stayed longer. I will definately visit the city again some time in the future. I lived with a very nice Hungarian couple during my stay. The man, Nagy, owned a small aeroplane and gave me a tour of the entire country by air! Great fun, but a bit frightening! :) As for what I would like regarding the featured article director position, it is not up to me, but up to consensus. In my opinion, though, there should be a 4 person committee appointed for a set term of a year or two with the committee chaired by one of its members on a rotating basis every 6 months. If this is not workable, perhaps the FA director could remain as a one person position with a term limit of one year. Tourette and genetic project

Hi, NC. Thanks for the note. I hesitated to sign my name to the project, as I have no medical background, and feel I won't be able to contribute much beyond the TS article. What do you think? Also, I've still got a major chunk of the TS article to write (under screening/prevention, I plan to add all of the issues of screening for comorbid conditions, cover more info about the comorbids, and indicate "preventative" aspects leading towards better prognosis). Portals

Hi & thanks for the suggestions :) The right side was originally longer, with 2 pictures but then it was decided that we'll have only 1 selected picture, not 2. It looks better now. I added an Associated Wikimedia box, but it is pathetically small, as we have no pages in Wikinews or Wikiquote and I could add only 2 links.

what is a wikiproject exactly?

By examples do you mean that I should put there some ugly red links for articles which no one will ever feel like writing? :-)

I couldn't figure out what this currentyear/day system is, does it have something to do with archives? I haven't even thought of archiving yet (though I tried to indicate updates in the page history so that they'll be easier to find later).

Any ideas and help would be welcomed since I still absolutely don't know anything about portals :D

ours is still a small portal and there aren't too many contributors... we don't have any műhelys and now, and in the early life of the portal it'll be enough to update twice a month, I think... maybe later we'll update it weekly if we have enough contributors :) – Alensha 寫 词 14:35, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Medical Genetics Project

I'm not frustrated or disillusioned or have any problems with the medical genetics project. I'm simply a genetic statistician in a non-medical atmosphere. The way you are going is just fine for medical geneticists (like the title suggests!). I'm more of a human geneticist. I'm sorry if I caused a problem, I just felt that my interests are different from the medical aspects of human genetics (For example, I have over a dozen human genetics texts on my shelf but only one on medical genetics — and old 1973 textbook by Thompson and Thompson, and zero on medicine). Genetics cleanup

Per your request, I have created Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Genetics and plugged it into Wikipedia:WikiProject Medical Genetics/Open Tasks. It's just been updated by Pearle, and should in the future every few weeks or so. There is a place to add the genetics Portal if and when it is launched; if you do that, it will be automatically scanned to help find more genetics articles in need of attention.
