Re: Xenosapien

You'd never say "I have a vinyl" or anything like that, the closest you come is "I have Xenosapien on vinyl". So it would be "record" or "records". I found this out from wiktionary: [1], after someone told me the same thing after I used "vinyls"!

By the way, I've seen your name on a number of articles I also watch/edit, you do good work! MrMoustacheMM (talk) 04:43, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Kid Rock

Hello. I'm guessing that your first comment on Kid Rock's talk page will also be your only one since you have stated that you, "don't usually deal with musicians who have the popularity of Kid Rock." I have one simple question: why do you find the subject skeptical? There are numerous sources linking him to the style. RG (talk) 15:58, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Actually the link is to a book listed in the reference section right above the "Inline" portion of the article, not a different page. One of them is Rock & Roll: A Social History (the book and specifically the section citing Kid Rock as nu metal can be seen in this google books link.) The other book listed in the reference section is Ian Christe's Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal. The third source was from Marcus Reeves and a book which User:Blackmetalbaz claimed was 100 percent reliable(which too can be viewed on google books.) I also found a ref from MTV citing him in the field. Regardless I don't want to worry you about a subject that you have little interest in. Take care. RG (talk) 05:09, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Misanthrope

I know all this about www.metal-archives.com but the Misanthrope's website was unavailable at the time. It still is and that's also why the cover picture is not included. If you go see the first album I added, Libertine Humiliations, the reference is the band's website. But I actually have these albums so the links are just procedural... Wanna Barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. Homework2 TalkWhat I do! 03:23, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

I signed up for that program; thank you for telling me about it. However, I do not know if I have that {{subst:js|User:Dr_pda/prosesize.js}} code implemented correctly. I tried to implant it on two subpages created for the purpose of this code, but I really don't know if I am doing it right. Check out User:Backtable/vector.js and User:Backtable/vector.css if you can help; thanks again. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 05:19, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can muster to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. Once again, thanks for your support! Swami Krishnananda

Dear Backtable,

I am the principle author of the Swami Krishnananda page. Thank you for your recent edit to "Influence" section of that page. Your rephrasing of the closing sentence of the section makes sense. I just made two minor edits to your work, the reason for which being that I believe an "Influence" section of a biographical article should emphasize the individual's accomplishments.

I replaced "the" with "this" before the word "institution," to emphasize the significance of the the Divine Life Society. And I slipped in "many" before "works of theological and philosophical literature." Swami Krishnananda was indeed a very prolific author, and I do not feel that use of the word "many" is out of place in the influence section of the article.

I am glad to see that you are interested in religion and philosophy. Do you know much about Swami Krishnananda or Swami Sivananda?

Regards,

Advedom (talk) 02:18, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Dear Backtable,

I noticed that you expressed concern at the Religion Discussion Board about some of the phrasing in the Swami Krishnananda article and thought you might be interested in reading this letter that I recently wrote to user Goethean, who has expressed similar concerns. The Swami Krishnananda article was my first Wikipedia effort, so I am still in the process of familiarizing myself with all of the site’s polices.

You are not alone. Most of the lay public has not heard of Krishnananda or Sivananda. Sad. They were tantamount to Plato and Aristotle. They also happened to be fully Self-realized God-men. If you are interested in learning more about religion and philosophy from an excellent source, these men are a great place to start. Several of Krishnananda's books in PDF format are linked to the article; all of his work is available free of charge in PDF format.

Advedom (talk) 04:22, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Dear Goethean,

Though my collaborators and I did spearhead the Swami Krishnananda page, including writing all of its content and doing all associated research thus far, we by no means wish to claim ownership of the article. We are fully aware of the open and collaborative nature of Wikipedia, and are more than willing to work with other editors in this capacity to improve the page. However, we are quite knowledgeable about Krishnananda and his work, and it may be helpful if we could maintain a leadership position on the project until it fully complies with Wikipedia policy. Either way, we intend to comply with that policy.

One of the missions of the institution that Swami Krishnananda ran for more than 40 years—the Divine Life Society—is the free dissemination of spiritual, religious, and philosophical literature. In accordance with that mission, Krishnananda did not promote nor profit monetarily from his writing or teaching. Therefore, Krishnananda’s work is not known much to the lay public. It has been challenging for us, then, to find impartial viewpoints about him outside of a relatively small, albeit highly respected, academic community, some of the makeup of which includes Dr. Stephen Phillips, Dr. Clooney, Dr. Grayling, and Dr. Pintchman—the professors cited as references in the article. According to one of our researchers, these professors have used Krishnananda's work in their lecturing, and do in fact assert that he was a significant 20th century theologian and philosopher. This assertion is testified further by Krishnananda’s extensive body of work, which speaks for itself, and by consensus among serious theologians and philosophers.

Essentially the article consists of three phases: biographical, academic, and contextual. The sources for the work in the first two phases have been cited amply with references to biographical information on Krishnananda published at Swami-Krishnananda.org, by Krishnananda’s own scholarly work, and by a few sources relating to the defining of key terms and concepts. Over half of the citations in the article correspond to these sources. The other phase of the article is “contextual,”—that is, related to the perspective with which the reader will view Swami Krishnananda. This phase of the article consists of the 13 assertions connected with the contested university professor references. Without these assertions, by virtue that Krishnananda is not well-known outside of religious and academic circles, the lay reader will have difficulty in fully appreciating the scope and scale of Krishnananda’s life and work, and therefore may not take the time to read the article in its entirety. For this reason, it is important to us that these assertions, which I can assure you are accurate, remain in the article.

With the exception of a few over-generalized correlations of statements in regards to Krishnananda’s work and Swami-Krishnananda.org, which I will soon correct, the only references in the article that remain unacceptable as per Wikipedia policy are the aforementioned which correspond to Dr. Stephen Phillips, Dr. Clooney, Dr. Grayling, and Dr. Pintchman. I will work diligently to get in touch with these individuals in an effort to obtain copies of their published material—course materials, syllabi, and work in academic journals—in which they have referred favorably to Swami Krishnananda and his work. I could provide quotations of theirs to such effect immediately, but as I understand it, this would be deemed by Wikipedia as “original research.” These professors are very busy people, so it may take some time for me to obtain copies of, or find online locations for, their published comments as regards Swami Krishnananda and his work. If I am unable to locate this material in a timely fashion, perhaps you and I can collaborate to find sources elsewhere which can attest to the validity of the 13 assertions made in the “contextual” phase of the article.

Unfortunately, religion is under attack today. The reasons for this are rooted in ignorance. However, the study of a man like Swami Krishnananda, who had an unblemished record, who lived a life of admirable self-discipline, who selflessly served millions of people, and who left behind an ocean of knowledge, all in the name of religion, can replace this ignorance with an understanding of what the ancient science is really about.

Om,

Advedom (talk) 04:22, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Dear Backtable,
I am glad you found the letter interesting. I appreciated your concerns and wanted you to understand my point of view.
Thank you for your kind words; they mean a lot coming from an editor as experienced as yourself. I marvel at the fact that you are still in high school. You are obviously a very intelligent and thoughtful young person. It's good to know they still exist! We commend you on all of your hard work at Wikipedia. Very impressive! You obviously have a great passion for and understanding of the music art form. My favorite era of music is the 1980s; beautiful, angelic stuff. Beyond that, I would go back to Orbison, Holly, Perkins, Dion and the Belmonts, Richard, Berry, etc. And of course classical music. I have been listening to Handel's "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" lately.
You are in for a treat studying Swami Krishnananda and Swami Sivananda. You can become very well-rounded in philosophy especially, by reading Krishnananda's work, as he not only expounded the Vedanta, but also much of Western philosophy. The page that we created for him is an excellent introduction to his work. From there, I would recommend his book The Realization of the Absolute and Swami Sivananda's Thought Power, both of which are available for free PDF download. In the "External Links" section of the article you will find several links to videos of Krishnananda lecturing. What was amazing about Krishnananda is that all of his lectures were delivered extempore, that is, without any kind of preparation. The complexity of the subjects he spoke on notwithstanding, you will note that he uses no texts and speaks with perfect grammar without using pause utterances of any kind. I have never heard of anyone who could do that.
Keep up all the excellent work:)
Advedom (talk) 02:37, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
It is pretty incredible. Even our top orators--Lincoln, JFK, FDR, Churchill, King, etc.--relied on texts. Krishnananda's 1987 speech The Purpose of the Advent of Swami Sivananda--a video link to which is provided in the article--is an exemplifcation of his skill as an orator. Advedom (talk) 05:04, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
PS -- Cheers on your 3CD set of Handel's Messiah opera. That is a nice present to receive. Baroque is my favorite classical style. Advedom (talk) 05:10, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

That is cool. I have some questions, though. I remember that I managed an article before this drive began, in June. It was a copy-edit-tagged article that was like that since February 2008. Would that count towards this drive or not? I may or may not have questions for you later on, but that is something I am wondering for now. Thanks. Speedy deletion nomination of Markus Staiger

A tag has been placed on Markus Staiger requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

I'd just started some tidying up on the pages on some of his albums, one of which was going to be culling all those reviews on that page, only to find you beat me to it by a day. I'd noticed it a while ago but hadn't got round to it. An IP editor has been adding lots of reviews and "best of the 90s" list links to most of the ES album pages, leaving them all a bit unwieldy in different ways, and silently reverting even efforts to properly format some of his additions for him. We're going to need all the help we can muster to reduce the backlog to a manageable size. We've set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog, and getting the total under 5000. To do that, we're going to need more participants. Please invite anyone you can to join the drive! Once again, thanks for your support! If you have any questions, contact one of our coordinators—ɳorɑfʈ Talk!, The Raptor You rang?, or SMasters (Talk).

Wikify Drive

Since you signed up for the September 2010 GOCE event, I wanted to invite you to participate in a similar event: the September 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive. In case you didn't know, "Wikification" is the process of formatting articles using Wiki markup (as opposed to plain text or HTML) and adding internal links to material. Barnstars will be awarded to participating editors. Thanks!

User:Backtable/Name/Secret page

Hi, Backtable. In a July/August 2010 policy discussion (at Wikipedia talk:What Wikipedia is not/Archive 34#Does WP:NOTMYSPACE apply to secret pages?), community consensus was that the policy Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not prohibits secret pages. Would you tag the page User:Backtable/Name/Secret page with {{db-userreq}}? Thank you, Cunard (talk) 08:22, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

October drive

Sorry, guys. The wikification drive has been bumped to October. You might have noticed already, however. I'm amazed how many people came on as soon as I sent out the invite. With a few more, we can easily meet our goal. Just remember. Concentrate your firepower on the 2008 articles, and you should have no problems. Great work! Also, if you have time, please also invite other users to participate. Thanks!

GOCE newsletter

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

GOCE copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!
