baseball stats

Hey, when you update the stats for baseball players, could you please update the date also so others will know when the stats were last updated. Spanneraol (talk) 19:21, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Im sorry but I am fairly new to wikipedia as of January 2012, and I dont think blocking is neccisary... I will do what you ask but I dont know how to put the dates on a seperate page...

Well Im sorry for posting all of the right stats on your page. Also sorry for being new and reliable to wikipedia, your stats are out of date most of the time and need updating so well, thats what I do... I know I dont put a date everytime or at all but honestly I have no idea how to do it... Thanks for the block anyway. Well when you have messages, a "you have messages" think appears that is very hard to miss.. and you could always ask other editors for help. Anyways, the date field is right above the stat fields you were updating. Spanneraol (talk) 12:51, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Updating the date

It's unfortunate that it had to reach the level of a block, and it's good to know that you apparently weren't trying to be stubborn. When updating the stats, which are often out-of-date as you say, you are using an interface that looks like this:

| statyear = July 29, 2012 | stat1label = Batting average | stat1value = .233 | stat2label = Home runs | stat2value = 150 | stat3label = Runs batted in | stat3value = 635

All you need to do to update the date is to change the date in the statyear field to the date for the previous day. The reason we use the previous day is that the statistics will likely be correct through that day, not the present day. If you wish to request that the block be lifted, feel free to do so. At any rate, your block was actually a short one, so you should be able to resume editing without more trouble quite soon. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask on your talk page. Actually, I live in the Eastern Time Zone. The block was not in my time, but in UTC, which I believe is in England or something like that. Times on Wikipedia are based on UTC. AutomaticStrikeout 17:32, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Of course, anyway, do you personally own either the Astros or Rangers pages because if you do, I would like to know how I could get a hold of a few of them, since they are my favorite. Actually, nobody owns any of the articles. There is a policy regarding that. If you want to update the stats on a page or make edits to it, you don't need to get anyone's permission. If you want to put a page on your watchlist, you can click the star at the top of the page near the search window. AutomaticStrikeout 01:48, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

The watchlist will help you keep track of changes to the articles that you have listed. It will show you the most recent change to each page on your watchlist, provided that change has come within the time frame selected (perhaps the last 3 days). AutomaticStrikeout 02:38, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

I mainly watch pages I have created and umpire-related pages to try and prevent somebody from coming and posting a bunch of vandalism since they are mad at some umpire. The umpires task force was a mini-project I started up to try and improve the umpire related articles (a lot of them were/are in quite bad shape). As for the achievements, it takes time. It also takes practice. I'd encourage you to get experience in areas besides updating stats. And don't be afraid to ask when you're not sure what to do. AutomaticStrikeout 02:56, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

I would recommend gaining plenty of experience in working on existing articles before you try creating your own. Take a close look at how the articles are designed, how references are handled, things like that. It can seem very complex sometimes. I see. However, I don't think that means that you can't continue to update stats and learn more about how to become a good editor. You might want to take things slowly, learning a little here and there, and that's fine. There is plenty of work to do in updating stats and you can be a help in that regard. If I or you was to post our email here, everyone would see it. That would make you even more visible. I wouldn't worry too much about visibility, just don't give out a bunch of personal information. Yes, it was informative to learn that you were only 13, as that can explain if you have a hard time grasping some aspects of Wikipedia, but there's really not much else you need to say about yourself. Honestly I think I can grasp the aspects of Wikipedia decently well just would take a little time and explaining from someone who knows what they are talking about, and you seem to be a person of trust. You may find this hard to believe, but you've actually been editing on Wikipedia longer than I have. There is still plenty of stuff I don't understand, so there may be some questions I don't know the answer to. But I'll still try to help where I can. You can learn a lot about the aspects of Wikipedia just by reading through the pages linked above in the section headed "Welcome!" I'm saying that if you want to be a really good editor, you'll find those links I've mentioned helpful in learning about editing. Something else that might help

So when I was trying to add something to a page it didnt add because I think I didnt put a reference. But the thing is, I dont know where to put the reference. First of all, I think your edits to Ryan Dempster were slightly modified and the one to Soto was removed because it was determined that his debut was not worthy of a mention in the article. However, your edits did get made, and not having a reference won't prevent an edit from happening. It is, however, still good to use sources. As for the images, what articles did you have in mind? I'm not very experienced with images actually (it's confusing to me too) but I do know that you can't add just any image to an article. I don't really know how a lot of that works, but for the articles you are thinking of there may not be a better image available. AutomaticStrikeout 19:01, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Well I am not trying to add one necissarily but change it. I get a little frustrated seeing the first picture not being of them in their current team, so I would be willing to try to find a good picture of them in their current teams uniform. Mnap25 (talk) 19:28, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that one of them in the current team's uniform may not be available. A picture has to meet certain requirements and I'm honestly not knowledgeable enough about that to explain it all to you. Maybe the best thing would be to ask at the Teahouse. Tell them your concern and try to find out what pictures can be used and what ones can't. You may have to wait a little bit for an answer, but you'll likely hear from someone who knows what he or she is talking about. AutomaticStrikeout 19:34, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

No problem. Looks to me like the updates have stayed so far. You can always check your contributions and check to make sure that your edit was the most recent one. If it was, it will say "(top)" next to the edit. Of course, just because someone edited the page after you doesn't mean they undid your edit. AutomaticStrikeout 19:47, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

You can choose to "hide" posts to your talk page. You can essentially delete anything you want from your talk page (the text would still be visible should someone want to look at your talk page history, but that wouldn't be too common of a thing for fellow editors to care about). Check the talk page guidelines out here. I choose to let all comments, both positive and negative, remain on my talk page until an archive date comes around, but you may wish to remove comments that would be considered vandalism or comments where you might've divulged a bit more than you might have liked.
