Please help me with...

After editing, I notice that the references and the numbers don't line up correctly. For example, a sentence ends with a [2] and it should now be a [3]. How do I refresh or control the numbers that correspond with the reflist? I am using in-line citations and it seems to create the numbers automatically, but after edits it does not line up anymore. Thank you.

Micahwill (talk) 19:20, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that (in Draft:James Veltmeyer (Physician)), you manually added numbers to the end of sentences, as well as a numbered list of sources in the References section. What you should do is put the source in between <ref></ref> tags, at the end of the relevant sentence, like this: Dr. Veltmeyer is currently a candidate for Congress in California’s 52nd District, challenging incumbent Scott Peters.<ref>[https://timesofsandiego.com/politics/2017/08/21/surgeon-james-veltmeyer-challenging-rep-peters-3rd-republican-in-race/ "Surgeon James Veltmeyer Challenging Rep. Peters; 3rd Republican in Race"], Times of San Diego, August 21, 2017.</ref>; that way the numbering will be handled automatically. Actually, no, I DID NOT add the numbers manually. I put the references in brackets [like this] and the numbers were automatically generated by the system. Problem is, when I make edits, the numbers don't line up anymore. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). tags, at the end of the relevant sentence, like this: Dr. Veltmeyer is currently a candidate for Congress in California’s 52nd District, challenging incumbent Scott Peters.[1]; that way the numbering will be handled automatically. Micahwill (talk) 14:59, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

That's because if you enter a URL between single square brackets (like this: [https://example.com]) it will display a numbered external link. These numbers are sequential on the page, and bear no relationship to the list of references. For this reason, adding external links as references in the text isn't the way to add citations. Instead, follow benzband's advice above, or check out this simple introduction to see how to do it correctly. Yunshui  15:27, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
