possible resolution to VIAF conflict edit

Maximilian -- It was a pleasure to talk with you at Wikimania. I believe I've made my first useful edits to Wikidata, based on the VIAF-conflict list. I discovered and undid some unhelpful edits to d:Q40649. Could you take a glance at the diff to verify my judgment made sense?

More interestingly, there are two VIAFs in this case, but viaf.org maps them to the same location. I'm guessing the other URL pointed to a maiden name. Since now there seems to be just one location, should I update wikidata and the various Wikipediae to use that one location only? -- Econterms (talk) 15:22, 17 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Econterms:, What's happening here is that as more libraries become added to VIAF the cluster shift and rearrange and grow more nodes. Sometimes that means that an record will shift its ID. In that case a redirect will be left behind. So you're right the ID 29255645, just redirects to the other one.
As for your reversions, I think you're right, the aliases and descriptions belong there. Thanks for helping out! It was good meeting you too at Wikimania Maximilianklein (talk) 03:47, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:VIAF/errors edit

Hi Max, are the errors listed on Wikipedia:VIAF/errors processed by OCLC? The oldest entries were posted almost one year ago. --тнояsтеn 20:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Thgoiter: Yes! They go in the processing queue, which is being constanly worked on. Also, the corrections that were made on articles that aren't even being reported on that page are being noticed. Thanks for following up. Maximilianklein (talk) 16:20, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Is it possible to mark/strike the resolved issues in the list? --тнояsтеn 16:51, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Thgoiter: I'll check. Maximilianklein (talk) 16:53, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. At the moment it looks like the list is growing and growing but nothing is happening in the background. --тнояsтеn 17:07, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Authority control edit

Hi Max, are you still Wikipedian in Residence for OCLC? I've gone through the authority control at Wikidata. It seems that a lot of the numbers are already outdated. Four questions:

  1. Is it possible for VIAFbot to add belated the date of import?
    1. You mean as a qualifier statement? I could give an approximate date probably.
  2. Is it possible to delete all GND, type n ("undifferentiated")? (Meanwhile the German Wikipedia has gone rid of most of them.)
    1. So this task is to delete all the P107 claims with a certain value? Aren't all P107 claims going to be deleted anyway?
  3. Are there plans to export all authority data from enWP to WD and delete these numbers at enWP? Perhaps there should be a new template called "Authority control WD" without the possibility to add new numbers at enWP.
    1. The Authority Control Template on English Wikipedia, already "falls back" on Wikidata. So if there is no local data specified it will get the Wikidata data. Try it, just delete a VIAF on enwiki and it will get the WD. I suppose we should then try and delete the local data so the German corrections will be integrated.
  4. When will OCLC start to use Wikidata?
    1. That's on my priority list. VIAF will start to watch WD and not enWP in about 3 months I would say (but I can't promise).

Cheers --Kolja21 (talk) 18:45, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

13.900 VIAF redirects have been corrected @ deWP: see here. --Kolja21 (talk) 19:36, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Kolja21: I'm not sure google translate is getting this right, but it seems like deWP want to make corrections to deWP and not WD. I think we both need to commit to using WD to make this work, and I will try and convince enWP to do that. Maximilianklein (talk) 16:56, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you've got it right. The corrections are only made on deWP. Imho deWP authority control will join as the last to WD. Since GND type (P107) is going to be deleted the templates of de, no, plWP and some other languages, that are based on GND type, can migrate only partially on WD. But it would be a great step if enWP would go ahead. --Kolja21 (talk) 22:33, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help test better mass message delivery edit

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:19, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
