Article Proposal

{{helpme}} Hi Max, I have found an anthropological article that is missing crucial information in regards of a battle for intellectual property copyrights that the Hopi and Apache tribes fought to obtain from American Museums indigenous intellectual property.

Is this an appropriate submission for the course? My resource is in The Volume 39, Number 2, April 1998 Current Anthropology by the University of Chicago and the title is Can Culture Be Copyrighted?

Online Ambassador selection process

Please share you views on the current version of the proposed Online Ambassador selection process, which the steering committee has recommended for adoption by the ambassadors program. Creating subpages

Here's the mini-lesson that I wasn't able to give you on Sunday.

As you know, you can create subpages (or sandboxes) off of any project page or your user page. What makes it a sandbox is simply that it has a backslash /, and these pages do not need to adhere to any WP:MOS requirements.

To add any number of subpages on to your already existing class project hub, simply create a new link on the project page's main page. Do not create a link off of a talk page because then it will forever have to have talk as part of the page name and it will make it confusing. You want the subpages to go directly from the main page of whatever project (or class) you're working on. So on your page WP:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Politics of Piracy (Max Klein and Patrick Berger) create a red link that's something like [[Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Politics of Piracy (Max Klein and Patrick Berger)/Assignments]] or [[Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Politics of Piracy (Max Klein and Patrick Berger)/Blog]], etc. These will then link off into their own subpages. You can create subpages off of these subpages as well. Once you add the link, go back to the main page like you normally would and click on the red link in order to create the page.

(I feel like the course article name is extremely long and should have a shortcut like [[WP:USPP/Politics of Piracy/2011]] or something, which then redirects to your main page. ... don't do this if it confuses you though : ). I don't know how strict they are in the USPP project about shortcuts. You may want to ask Sage. I just can't imagine constantly having to type and navigate that huge long name (Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Politics of Piracy (Max Klein and Patrick Berger)) every time you have to go to or create a new subpage ).

Thanks for the quick feedback Sage. This came out of a discussion in the Campus Ambassador training this weekend regarding encouraging students to work within Wikipedia as much as possible and to centralize discussion on the class project's talk page and various subpages. One thing we want to do (either having mentors, or students themselves do it), is to add links from their userpages to the course page, the course talk page, and the talk pages of their mentor and campus ambassadors, as well as a link straight to the #wikipedia-en-classroom channel on IRC. Wikimania

Hi Maximilianklein,
I don't think we've been in contact yet, my name is Amy, I'm the researcher for the Public Policy Initiative. Your topic for Wikimania sounds really good. Do you want to possibly merge presentations for Wikimania? I have a presentation that has been very well-received at other conferences about teaching with Wikipedia; it has student videos and some interactive activities. The Initiative staff (myself included) think it would be great to team up with other project participants if possible at Wikimania. So let me know if you are interested.
Also, the submissions for WikiSym are due tomorrow and I was thinking of a topic similar to yours for a workshop - something like "lessons from the classroom: creating a wiki assignment that works". Were you planning on submitting to WikiSym? would you be interested in co-presenting? I will be busy working on that submission on Monday. Hello Amy, I'd be very interested in merging presentations for Wikimania. I hadn't heard much about WikiSym yet. If I'm in the States I would like to co-present there as well. Due to the fact that the initial experimentation of using projectspace to run a class is still ongoing I don't have a complete presentation at the moment. That means I probably will not have anything ready for WikiSym by tomorrow, but maybe there is a way to incorporate the ideas I'm purporting. My topic of conducting assignments in projectspace is a subtopic of yours so perhaps I could be a bullet point for you.
As for Wikimania do you know of any space that campus ambassadors or PPI involved staff are using to begin collaboration for Wikimania presentation or perhaps we should start one. Maximilianklein (talk) 07:18, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Children's Museum Update

Hey Max, just thought you'd appreciate, so tagging this onto your talk page as well!
I wanted to give you an update on the Children's Museum Wikipedia collaboration. You can check out my brief overview in the Children's Museum blog, which includes details on the Apprentice Program project to create five new Wikipedia articles as well as the image donation and use of the new Wikipedia Widget to link the museum's website to Wikipedia.

Last month we completed our first museum image content donation of 30 images. While this seems to be a low number, what makes the donation unique is the curatorial involvement in choosing and vetting the images for their appropriateness and usefulness within Wikimedia (many of the objects are copyrighted toys and other works that have copyright restrictions.) The curators in the collections department were very hands-on in their involvement, and we'll be outlining this process in an upcoming case study. If you would like to help further this process, I'd be happy for you to help disperse the images into useful Wikipedia articles, or let the appropriate WikiProjects know of the new images. Another 30 will be uploaded in the coming month.

In addition to the collaboration with the Museum Apprentice Program students and the curatorial department, another important collaboration was between User:Ealdgyth and the American Collections curators to significantly update the Broad Ripple Park Carousel article. After an impressive amount of time and work, the article has now received Featured Article status. The museum is absolutely thrilled and will now be adding a QR code to the carousel exhibit Carousel: Wishes and Dreams. In the future, more QR codes will be added to the objects that have had articles written by the MAP students. We're excited by the success of this collaboration & will also be writing a case study on the process.

Response Paper

Hey Max, I wasn't sure where to submit this, so I'm just gonna post it here. I posted it on my discussion page as well. Thanks for everything. -Jens

I have taken two other decals at UC Berkeley during my enrollment here and I must say that this one has topped the other two in terms of applicable knowledge and learned skills. I had never made an edit to a Wikipedia article before and, after taking this class, I now confidently feel as if I can be a valuable contributor to the organization and I plan on continuing to edit articles from this point forward. I signed up for the class hoping to learn about piracy and I did, however I also I ended up learning much more about how to be a good Wikipedia editor. It was incredibly easy to get in contact with an online ambassador and he (“Alan the Roving Ambassador”) was very helpful in getting me acquainted with Wikipedia policies and procedures. I don’t know what happened to the groups we formed, but I chose to edit the articles on Mitch Bainwol, chairman and CEO of the RIAA, and Cary Sherman, President of the RIAA, because I felt they were each relevant to the class and they were both stubs at the beginning of the semester. As much as I wanted to badmouth each of them and add a subtle little detail that might attack their reputations in some way, I chose to remain neutral on every aspect and tried to maintain an unbiased tone when adding information. I learned more about these two figures, why people see them as “evil” and how one could consider them to be just two people doing their jobs as well as they can. In the end, this class was very insightful on the use of Wikipedia and the effect of piracy on the entertainment industry and I would recommend it to anyone interested in either or both of the two topics. Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Campus Ambassador program in the Netherlands??

Hi Max, I am a board member of Wikimedia Netherlands, and I received a forwarded mail from Lodewijk regarding interest in the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador's program in the Netherlands. Apparently you know of someone who wants to start a group in Rotterdam. Wikimedia Netherlands is a bit overloaded at the moment with projects and we don't have any (known) volunteers interested specifically in this, but if the educational program in Rotterdam uses an English curriculum I suppose they could just use the Campus Ambassador's materials on this wiki. Can you let me know in a nutshell whether this is feasible? Otherwise we'll just file it under "projects for 2012 to discuss at the next members meeting". Hello Jane, I think what you propose is a feasible idea. Although maybe in size you've overestimated the demand. Just one professors wants to participate, and they could use most of the English resources. The only one thing they would not have is some short ~15 minute in class tutorials from a Campus Ambassador that classes usually receive. So really the only volunteer need would be 1 person to give a few short lessons, and also be available by email or phone to answer the professor's questions. To emphasise we really would only need one Dutch Wikimedian to for about 3 hours per week. Even if that's not possible then we can of course use the Online Ambassadors as much as possible. Being Gentler to Newbies

I was being gentle. Thats why the pages didn't end up with AFD notices slapped on them. Thats also related why I ended up spending over an hour on IRC trying to solve one of the student's issues. But hey if you feel that there weren't enough kittens involved in the process I'm sure you can find someone to write a bot to add them. In the meantime my interaction with the students was via a handful of templates and via IRC which I don't think you have logs of.

At least one of the traditional points of such courses is that the students are meant to get some idea of what wikipedia is like. And for most new users wikipedia is clinical. Which is what the students got from me (other than the IRC stuff). If you don't like this feel free to join any one of the many failed attempts to address the issue.

As for your statement that ""I think the students could do with a little more guidance." is an unfair and uncalled for judgement on his teaching skills." it fails on a number of levels.

Firstly there is no actual judgment of teaching skills in there. I don't know about which educational systems you've had dealings with but all the ones I've run across have found time to be finite. Guidance takes time. Thus students needing more of it can just be an issue of there not being enough time.

Secondly the alternatives aren't an improvement. The choice of titles was universally poor or worse. Now there are only a handful of ways of explaining this:

  • The students are incompetent (statistically unlikely given the 100% failure rate and inconsistent with my interactions with the students)
  • The lecture is incompetent (unlikely I understand that the even the universities in the former colonies have some standards)
  • The students simply aren't interested (possible but inconsistent with those I interacted with)
  • There wasn't enough guidance (consistent with all available evidence)

In the end if poorly supervised students start interacting with wikipedia they are going to sooner or later run into the regulars who will deal with them as is. Attacking those regulars won't change that other than to make sure that the only ones prepared to deal with students are either the burned out patrollers who simply don't care or the extreme personalities who don't care about you.

You might want to know that I (and an entire group of people) spent over an hour in IRC-help helping an editor who was associated with that particular issue and that this editor was very happy when they signed off. They received innumerable helps, instruction and links in-channel and also on their talkpage. Did you have an issue with this? I thought it was a clear and concise statement of the situation, I posted what had happened as I wanted to let the instructor and the various ambassadors know that there might be multiple misunderstandings about the class' assignments on the part of the students. If I were the instructor or one of the ambassadors, I would want to be informed. The Online Ambassador and the instructor both thanked me for my efforts. Comment on citations for science journals

Max, Could you make some kind of comment here? The situation is that perhaps Wikipedia's citation system ought to be reviewed. A major United States-based distributor of scientific literature is considering whether to advocate for online papers to have a system for easy formatting of citations on Wikipedia. There are several issues with this - one is that the current citation system may be worth reforming first, and there is also a question of whether sources used for one article perhaps ought to also be made more easily available for the equivalent article in other languages. Working on OCLC page

Hi Max,

I've been in Alaska for the past week or so, but I'm about to put in a couple of hours working on the OCLC page updates. This is all still very new to me, so I'm going to read through the Article size and Wikifying help pages, probably along with several other help pages, and start making little changes when I feel confident.

I might read about this in a help page in the next hour or so, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway: Should I contact you, or other editors before updating the live page? How much discussion should be done before the edits go live?

There's really not strict protocol. You could make your changes to the live page immediately if you thought they were totally uncontroversial. In this case, I'd post on the talk page, ask some of the other editors of the page, discuss or wait a about a week, and then make edits based on the comments you get.     • Finished most of the core of the phase 2 data model implementation
    • Created abstract storage interface for the repository

Hey Max! Great talk during the Info Access Seminar at the UC Berkeley School of Information!

I had a question too: where is the link from your presentation about citation numbers? I believe it was in your namespace and I'm curious to look if you have any other notes about bibliographic data.

Excited to see the OCLC and VIAFbot projects may touch on bibliographic data, dovetailing with WikiData. And thanks for answering my question about whether you can hold a discussion (with a talk page for example) about a particular citation that is used in multiple articles (perhaps across wikipedias). Let's follow up on this, both in the scope of WikiData's approval, and also on its own as a step closer to WikiData! The concept is parallel to Heather Ford's work on the politics of citations. We had talked about this last summer and we both thought it would be a good idea to build a platform to resolve these issues ASAP.     • Worked on version 2 of generic site handling in MediaWiki incorporating feedback from wikitech and mediawiki.org, as well as updating the WIkibase code to match
    • Rewrote SQLStore to accommodate phase 2 and phase 3 of Wikidata
    • Added maintenance script for rebuilding the store data
    • Implemented action column in user interface. All buttons for user-interaction are now aligned on the right side (for ltr-languages).
    • The language-code is now shown in a separate column in the site-links table
