Sock puppet

Maybe you missed my previous message. Before you go out from wikipedia, will you please desysop your sock puppet Daniel Mayer from es.wiki. Nobody voted that account for sysop. That is not a sock-puppet. It is an account I use for official Wikimedia business, such as editing the sitewide message on es.wiki. --mav

Read this. Of course, asking a local admin (the ambassador if you don't know which one) to update the site notice is, for some reason, out of the question (not official enough?). Or even using your legitimate, relic from the past, sysop account in es.wiki (Maveric149), if you can't trust the locals (!). I wonder if the site notice here is unofficial, since you didn't edit it officially...

I don't understand why you keep trying to justify your behaviour. Don't bypass the rules of the local wikis. Bypass the rules and create sysops only when urgently needed. Desysop them as soon as the need ends. Why do I need to tell you all this? --es:Angus 23:25, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

According to the history of this image, you were the one that added it. It since got flagged as to-be-deleted-unless-copyright-verified, but I found a source that appears to suggest that it's a US government picture, though perhaps if you can remember clear back to 2003 when you put it up, we could nail it down completely. Mav, there is a contributor that owns a record distributing company. She post her webstie as an External link. Is it against Wiki policy to post an external link in an article that will lead you to a site where a person may purchase merchandise of the person who is the object of the mentioned article? It depends on where the external link is placed. If it if placed in an article on her record company, then it is fine. If it is placed somewhere else it may or may not be wrong depending on how relevant that article is to the link. --mav

Wikimedia position

That is something that our legal dept needs to handle. If and when we hire somebody to handle that sort of thing is an open matter. Of more immediate importance is the hiring of another developer and then an experienced executive assistant to take over from Danny Wool so he can concentrate on grant writing (he is currently our interim executive assistant). Single-date articles

Hi Mav. Glad you like the principle of articles on single dates. I think they could add a lot of value to Wikipedia. Here are some points about the articles and if you have any feedback about them I'd be please to hear it.

1. A new right hand sidebar has been added on the "date pages" that links to "this date in recent years". See e.g. February 25.
2. The old look of "month pages" has been maintained through the use of transclusion. See e.g. February 2004. I was trying to work with two conflicting opinions here. Some people are simply resistant to change so I wanted to maintain the traditional way of viewing these pages as much as possible. Others do not like translusion of article namespace pages on principle. I have minimized the problems of such inclusion by making sure the section edit tags all work as well as possible.
3. The current practice of linking to date and year separately e.g. linking to February 14 and then to 2005 borders on the absurd. The whatlinkshere pages for those sorts of articles are now totally useless. The only reason people link is because having links enforces date preferences to work. I've heard from Tim Starling and he says there is no technical reason to demand linking in order to force preferences. Making the relevant changes to the code so that it works for all dates (linked or not) is on his TODO list. With this in mind I would like to start encouraging linking to single dates (beyond some cut-off point - my current thinking is to have January 1, 2000 as a natural cut-off). Then whatlinkshere for those links would start to become useful.
4. One downside is that I have created pages which are only on my watchlist and no-one elses. Although these pages are rarely vandalized, I might start to round up volunteers who will watchlist them to provide extra security.

Yoism VfD from two years ago

Over two years ago, you participated in (and to some degree, oversaw) a VfD re: Yoism. Despite the fact that Yoism has become a more substantial phenomenon in the ensuing period, immediately after the Yoism website had been hacked and before it was restored, the Yoism article was put through a VfD and a bunch of administrators who never looked at the website, had little or no knowledge of Yoism, and apparently refused to investigate and/or even review the VfD of two years earlier outvoted all of the less experienced users who had familiarity with the phenomenon. (Actually, the less experienced users with at least one prior unrelated edit outvoted the administrators but more than half were discounted as sock puppets.) In any case, given your history as an administrator who knows the history, I thought you might be interested in the VfU which is drawing to a close. Kriegman 15:16, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

I remember that you were the first editor from several years back to redirect the list of dictators. So, perhaps you'll be interested in the AfD that is giving me a headache at the moment. Just a hi

Hey Mav: it's me, Antonio Dodger Martin to say hi and let you know Im back.

How are you? I haven't been through many good times lately. I was ordered to undergo rehab by a doctor, possibly hospitalization, because of my Xanax addiction, of which I have very well documented about here. Well, I dodged one bullet today, with the hospitalization deal turned off by my family doctor, at least for now. We are looking at an alternative such as a outpatient treatment. I have been prescribed Xanax to treat muscle pain and concurrent anxiety after the December 2002 concussion I received whole playing Football, another incident that I talked about on my user page.

I haven't been on wikipedia for a looong time, and, at best, sporadically lately. Haven't written a new article in about two months. I don't like many of the new rules that people who came AFTER US, mind you, have voted for. But, Im back. HEHE so yeah I'll be doing some more extra work more frequently.

Well, just wanted to let you know Im back and basically ok. I hope to hear from you soon!

Capitol Reef Geology

Looks very thorough, I like the inotes, hadn't seen them before. I'm not a geology expert so I can't really review what you have done especially with the references. One question, is it Lake Unita or Lake Uinta? I can find references to both but all the current maps show Uinta, I think people often transpose the letters because of the familiarity of Unita over Uinta. Bob Palin 02:43, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Good Articles

You delisted Geology of the Capitol Reef area and listed Wave-particle duality? Have you seen the size difference between the two? One is certainly much more complete than the other and a much better article. The presense of 'too many red links' is an invalid thing to object to even in the FAC process. Why should it matter here? And the article you promoted did not have a single image while the one you delisted has two (I'll be adding many more once I get my Linux drive back up). In response to the above comment you made on my Talk page, I apologize for criticizing one of your articles. I didn't realize that you needed to have fifteen featured articles and nearly 70,000 edits to have an opinion on someone else's article. I also didn't realize that long articles are automatically good articles. As I stated in the comment on the talk page for Geology of the Capitol Reef area, some articles may be able to do without images (such as Wave-particle duality). But clearly (as you pretty much admitted), your article could use some more pictures. I did not delist your article solely because it had a lot of red links. As my opinion is just that, you can always relist your article on the self-nominations page (as you did). If you're not willing to take criticism, why do you even bother to putting your article on the self-nomination page? Just add the good article template onto your articles at free will because obviously anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. joturner 21:53, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Personal appeal header on every page

I've been told that you are responsible for the personal appeal header on every page, so I'm posting this here. Doesn't letting that notice stay after the end of the official fund drive take away much of the point of having a time-limited fund drive? I can put up with that notice during the official fund drives, but having it there all the time detracts from the useability of Wikipedia - especially on small screens. It also seems dishonest to say that the fund drive will last until a set date, and then letting it continue after that, calling it a "personal appeal", when putting it on every page makes it quite clearly official. All fund drives are followed by a thank you note to donors and a link to our CafePress shop. Most of the message will go away in about 10 hours and be replaced by a single right justified personal appeal note from Jimmy Wales. His appeal is still ongoing but the drive is officially over. -- mav

That is not part of the fund drive. It is part of an effort to increase donations between fund drives. We badly need that. --mav

Gettysburg Address

Hi, Maveric. Why is Gettysburg Address semi-protected? The vandalism isn't so rampant that it can't be handled; it looks like there's a few instances of vandalism per hour, all handled quickly because this article is only a lot of users' watchlists. The article is also linked from the Main Page, and generally those pages are not supposed to be semi-protected without discussion and consensus. Could I ask you to please unprotect? Since when has 20 reverts of vandalism in less than one day been acceptable? We must ask ourselves if having the page unprotected against anon and new user edits is worth all the work reverting and all the readers who will be subjected to the vandalism. Having vandalism even a couple minutes on such a high profile and linked page is not acceptable. We are here to build an encyclopedia, not as a social experiment on community development. I also responded to a request for protection by another user. See the talk page. --mav

Twenty reverts of vandalism for the Main Page featured article is par for the course. If you read the policy at Wikipedia:Semi-protection policy, it specifically says that "this includes the day's Featured Article which should almost never be protected." We expect articles linked from the Main Page to receive more vandalism than usual, because so many people hit them from the Main Page. Don't need it? That page keeps on getting hit by anons and new users. VERY little by way of improvement has been done by anons and new users to that page since it was put on the Main Page. The overwhelming effect from them has been negative. Thust they should be locked out. --mav

A serious bot attack is the bar we have for protection now? Have we lost our minds? We need to instead look at the pros vs the cons of soft protecting the page. It is VERY obvious to me that anons and new users were having a HUGELY negative net effect on the edit history and very little of what they did to the article was helpful. Thus protecting is the best action. But I will not wheel war over this. --mav

Gold Standard

I've noticed that the Gold Standard article has become unwieldy, repeats itself, is disjointed, has strong POV one way and another from section to section, is rambling, is poorly referenced, etc... pretty much every problem that can imagined except edit wars. The whole page is in need of a breakdown and rewrite, and others have mentioned this on the talk page.

I would like to start on this, but I feel that without a concerted effort by all who edit the page, it will remain out of hand. Is there a flag that could be added to this page before it is crushed under its own weight?

Geology of Antarctica

As requested by yourself, I have done my best to write a decent geology section for the Antarctica article. I felt that the article was a beautiful piece of work, but I also completely agreed with your objection. Rather than object, I simply wrote something to meet the need. However, I'm a chemist rather than a geologist, and I'd really appreciate it if you could read over my efforts at translating into plain English things like "the structural grain, defined by fold-axis trends, has been disrupted by large-scale block-faulting." Is there a way we can add Norouz to the list of holidays for March 21st to appear on the main page?

I'm surprised it isnt listed there.

Norouz is the traditional new year holiday in Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of India, and among the Kurds. It is also a holiday in Turkey and some Central Asian countries.

After reading your comments at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/AIDS, I wonder if my recent adoption of ref name="" type of referenes is good. Project news An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page. The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain. Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created. An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway. The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.	From the Coordinators Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. help? edit war at kriging & geostatistics

Hi, mav.. I know you're really busy with general WP duties & your 60 hour job. :-(. So, feel free to ignore this if you are too busy or stressed.

I seem to be in the midst of an edit war with User:JanWMerks at kriging and geostatistics. Dr. Merks has his own web site that condemns geostatistics [2] as a scientific fraud.

Given that Dr. Merks is a newcomer, I've been trying to point him to Wikipedia:NPOV, Wikipedia:No original research, and Wikipedia:Verifiability. I'm not sure how much this is helping.

If you'd like to lend a cool viewpoint on the whole dispute, that would be wonderful. Or, given that you've been on the ArbCom, you may be tired of such things: I've also asked User:Antandrus to try to help out, so that may be enough.

Gödel

Just wondering if you could give me your opinion on this:

An Outline of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem and its Proof

(From Rucker, Infinity and the Mind .)., .....

1. Someone introduces Gödel to a UTM, a machine that is supposed to be a Universal Truth Machine, capable of correctly answering any question at all.
2. Gödel asks for the program and the circuit design of the UTM. The program may be complicated, but it can only be finitely long. Call the program P(UTM) for Program of the Universal Truth Machine.
3. Smiling a little, Gödel writes out the following sentence: "The machine constructed on the basis of the program P(UTM) will never say that this sentence is true." Call this sentence G for Gödel. Note that G is equivalent to: "UTM will never say G is true."
4. Now Gödel laughs his high laugh and asks UTM whether G is true or not.
5. If UTM says G is true, then "UTM will never say G is true" is false. If "UTM will never say G is true" is false, then G is false (since G = "UTM will never say G is true"). So if UTM says G is true, then G is in fact false, and UTM has made a false statement. So UTM will never say that G is true, since UTM makes only true statements.
6. We have established that UTM will never say G is true. So "UTM will never say G is true" is in fact a true statement. So G is true (since G = "UTM will never say G is true").
7. "I know a truth that UTM can never utter," Gödel says. "I know that G is true. UTM is not truly universal."

With his great mathematical and logical genius, Gödel was able to find a way (for any given P(UTM)) actually to write down a complicated polynomial equation that has a solution if and only if G is true. So G is not at all some vague or non-mathematical sentence. G is a specific mathematical problem that we know the answer to, even though UTM does not! So UTM does not, and cannot, embody a best and final theory of mathematics ...

Although this theorem can be stated and proved in a rigorously mathematical way, what it seems to say is that rational thought can never penetrate to the final ultimate truth ... But, paradoxically, to understand Gödel's proof is to find a sort of liberation. For many logic students, the final breakthrough to full understanding of the Incompleteness Theorem is practically a conversion experience. This is partly a by-product of the potent mystique Gödel's name carries. But, more profoundly, to understand the essentially labyrinthine nature of the castle is, somehow, to be free of it.

The Incompleteness of Gödel‘s Incompleteness Theorem

The problem with the above construct is that finite time is discrete and effect must follow cause. If G may be either true or false then what is to stop G from being true at one point in time and false at another point in time? Consequently if we ask the UTM whether G is true or false and the UTM says that G is false and G becomes as the result true then the error we have made is in applying the outdated answer to the resulting state of G rather than laboring to ask the question again. If we ask the question again then the UTM will answer that G is true and G will once again change states and become false. The above construct simply points out the discretion of time and that effect follows cause. If we are going to expect a universal answer from a universal truth machine then we must provide it with a universal rather than a discrete question. The result of this understanding is in fact the principle behind the bistable multivibrator or flip-flop. (Computer Circuits for Experimenters by Forest M. What a UTM would most likely say to such a discrete question is that G will be true until UTM answers the question that G is true at which time G will become false and vice versa.

Reminder about Wikipedia official policy

Look, just from reading through your talk page I can see that you are the one who welcomed Cyde and Ilyanep, and even though Cyde and I have had our disagreements, they are both valuable members of the Wikipedia project. What if you had turned them away because you didn't think that Wikipedia was supposed to be a welcoming community? We are not ignorning it. Consultation was done with the MOS guidance in perspective, and decided that in this specific case, it was best not to follow it. It took me 3 minutes to figure out that it was not a copyvio by us but by the other website. Please spend more time researching these things before you place a perfectly good article in a line to deletion. --mav

Possible libel at John Magee (bishop)

Hi Mav

Sorry to bother you with this but I thought I should point it out to someone and only your name came to mind. I was rather concerned about a possibly libellous paragraph in John Magee (bishop) which I have now removed. I know nothing about this gentleman nor do I hold a brief for him but I do know that the para I removed was asking for trouble unless ferociously well supported by documentation.

Please feel free to do with this whatever will best benefit wikipedia in terms of avoiding possible legal risk etc.
