Brian Skerry edit

Can I ask what prompted you to write a biography of Brian Skerry? Are you connected to this person in some way? Kendall-K1 (talk) 18:27, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm working for Brian Skerry Photography. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.10.250.29 (talk) 14:30, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I work for Brian Skerry. His page is not up to date and I wanted to add more recently published books. Minor change and links provided. Margor.88 (talk) 15:04, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

  Hello, Margor.88. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:10, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dear Kendall,

Can you please advise as to the proper way to create content on Wikipedia? We updated the information on Brian Skerry's page so that visitors would have thorough details about this person. I see that you have posted at the top of the page now "A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page." Yes, I have a close connection with the subject, but who else would be able to provide relevant details? Brian Skerry was interviewed in order to have sufficient content for this entry and it would seem to be of interest to those wanting to know more about Brian. Do I understand correctly that if someone completely unfamiliar with Brian Skerry submitted material the warning at the top of the page would not be posted? Also, it seems that some information was removed, such as material about exhibits and awards. I did supply links for some of this material and can send additional links if this would allow the material to be added back to the page. We are simply trying to create accurate and informative content about a person in which others have shown an interest. We are interested in following all proper procedures you set forth, and want to better understand how to do whatever you state must be done in order to have a clean, accurate and informative page about Brian Skerry. But we obviously do not want to have such warnings at the top of the page. If you can help provide the information necessary to create a professional Wikipedia page, I will be grateful. Thank you. I just did advise on how to create content. If the COI guideline and FAQ are not clear, I can try to answer specific questions, or you can ask at WP:COIN. I will also leave a generic welcome message below that has links to more guidance and ways to ask for help. Kendall-K1 (talk) 17:46, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again Kendall. OK, a couple of specific questions: 1. Is it possible for me to provide all of this information in a way that does not present a COI? Or is a COI inherent simply because I am know the subject, regardless of any and all footnotes, links and other reference material? 2 All the information I submitted regarding Brian's awards and exhibitions was removed, even though links were included. Can you please tell me why and if this material can be restored perhaps with additional links to sites that prove these facts? 3. If these things cannot be done, especially removing the banner at the top of the page that indicate a COI, can we simply delete all information? There would seem to be little point in providing this information to WP if it is questioned by WP at the top of the page. Thanks again!Margor.88 (talk) 19:45, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Your COI does not necessarily mean we can't use anything you write. But anything in this or any other article must be verifiable. That means we need to be able to point to some published source where we got the material. Anything you wrote that you got from an interview that has not been published, we can't use. I removed the awards section because they were not sourced to independent reliable sources. You can see this if you look at the page history. I have no objection if you want to revert your additions.
