Wimbledon F.C.

Your latest edit is reasonably fair and neutral, but one item opens another can of worms. You say that the club was "forced" to move out (nobody put a gun to their heads. You'll need to rephrase that slightly). The relevant bit of the detailed section says at the end of the 1990–91 season Wimbledon decided that its cramped Plough Lane ground was beyond redevelopment. Without getting into opinions like "everybody knows that it was worth more as a site for a supermarket" and "Merton Council put impossible conditions in their way", can you find out what really caused the first relocation? --Concrete Cowboy 16:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

AFC Wimbledon

I don't understand why you edited the AFC article to say that the club was originally Old Centrals. There is no legal connection between AFC and Old Centrals. --Concrete Cowboy 17:04, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Firstly, I didn't! Someone else entered that (possibly one of 195.93.21.136; 80.41.8.5; 86.130.22.94; or 86.130.22.94, although I'm not sure which without checking it, see Talk:AFC_Wimbledon#Vandalism.) and I just didn't address it when removing other edits from the page which were posted at a similar time and were actually vandalism.

Secondly, there is no legal connection between Old Centrals and any other clubs bearing the "Wimbledon" name. I believe that the original contributor's inference is that AFC Wimbledon is a continuation of the spirit which formed Old Centrals, which subsequently and independently sustained Wimbledon FC and which now (again independently) sponsors AFC Wimbledon.

Maybe I have misinterpreted the tone of your comment but it sounds like a sarcastic remark inferring that a) I did make the edit in question and b) I lied when I clarified that I didn't. If so I don't appreciate it!

Since you have taken issue with it, I think you will find, upon closer examination of the article's history, that the first occurrance of that text is in Revision of 22:57, 25 August 2006 , which was not by me but by 195.93.21.136.

On the contrary, I was explaining how it was that I came to think that you had done it and that it hadn't occured to me to go back further. It should have. My mistake. No slight intended! (and yes, I think that is how to link to earlier articles).

Note theWikipedia:Assume good faith policy - we should always assume that the other guy is trying to be positive unless he confirms that he definitely intended to bad mouth you. Accusing someone of implying that you are lying is nearly as bad as accusing them of lying themselves. But in this case, I accept that my reply was ambiguous so you were within your rights to challenge (though I'd have stopped at [a]!)

Plough Lane

I've done a major tidy up on the Plough Lane article that you might want to review. As you will see from the history, I did it in two "bites". The first edit just deleted a nest of link spam, dead links, links to personal pages etc, to restore it to a basic Wiki article. That revealed duplicated material and no real structure. Template:Football in the United Kingdom

Hi. I really think combining {{Football in the United Kingdom}} with {{Football in Scotland}} {and with the other three) rather defeats the whole purpose of having separate templates. You may also want to consider that it would be better to use the template (the UK one) selectively, i.e. on articles that actually benefit from it’s inclusion, as opposed to simply welding it on to another template. I would appreciate your opinion. I will revert the template until we (and any others) can reach some sort of agreement. Also you may wish to take a look the pages where the template has not been added correctly, for example: United_Kingdom_national_football_team#External_links. How about we include it on the national team pages, as you suggest, but keep the template as it is? It just seems slightly misleading to suggest a total equivalence between the UK team and the other four, when in reality they are quite different and separate. I’m not suggesting that the UK team shouldn’t be included, just that is should be a little bit more discrete. To be fair, I have conceded quite a lot already. I think this template is a pretty good compromise. Kanaye 14:08, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Because the UK team is insignificant compared to the other teams. It’s like saying an under-19 team should be given priority over a full team. Has the UK team ever competed at the World Cup? What about at the European Championship? Is it even a member of UEFA? It certainly isn’t included in this template: {{Template:UEFA_teams}}

You say that the UK link should be separate yet somehow not different? How is this possible within a coherent and uncomplicated template? I’m really struggling to understand your viewpoint on this. As for the other point, Football in the United Kingdom is the title so another link isn’t really required. I beginning to wonder whether this entire template is really required! Wimbledon history

Hello. Sorry to trouble you with this message from out of the blue, but after having a look at the AFC Wimbledon page history, you seemed to be someone who knows a lot about the club and its predecessor, and I was wondering if you could help point me in the right direction.

I have recently become interested in family history, and have been doing some research into my great-grandfather, one Gordon Campbell Emslie. He played as a left-half for Wimbledon at some point during his career as an amateur footballer — I've no idea how long for, although the only concrete references I have been able to track down are a handful of The Times match reports from the 1922–23 season, in which he is singled out a couple of times, once for scoring a particularly good goal (against Dorking in the FA Amateur Cup on October 14 1922) and once for clearing a shot off the line (against Northampton Nomads in the same competition a couple of months later).

Anyway, I was wondering if you could possibly point me in the direction of any good sources of Dons history in which I might be able to find out a bit more about my great-grandfather's career there in the 1920s — I've tried the historicaldons website, but there's no mention there in their 1920s section. Are there any good books, for example, which cover the club in this era which I should try and track down?

Goodness! Many, many thanks for your very thorough reply to my enquiry — it was very, very kind of you and I am very grateful for all the information and leads you have been able to provide. Thank you also to your fellow fans who helped provide info. I will definitely try and check out the Morden Library newspaper archives the next time I am in London (stuck living in Norwich at the moment!) and see if I can track any mentions of him down.

All this information will certainly also be of interest to my great uncle, GCE's son, who seems very proud of his father's footballing career but has never really known a great deal of the details of it. I'm glad I've been able to dig up some more info for him.

By way of thanks, are you interested in me e-mailing you some copies of the Wimbledon match reports from The Times that I downloaded from their ditigal archive site? I have the reports of Wimbledon 3-5 Clapton (Isthmian League, Aug 26 1922, report from Aug 28), Wimbledon 6-2 The Casuals (FA Amateur Cup, Nov 25 1922, report Nov 27), Wimbledon 0-2 Northampton Nomads (FA Amateur Cup, Dec 9 1922, report from Dec 11) and London Caledonians 1-0 Wimbledon (London Charity Cup, Jan 13 1923, report Jan 15). Club names and representation

I do not consider my observations at talk:A.F.C. Wimbledon to be nonsense.

I excluded national teams (you have no grounds to assume that I am English, incidentally) from my observations on the grounds that they are selected by an authority (your omission of that criteria in your attempt to ridicule my posting leads me to suspect that you realised that that was my intention).

You assert, with no attempt to present a reasoned argument, that a team represents an area simply by adoption of a name: if my friends decided to name their 5-a-side team Great Britain, would they thereby represent the nation? By your assertion, they would.

I do not consider it a shame that I am not a supporter of Colchester United: although I moved to this town a few years ago, I have remained a supporter of the team that I have been a fan of for more than 25 years, and make a 150 mile round trip on matchdays to use my season ticket: I did not, you may be interested to know, make the journey of a similar distance to watch our recent fixtures at Milton Keynes as a matter of principle. You have, without any grounds for doing so, levelled what you consider an insult at me.

Even if you cannot bring yourself to apologise, I would request that you edit your comments on the talk page to remove the insulting tone, and consider presenting reasons for your belief that a commercial organisation, no matter how much they might be of local interest, can claim to represent a locality.
