Community defense

This wasn't appropriate for article talk so I'm taking it here. The concept of community defense as being morally analogous to self-defense comes from a collectivist perspective on the concept of defense. Leftists often see "self-defense" being given special significance over community defense as a concept of toxic individualism. Protection of others, particularly those people who would be your colleagues, collaborators or comrades is a central revolutionary leftist virtue. As such, I'd be hypocritical if I suggested that community defense was not a morally justifiable reason for violence. However community defense generally depends on the presence of a threat to the community; and it strains credibility to claim that journalists from the mainland traveling alone constitute such. @Simonm223: Interesting concepts. In particular regarding the root of self-defense is individualism.. Would never have made that connection if wasn't told. I can see there are situations where community defense is morally justifiable. I suspect the concept is used in some way in some legal systems even if not formally codified, for example in China when judges adjudicate the fights between different villages. Although I am not sure where to draw the line at the moment. In HK where the legal system can mostly be trusted, I would think it's harder to justify. Thanks for sharing. There's a reason why on issues related to China, where I am largely strongest in knowledge (I speak Mandarin, have family in China, have a large circle of Chinese friends and am very well versed in Chinese literature, philosophy and history) I am more deliberately and carefully neutral. @Simonm223: Kudos to you! I can't say I'm good in those things myself even though I was born in China :-). I have lived in USA and UK in the past 20 years or so. I would say I have seen a little bit of both although it's a shame that I have never chosen a topic and delved deep into it (well except for what I have to do for work). That's very true - simple and China don't coexist. That's why it's so important to be neutral. Unfortunately a lot of people equal balanced reporting with assigning blames.
