Thank you TJMSmith. I'll be sure to look at it and use it in the future. It will take a while to get used everything on Wikipedia but I hope to learn more as time goes on.

A lengthy welcome

edit

Hi Lord-of-Midnight-18. Welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily.

Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons policy requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.

If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, which may require you to disclose your relationship and restrict your editing depending upon how you are affiliated with the subject matter. Regardless, editing in a manner that promotes an entity or viewpoint over others can appear to be detrimental to the purpose of Wikipedia and the neutrality required in articles.

Some topic areas within Wikipedia have special editing restrictions that apply to all editors. It's best to avoid these topics until you are extremely familiar with all relevant policies and guidelines.

If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.

I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 03:51, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi!

edit

Thanks for adding a source over at Doomscrolling - much of that article just uses bare urls with <ref> tags wrapped around them, so thank you for adding a reference properly formatted.

Just wanted to let you know for the future - in the source you added, I noticed you used included |language=en. This parameter is actually only used for sources not in English - since this is English Wikipedia, it's kind of a given that the sources, unless otherwise noted, are in English. If the source is in English, you don't have to give the language, in short.

It's not a big problem - it doesn't actually display in the References section like you'd see on non-English sources (e.g., "1. Blah Blah Blah (in French/Spanish/Mandalorian)"), but it does get removed if it just reads |language=en, |language=en-GB, |language=en-US, or |language=en-AUS, and the like.

If you ever fancy a bit of drive-by cleanup, nerfing these language parameters is a way to pass the time; that, and removing double spaces in main body text, changing |accessdate= to |access-date=, |archiveurl= to |archive-url= and |archivedate= to |archive-date=.

Just thought I'd pop in to say. Thank you for editing Wikipedia! --Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) 10:31, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you :)

I sometimes edit Wikipedia to try to keep my mind off things (in this case it was the 2021 storming of the US Capitol). I really like your username. Are you a fan of Good Omens?
