Welcome

I can't decide which of the welcome templates to use. The most important page for a new user who wants to learn lots is the Editor's index to Wikipedia. --Teratornis (talk) 18:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Barb Higgins

edit

I have started a page for Barb in my userspace feel free to add information to it, once it meets Wikipedia standards I will move it to the main space. It must maintain a neutral point of view and everything needs to be properly sourced. The article should mostly be about her career as a journalist, since her political career is still barely existent, Wikipedia is not a news outlet. If you have any questions or concerns please leave them here as I will have your talkpage on my watchlist. - Mcmatter (talk|contrib) 20:45, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much I appreciate it.

Please review WP:POLITICIAN; a candidate for political office is not notable just for being a candidate. Certainly if she wins, she'll obviously qualify for an article as a big-city mayor — but Wikipedia's job when it comes to politicians is to write articles about people who have actually held a political office, not to be a publisher of campaign literature for candidates who haven't actually been elected to anything yet. We're not news media, we're an encyclopedia, and simply being a candidate for political office doesn't in and of itself make her a suitable topic for an encyclopedia article.
Toronto also has municipal elections coming up in the fall — and out of all the candidates for mayor, the only ones who have articles on here are the ones who were already notable enough for other reasons (being an MPP, a city councillor, etc.) that they'd still have articles even if they weren't running for mayor. As Mcmatter points out above, Barb Higgins might be sufficiently notable as a journalist, but even that's not a given when it comes to local news anchors. It ultimately comes down to the quality of the sources — if the only meaningful information on the web about her career in journalism comes from a profile on CTV's own website, then that won't be good enough, as it will fail the requirement that sources be independent of the topic.
You're certainly free to work on a new version of the article in userspace, but unless and until she actually wins the election I just can't guarantee that a version sitting in articlespace wouldn't get deleted again if it isn't supported by really solid sources. Ok, thanks for taking the time to give input and feedback. I'll work on the article as award winning journalist and see if I can meet the requirements you've mentioned, and, if she wins then at least I've go t a head start.

Mcmatter, please have a look at the Barb Higgins page in your userspace. I have worked to create an encyclopedic article stub that is primarily about her journalistic career and only peripherally about her current run for office. Several secondary references have been used, including news outlets beyond CTV where she worked. I feel notability as a journalist has been established through her documentary and series that have won national awards. let me know if you think it is nearly ready to go up.

I think it may be ready, I have put up a request for feedback if the reviewer gives a positive review I will move it to the namespace. - Mcmatter (talk|contrib) 16:08, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just wanted to add, I am doing this article a longer way then many articles are written, the reason I am doing it this way is so we have time to work on it , or else it would have been speedy deleted before the 3 edit. For any future articles that you wish to create I always suggest doing it in your userspace first and having a peer review done before you move it to the namespace. Many editors, myself included, scan the new page creation log and hit hard and fast with criteria for speedy deletion to maintain the Wikipedia policies. The Userspace is more liberal and allows time for editors to grow new healthy articles to meet Wikipedia policies in the namespace.- Mcmatter (talk|contrib) 16:20, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Page is now live- Mcmatter (talk|contrib) 16:41, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I appreciate the help and a bit of guidance putting up my first article.
