Did you know that Artificial Intelligences (AIs) support Wikipedia? I saw your post on Teahouse, and I’m personally contacting a small handful of new Wikipedia editors to make sure your voice is heard as we build and refine these AIs.

Will you please provide an interview to share your thoughts about AI on Wikipedia? It would only take about 30 minutes over phone or video chat. We will send you a $15 Amazon gift card as a way to thank you for your time.

Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Hedy Lamarr: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. Your comment does not reference the justification that I put in the Talk page (which I mentioned in a comment when saving the edit). Did you see my justification in the Talk page?

I did not see that justification. It was my mistake, I apologize. In the future, I'll make sure to look more thoroughly for that kind of thing. Thanks for letting me know (Also, as a side note, I can't find any revert of mine in the edit history of James Chinlund. I might have attempted to revert your edits, but I don't think it went through, possibly because you edited the page again in the time that I tried. I must not have realized, and posted the notice on your talk page anyway). As I noted in my comment to Accesscrawl, it is interesting that both of you wished to revert to an uncited claim, which happens to be incorrect. If it’s uncited, perhaps it’s worth looking into the reason for my change (AGF).

I appreciate the apology but it does not change my impression that the culture of wikipedia editors is rigid and not welcoming to new editors (don’t bite). Ultimately it places limitations on the quality of Wikipedia, as well as the quality of my experience trying to contribute. Mariedegournay (talk) 16:18, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry you feel that way. I tried not to seem BITEy with the message I posted on your talk page (a template, by the way). Also, I'm not sure whether the culture of Wikipedia is rigid and unwelcoming to new users, although I'm sure it can definitely feel overwhelming and can seem somewhat emotionless to a new user. Talk page is a template: what does that mean or what is the significance of that?

Here’s a statement from an Atlantic article regarding the experience of new editors, although it is dated now: “ The authors of a study published in American Behavioral Scientist in 2012 concluded that the number of active Wikipedia contributors has been declining because the site’s community isn’t welcoming enough to new editors. ‘For somebody who’s making their first edit,’ acknowledges Katherine Maher, ‘we could do more to make it clearer as to what constitutes an edit that is in good faith, that is not a conflict-of-interest edit.’

I did not feel the tone of your post was BITEy, but the intent to revert to an uncited claim without investigation was. And you apologized which I accept. I still maintain that good-faith participants who make an effort to follow the Byzantine rules are discouraged from contributing because of knee-jerk policing of changes. Yes, I meant that my response was a template, which I posted using the Twinkle tool. I again admit that the fault was mine for reverting it so quickly. If it helps, it wasn't personal or attempting to follow the "Byzantine rules" or attempting to force any particular policy, aside from the policies on unconstructive editing (obviously); your edit had shown up on a filter of possible bad faith edits, so I checked the edit history of the page and decided to revert. Interesting that it was flagged as a possible bad faith edit. Sounds like that filter could use improvement. Whe it shows up there, it probably primes the editor to suspend AGF. I don’t know who designs those filters but that is part of the problem here.
