TableTennis

Hey, what is the purpose of this edit? Normmaly it is not removed so just want to know why you do this, as it makes no difference or is an improvement. Kante4 (talk) 22:11, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Just removed unused parameters so that makes it faster to scroll to the second and further rounds for editing. If you think the move is not necessary and improve nothing then I would choose not to take similar actions on any of these articles. --LLTT (talk) 22:40, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Suttler???

I'd be intrigued to hear any source or etymology for calling a badminton player a 'suttler'. Kevin McE (talk) 21:33, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

I don't know the exact etymology of the word, just see the word used sometimes in articles. I guess it's from shuttlecock/shuttle. If the word is not commonly known as badminton players, please help improve the wording, thank you. LLTT (talk) 02:34, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

I have changed it to 'player'; I see no online dictionary for 'suttler' other than an archaic spelling of 'sutler', a civilian provisioner to the military. Are these English language articles? What form of English? Kevin McE (talk) 13:37, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

It was a typo on the "Taiwan" page of the Wikipedia. I should have typed "shuttler" instead of "suttler". The word "shuttler" might have mainly seen on Indian websites, or the article "P. V. Sindhu" or "Badminton in India" on the Wikipedia. LLTT (talk) 14:08, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Mostly WTTC related stuff

Hello LLTT,

First of all, I would like to thank you for your longevity and service to improving table tennis coverage on Wikipedia (coming from a relatively newer participant to the project and to the sport). I had a couple questions on table tennis stuff.

1. After the World Cup got rebranded, is the WTT Cup Finals now replacing the World Cup as a requirement for the Grand Slam?
2. Looking through this template about the WTTC, I noticed that for the 1935, 1938, 1948, and 1954 tournaments, it lists Wembley as the location while on the page World Table Tennis Championships, the table shows London (e.x. 1935 London). Because for continuity sake, should we change the template to say London instead?
3. Most recently, for the 2023 WTTC tournament, I saw that you edited the brackets to hide omitted cells (e.x. here). I noticed that for previous tournaments, this was not done to those brackets so it may look inconsistent on Wikipedia. Also, I kind of prefer it to show the blank cells but that's my opinion.

1. I don't think there's an official definition of a Gram Slam. The so-called GS was probably originated in China. Chinese media use the term GS in various sports. I personally think the current WTT Cup Finals is similar to the previous ITTF World Tour Grand Finals and the Men's/Women's World Cup. Since the WTT Cup Finals was translated as World Cup in China, I guess the current WTT Cup Finals has replaced the Men's/Women's World Cup. However, the winners of the WTT Cup Finals only win 1500 points for world ranking, less than the 2000 points for the Olympics, World Championships, and the Singapore Smash. I don't think the WTT rates the WTT Cup Finals as one of the top 3 tournaments in table tennis.

2. Locations of the WTTC were written as Wembley on old ITTF pages when I created the template. Some old pages here: www.ittf.com/history/documents/ . The ITTF didn't pay much attention to its old records and I don't really know the administrative divisions of the United Kindom. So I think it's ok to be changed to London unless other editors think Wembley and London are two different cities.

3. I just found that new parameter was created to omit cells and gave it a try last month. I prefer to omit cells on four-round brackets becasue the blank cells are severely squeezed, but I don't hold a strong position on the issue. After all, I don't think the brackets on Wikipedia were originally designed for 7-game sports such as table tennis. Four-round brackets on table tennis pages were not displayed as well as 5-game tennis pages.

Thanks for the informative reply. I did not realize that the Cup Finals awarded less points for the rankings. I find it interesting though that we add medals to the infoboxes of players on Wikipedia for the Cup Finals but not for Singapore Smash.

It seems that the ITTF itself is inconsistent with the locations. As seen here (from the link you sent me), the ITTF lists 1935, 1938, etc. as London while on a different PDF, it says Wembley. I'm not very familiar with administrative divisions of the UK either but it seems that Wembley is inside of London. However, I think it's fine to keep is as Wembley for now unless someone is really passionate because it would be kind of annoying to switch everything (many infoboxes say Wembley for medal winners) and also the ITTF also lists them as Wembley.

You make a good point about the cells being squeezed. Although in pages like 2021 World Table Tennis Championships – Men's singles, it looks fine even though the cells aren't omitted.
