Places

A couple of things for you to note when you're writing articles about communities:

1. Firstly, please note that "municipality" is not synonymous with all communities. Only a place that actually has its own incorporated local government is a municipality; a place that's inside a larger entity is not. For example, Malcolm, Ontario is not a municipality — it's a named area within the municipality of Brockton.
2. Secondly, if all you can write about a community is the fact that it exists, then it doesn't really need its own distinct article in the first place. If you can't write at least a full paragraph about a community with at least one real reference in it, then it should be a redirect to its municipality, not a standalone article.

These short articles were created with the assumption that they are hamlets. After a recent review of which settlements are actually hamlets, it was found that these community are not currently registered by Alberta as a hamlet, if it they ever were. Places

Don't worry about it...it's just that it'll take a few people to get it sorted out, that's all. And while we might sometimes redirect a really small and unreferenceable place to another article instead of leaving it as a separate article, we never delete articles about real places no matter how small they are. The only ones I've deleted are places where there was an error (spelling, incorrect title, etc.) in the link you started with in the first place — but those errors wouldn't be your fault; you just created a stub for every redlink on the list, and if there were some that were wrong it's the fault of the person who put an incorrect link there in the first place. Climate of Edmonton & Calgary

My apologies, I thought my computer was acting up until your message popped up. If I’m reading this right, if we’re using Koppen’s classification, you can’t have a “semi-arid continental climate”. You’re basically describing a steppe climate (which is semi-arid). The map [1], categorizes both cities as Dfb climates. The map is indeed correct as neither city is semi-arid. As crazy as this sounds the two cities have a humid continental climate, albeit a very dry version of the climate. (G. Capo (talk) 20:53, 19 January 2010 (UTC))

List of YouTube personalities

I reverted your edit of that page. There are other entries within that list that don't have references. The entries of Neil Cicierega, Savannah Outen, and Nigahiga (Nigahiga is personal favorite of mine) don't have references. Every entry needs a reference. If having your an article doesn't require a reference, then why is there is issues with KevJumba and whether or not he is notable? Some links you're adding to Lauren Luke seem questionable, for example this one to a blog that encourages readers to shop, but has little or no encyclopedic content.[2] ("...you can run (don't walk) to your nearest Sephora and buy it in-store! Just launched today (We heard it's in 135 stores), you can touch, play, and pick from one of 5 perfectly coordinated palettes") This doesn't seem justified per WP:SPAM or WP:LINKSTOAVOID. Citation templates for mountain articles

Hi. I have noticed you adding a whole bunch of new mountains, which is great. Just as well is your addition of sources but it would be an improvement if you used the citation templates so the references look better organized. For references to pages on bivouac.com, you can use the {{cite bivouac}} template, specifying the mountain id, name and the access date, as shown in the following example:

<ref name=bivouac>{{cite bivouac|id=14|name=Mount Logan|accessdate=2010-02-19}}</ref>

PeakFinder does not currently have its own citation template. You can copy/paste the following sample for using the {{cite web}} template:

<ref name=pf>{{cite web|url=http://www.peakfinder.com/peakfinder.asp?PeakName=Mount+Robson|title=Mount Robson|
publisher=PeakFinder|accessdate=2010-02-19}}</ref>

I wasn't a Wikipedia user at the time of the redirect of List of cities in Alberta to List of communities in Alberta#Cities last summer. Can you recall why the redirection occurred while the same did not for Villages of Alberta, Summer villages of Alberta, Hamlets of Alberta and List of Alberta municipal districts? Also, your input on the proposed creation of a Cities of Alberta article would be greatly appreciated, especially since it is essentially a suggested reversal of the past redirect. such articles (religion) often come across COI and I submit there's probably quite a bit of WP:OWN going on too. However I know independently of this article that she is the head/founder of the Emissaries of the Divine Light a "major minor" religious sect of largely white Hindus, or with Hindu-like belief, who are very active as a religious minority in various parts of BC, particularly in the South Cariboo, around 100 Mile House, and in the West Kootenay; on a friend's whim we went out to the east shore of Kootenay Lake to check out their ashram and temple (and gift-shop LOL....but it was a very nice gift-shop); her image is the featured item on the flower table in the temple/meditation room. I don't know much more about them except that their existence is regularly recounted in local and sometimes provincial media; around 100 Mile House their relative wealth is one thing keeping local retailers going (along with a large population of wealthy German aristocrats). I've never found further citations about them, though I'm sure they're out there if I dug hard enough; about her is another matter; but just because she's obscure doesn't mean she's not notable. You should alost note, by way of example about COI on religion pages, that most saint and bishop pages in the Orthodox Church article hierarchy are clearly COI, often POV or at least "unbalanced"; some have links that go through to a members-only Wiki run by the church (i.e. which is not editable by other Wikipdeians....).....if anything this article I think needs just better cites and an article is needed on the Emissaries....pls reply on my talkpage it's easier for me to keep track of than watchlisting everyone's pages for single topics...Skookum1 (talk) 03:53, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Saint-Gédéon, Quebec

Thanks for creating Saint-Gédéon, Quebec. I was able to expand the article with some material from the corresponding article in the French Wikipedia. If you create any more articles about places in Quebec, please check whether there is a corresponding article in the French Wikipedia which you can add an interwiki link to. Articles in the French Wikipedia don't normally include the name of the province in the title, so the French article on Saint-Gédéon, Quebec can be found at fr:Saint-Gédéon. The reason I mention this is that another editor put a speedy tag on Dixville, Quebec, another article which you created. I removed the speedy tag and expanded that article as well. Location map

Hello,
Please be aware that longitude and latitude are divided into 60 minutes, which are divided into 60 seconds. {{Location map}} uses decimal degrees, which means to calculate degrees in decimals from minute and second format, you must divide the seconds by 60, then add that number to the minutes, then divide that number by 60, then add that number to the degrees. Simply placing the minutes and seconds number after the decimal will not place the red dot on location map in the correct location. Also, something as small as a building can be a couple of seconds across, hundreds of a second accuracy is not need for hamlets (it is false precision), seconds is fine. Climate of Edmonton & Calgary

Thanks for the compliment. First off, I must state that Koppen’s system isn’t flawless. A few cities (like Edmonton and Calgary) do not fall neatly into any category. However, I believe that it’s the best system to classify climates. Going strictly by the numbers, Edmonton & Calgary are both humid continental climates. However, I would emphasize these cities relative lack of humidity. I’d characterize Edmonton as a markedly drier version of a humid continental climate. I’d emphasize the fact that while Edmonton technically has a humid continental climate, it is not a particularly humid city. Calgary is a more complicated situation. My gut says that Calgary has a steppe climate, or at least has a strong steppe influence. I would write something to this effect…Calgary features a humid continental climate with a strong steppe influence. As a result, a “humid continental climate” is something of a misnomer to describe Calgary’s climate.G. Capo (talk) 17:26, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

I am going to be posting this on multiple editor talk pages to get some discussion going. We have yet another section on the talk page requesting Ray William Johnson be added to the List of YouTube personalities. Something has to be done because people request he be added and don't give any references for the most part but someone tried to give references, but I checked them and they were not good ones. I have posted the following on the Winnipeg article discussion page:

Why do certain people insist on placing the statement "According to Environment Canada....Winnipeg is the coldest city in the world with over 600,000 population", when even with the qualification that the claim only relates to daily minima for the Dec-Feb period the statement is not true. There are numerous other cities that are far larger (Harbin, Ulan Bator, etc.) that have colder nightly minima during the winter months. Is it because the statement is sourced? Should a statement that is patently false belong in this article simply because a source can be provided? Can it not be accepted that Environment Canada makes errors? More important is annual average temperature. With respect to that, Winnipeg is not even the coldest major city in Canada, Edmonton is. Please explain on the Winnipeg discussion page why you continue to revert my edit which deletes an untrue statement (sourced or not). Please explain why you feel that a statement that is false belongs in the Winnipeg article and provide an argument as to your rationale for believing that it does.

By the way, in the grocery store today I saw a National Enquirer with the headline that a man gave birth to a baby. Kyle1278, per your Calgary revert here, please provide the link to the previous discussion you referred to so that this edit conflict can be resolved expeditiously. I'm ignorant on climate types and don't know the history of this discussion, but I have observed that climate information is often controversial due to varying POVs and sources. I've also observed that your climate-related edits are usually, if not always upheld amidst the varying POVs and sources. At face value, could it be that places with documented low humidity can still be located within what is known as the humid continental climate? If so, this could be what is generating the perception that the content in Calgary's climate section is contradictory. Hwy43 (talk) 22:27, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Re Lillooet climate citations

Hi; saw your addition of the "means" to Lytton and Lillooet, caused me to fix a few citations/wordings on Lillooet's page. I'm the one who added the uncited bit about the microclimates varying on different benches, it's very, very true....I had a look at Environment Canada's historical data, and it complicates things that the measuring station has moved over time....currently it's at, SFAIK, the Seton Powerhouse just south of Cayoosh Creek, though the MoF keeps its own weather measure, not sure if that's reported on-line, ditto the school, t he RCMP etc.....and at Riverlands Farm in East Lillooet. The historical locations vary, some were originally at the government agent's office (about where the post office is now).....there's gotta be biogeoclimatic study on the area, somewhere, it's rather famous around there for the rapidly-shifting climate regimes.....but also here to note that historical records, such as for highs and lows and rainfall, were not all from a constant location, but changing over time....in the area, moving by 1/4 mile is a lot, climate-wise....the Powerhouse is a good half mile from downtown, maybe more, and not really representative of town....in the same way that YVR's weather data doesn't apply to downtown Vancouver, or even to South Vancouver/Kerrisdale, though they're nearby.....Skookum1 (talk) 00:44, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
