Catskill Mountain Railroad edit

Sorry about that. I was going through the Category:Candidates for speedy deletion and sometimes there is a lot of articles in there. If I have any doubt about them I won't delete them. I had a quick look yesterday and saw that Catskill Mountain Railroad was referred to in the Ulster and Delaware Railroad#Ulster and Delaware Railroad section (3rd paragraph) and thought a redirect was a good idea. Looking at what you wrote on my page plus what's at Talk:Catskill Mountain Railroad it might be a good idea to change it to a disambiguation. Cheers. Wallkill Valley Railroad edit

Nice article. Could it say something about the fact that the line from Walden south is still in use as a freight spur by Norfolk Southern (connecting to the main line at the Campbell Hall Metro-North station)? Daniel Case 03:09, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

FAC references edit

Honestly, I don't know how to format references or footnotes, I only know to check FACs for whether or not they're there. However, several other users, such as Bishonen and Ta bu shi da yu have written FAs with such refs and notes, and should be able to help you. I'm sorry I personally can't be of more help, RyanGerbil10 (Drop on in!) 04:39, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... edit

Errr...yeah. How do I list the references in different areas but make it so that it doesn't show up as there being 15 references when there are only 4? Kschwerdt514 04:45, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... yep. If you simply use the <ref></ref>tags, as you've done, you'll get a new footnote every time. To only list each reference once, copy the way the notes are done in Simon Byrne. Take a look at note 1, and see how the abcde business works when you click between the note numerals in the text and the reference at the bottom. Then open the article in edit mode and see how these notes are coded in the text. You see how the first of them (a) has the complete information, while the others (bcde) only have the "name"? The name for footnote 1 is "Svinth". To use this system, you need to invent a unique name for each of your 4 footnote numbers. (The a's and b's will be added automatically, don't write them anywhere.) Hope this helps. It's the most usual system, so it's the way to do it if you want to join the majority. (It's not the system I like or use myself, as it happens; I prefer to have the footnote numbers nicely ordered in the text and avoid the abcde mess, by making one footnote section plus one separate references section at the bottom, as in S. A. Andree's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897. But I'm in a minority.) Bishonen | talk 05:52, 14 June 2006 (UTC).Reply
Bish asked me to comment. I will show you the text in <nowiki> tags, then show the output.

Add the ref tags like this <ref name="first">First reference</ref> and this <ref name="second">Second reference</ref>. Then add the <references/> tag in a "References" section at the bottom. And to use a reference a second time, just add a short invocation like this.<ref name="second"/> <references/>

Add the ref tags like this [1] and this [2]. Then add the <references/> tag in a "References" section at the bottom. And to use a reference a second time, just add a short invocation like this.[2]

  1. ^ First reference
  2. ^ a b Second reference

Ta da! HTH. Which article are we talking about? There are some shorter examples around too, such as Virgo Stellar Stream.-- ALoan (Talk) 10:13, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar awarded to Kschwerdt514 by Karl Meier for his many excellent contributions, such as those on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad article.

No problem. I read the article, noticed what you where doing with it, and it was obvious that you deserved that barnstar. I am just happy that you like it.   -- Karl Meier 07:30, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

FACs edit

Yes. Many FAcs missed the first time around. As we said over there, that article needs to go to peer review first. I'd fix the problems everyone pointed out first, though. Daniel Case 13:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good. But don't take it right back. Go to peer review first. And then wait a little while before submitting for featured status again ... some people get really upset about nominees that come back to FAC awful fast. Daniel Case 02:26, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll look for it when it does.

Actually, we should nearly be done with reservoirs in the Catskills soon ... seems like between you and me we got 'em all except Cannonsville. Good thing I've been creating some for the Croton watershed.

Also, I'm not sure "Catskill watershed" and "Delaware watershed" are the best names for those categories. They're too vague ... I could click on the latter expecting to find the Delaware's tributaries. Not all of us are NYCDEP employees for whom they need no explanation. Maybe something incorporating a reference to the city? (Let's agree on something before taking it to CFD). Daniel Case 03:59, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, that does reflect DEP's administrative divisions better (the same staff works on all further upstate reservoirs regardless of watershed ... I've always thought that was a meaningless division anyway). But I still think the category name needs to ... aah, I'll just let that one go for now.

You do need to nominate the old categories for deletion, though, because there's no sense in keeping them if they're going to stay empty. See WP:CFD. Daniel Case 13:18, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template:User birder edit

Hi Kschwerdt - curious why you changed the pic in this? - when I made the template I chose the Ruddy Turnstone pic carefully, because it is a species which occurs on every continent, and so is familiar to birders throughout the world, not just in one small area. Hope you won't mind that I'm putting it back ;-) - MPF 10:58, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Arctic Tern - yeah, sure, go ahead! There's one here if you like it (one of my pics ;-) - MPF 20:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikicommons-Wikipedia edit

Hi again - it's very easy, you just type the name of the image in the usual formatting, and that looks for it automatically on commons, so [[Image:Pic-name-at-commons.jpg|thumb|Caption]] will do it for you. The only exception is for placing pics in taxoboxes, where you need to chop off "Image:" (but you have to do that with local-uploaded pics too). The whole thing about commons is so that its pics can be added to every wikipedia - English, German, Swedish, Swahili, you-name-it; a pic uploaded on English wiki can only be used on English wiki, not on any others. - MPF 08:49, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

NYC water system edit

Good job, good job. I'd give you a barnstar but ... I just did!

Seriously, this is great. In two weeks we've (ahem) covered ground that I was taking months to do alone (because I would only create reservoir articles when I had pictures to go with them ... now I'll have to go up to the Catskills this weekend and take some more!)

What we need now, as you suggested, is articles on the aqueducts (there are many locations near me where a good pic of the Catskill Aqueduct is possible) and the Shandaken Tunnel. I'd also like to do (this will take some skill) a master navigation template for all the water system-related articles.

And, of course, a master article on the New York City Water Supply System, possibly with a daughter history article (Liquid Assets and Water for Gotham are invaluable resources there).

Meantime, too, someone should find the time or way to make a free version of the city's watershed map. I suppose it should be me but I need to get better at making SVGs. Daniel Case 20:23, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welll ... I had been thinking of going up with my son and hiking Vly Mountain, which has a great spot at one corner of the summit ridge where you have a view of Schoharie Reservoir like no other. Of course, good vistas of the reservoirs from the mountains are actually kind of rare. And I have a lot of other mountain-based pictures in the Catskills I'd like to take, anyway. Daniel Case 21:12, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template edit

My idea would be something similar to {{New York}} (used at the bottom of many New York-related articles whether it's really warranted or not. Obviously it takes time to do right. Daniel Case 16:15, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I like it! I might consider making the template colors blue and green after the NYCDEP logo. But that's exactly the sort of thing I had envisioned. Thanks for rolling up your sleeves.

BTW, do you like the Shandaken Tunnel picture? Daniel Case 05:10, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also BTW, you can use the {{tl}} template to put template links in text with the brackets and without the actual template. Daniel Case 05:12, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Possible reservoir infobox edit

I see you put {{Infobox lake}} in Ashokan Reservoir. It's a good idea but I think what we really need is a reservoir infobox (Chew Valley Lake, a featured article, has what could be a prototype). Perhaps we could tweak the existing lake infobox a bit (I didn't even know until recently there was a lakes WikiProject; maybe I'll suggest it there) to include things like construction, dam, operating authority etc. and delete some of the unneeded things (settlements, not really likely on a reservoir). Daniel Case 04:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I started a discussion on this at the lakes project talk page. The one remark from the project initiator seems favorable so far.

Tell you what, keep the lake infobox there until we come up with a reservoir one. Daniel Case 02:23, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Chichester edit

Chichester is a hamlet, not a village (it has never been incorporated to the best of my knowledge.

Participant of WikiProject Trains question edit

There is no formal process to being a participant. The idea of being listed is that you are introducing yourself and explaining your particular interests to other people who are also WikiProject Trains editors. That way, when you edit a WikiProject Trains page, the other partipants will know who you are. So, feel free to add yourself to the list. MrHudson 01:11, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

RE: I have another question edit

To add a page to WikiProject Trains add the tags seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Trains/Assessment#Instructions and the article will be included in the project when the list is generated overnight. MrHudson 22:33, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Thanks! edit

I put B on Ulster and Delaware because it's the highest ranking below GA, which it does not appear to have attained. I did, however, add it to the Wikipedia:Good articles/Nominations and put {{GAnominee}} on the talk page. This article definitely should move up through the chain, and once it attains GA status, it will move up in the project ratings. The rating scheme is enumerated on Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Assessment. Slambo (Speak) 15:54, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:ContrabassSarrusophone.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:ContrabassSarrusophone.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Fair use rationale for Image:Mazzeo clar1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Mazzeo clar1.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.
