Articles of unclear importance

Hi! You probably won't remember it but last June you tagged Boron phosphide as being of unclear importance. The tag being still there and the article not being updated, I was considering removing it from there (the backlog at Category:Wikipedia articles with topics of unclear importance from June 2006 is huge) since the article is already marked as a stub. What do you think about that? Do you have any idea on how to improve such articles (a lot of Chemistry components are marked as such). Thanks for your input! Vandalism on Semitone

Hello Keenan,

Do you recall the work on the Semitone done primarily by you, Rainwarrior,"Mark" and myself? We all seemed satisfied with the results. Unfortunately, the article was vandalized on November 28, 2006, and the same day an attempt at reverting the vandalism was made. I had not checked the article for several months, but did so today. I was quite upset to find that some of the vandal's efforts had not been fully corrected, and that some professional help is needed quickly!

If you check the History of the Semitone Article, you will find there was an entire section on the Minor Second (item 1 of Contents), and one on the Augmented Unison (item 2 of Contents). The vandal COMPLETELY REMOVED the fine work on the Minor Second, including Rainwarrior's excellent musical excerpts, replacing it with nonsense. Furthermore, EVERY WORD of this section had been subjected to extensive research, discussion, and scrutiny. While the nonsense has been removed, the entire section on the Minor Second is MISSING!

The CORRECT version of the Minor Second section last appeared on November 22, 2006, in the Semitone History section. I am not sure how to restore it, but it is ESSENTIAL to the Article. (I don't want to make mistakes which could mess up the article, and in any case, I am not sure if I have the authority to make such a move.) I AM THEREFORE REQUESTING THE INTERVENTION OF YOUR EXPERTISE.

(As I recall, it was my own insistence that the Augmented Unison and Minor Second be treated equally, and the "Semitone" Article was therefore restored.) In defense of the COMPLETENESS and ACCURACY of the encylopedia,

Hi. Didn't know you were an admin - I thought you were the author of the page and I was just trying to be a good wikizen and follow the rules by notifying the author. Regarding whether it qualifies for speedy delete, well I will yield to you on that, but as far as whether it should be deleted, my feeling is it is pretty basic housekeeping that it should be deleted and housekeeping is eveyone's responsibility, IMO, not just admins. What is the point of having it on the server other than that it is "harmless"? Regarding "more important things to worry about", I don't think that way and if I am on my way to an important meeting and I see a bit of trash on the floor, I pick it up and throw it away. It does not detract from the more important things to do a bit of minor housekeeping. What detracts, if anything does, is bothering to discuss it which has taken time from both of us. Nuclear Meltdown

Hi, Keenan Pepper, I read your question on the Spanish refdesk the other day, and the highly ambiguous translation that Camima offered. Wordreference.com translates it as "fusión de un reactor nuclear", which somewhat reduces the ambiguity. Googling shows that "derretimiento" is hardly ever used in this context in Spanish, although "derretimento" appears to be the word of choice in Portugese. Half diminished scale

Hello Keenan, and despite our disagreements in the past, I am urging your help (if the true interests and goals of Wikipedia are our mutual goal). Please check out an article entitled "half diminished scale". It might help to start with the page's history, and it's pathetic presentation. (It used to carry a tag, of "needing wikification".) I tried to salvage it, and the tag was removed.) Still I feel it is a pointless article, since it is most rare that practicing musicians describe this particular scale as "half diminished" (see Talk Page). Help with an entry

Hey, I know that you have somewhat of an interest in chemistry articles so I was hoping you could help me with one (Freezing-point depression to be exact.) bad jpegs

I'm way far away from the real world (i.e. I'm in Wyoming USA) and won't be able to deal with any of this until I return to the real world. As you note almost all images are jpegs (which I thought were okay . . . there were no contra-indications from wikipedia until now). I know that one guy took one of the jpgs (on Turing machine ) and fiddled with it, putting it back modified as a png or something like that. I'm no wizard, I'm a really old guy (>30 years): I don't know how to convert them, and reconstruction would probably be impossible as what you are looking at are (basically) the originals. I will avoid jpegs in the future (they don't look so good on certain browsers, I do know that). Lemme know what you want to do here (but it will be weeks before I can make anything can happen), I certainly have no allegance to jpegs. wvbaileyWvbailey 23:45, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for trying to improve Media:UnitedStatesGraphViz.png with an SVG version, but as you noted the rotation is wrong. Orientation is crucial to this image, as I'm trying to show that the physical layout of the graph matches the actual geometry from which it originates. I actually tried to produce a proper SVG with neato v2.12 (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:UnitedStatesGraphViz2.svg ) but it evidently looks cut off. Also, I wonder why the SVG looks so horrible in Firefox! In any case, I undid your changes in order to at least preserve the orientation. Note that this was prompted by a note from an actual Graphviz expert (see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3AJordanSamuels&diff=143005516&oldid=127526764 ). Hi Keenan. Here are a couple of random ideas. <OR> There may be two processes involved: typing a's individually, and just holding down the 'a' key and letting it repeat automatically. Six a's are starting to be a lot to type individually, but are not many to type by holding down the 'a' key. Also, when I hold down the 'a' key, the rate at which a's are typed speeds up suddenly after a few a's so that it is not easy for me to deliberately type exactly 6 a's in this way. Two letter repeats like banananana can't be done by holding down one key so, if there is anything to these ideas, they may have differently shaped graphs. </OR> Cardamon 04:31, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Physics

Keenan, Peter Lamont here. Do you really not know that accelleration leads to loss of temperature. It is, I believe, a tennet of General Relativity. Think about it - ball lands, warms up. Surely you can see that? What happens next? That's right , ball rebounds.

Now, if I'm wrong, the ball will warm up again, right? As it falls back... And then it warms again, as it lands for the second time. That's an awful lot of warming. By the time your ball has bounced down a flight of stairs, it must surely be too hot to touch?

Same goes for the Loss of Pressure and Expansion. Can you really not see it?

Decay Rates

I posted this question on the reference desk, but no one responded. I was hoping you would know. This website [4] shows how decay times depend on the force responsible for the decay (scroll down). Is there any (hopefully simple) way to calculate this using the coupling constant, mass etc.? Thanks, 69.17.180.90 (talk) 18:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC).

I'll reply here because your IP address appears to be changing. There's no way to calculate those decay lifetimes because they don't really mean anything. It's a kind of lie-to-children. Those numbers are supposed to give a feel for the average decay times in "ordinary" situations, but there's no way to make that rigorous. In certain situations, the ordering of the times can even be reversed. For example, some nuclear isomers can decay by either beta decay (through the weak interaction) or gamma decay (through the electromagnetic interaction), but they are more likely to beta decay. That means the branching fraction for beta decay is higher, so the partial half-life for beta decay is shorter (whereas usually the partial half-life for the electromagnetic interaction is shorter). I'm sure you can find examples where the electromagnetic interaction goes faster than the strong interaction, as well. —Keenan Pepper 22:01, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

there seems to be a sign mistake in your article.

If I compare the formula of the g_{\mu\nu} with the wellknown Schwarzschild-Metric, then the last line should be

  g_{ij} = (1 + 2U)\delta_{ij}.

A simple power expansion of (1-2M/r)^{-1} gives 1 + 2M/r + ... Or am I wrong?

mechanical turk

thank you for your reply. however, I cannot create a HIT since despite having a balance of $30+ as a hit completer, the system requires a transfer with a credit card. if you have a credit card, you could make a HIT requester (I can't because I don't have a CC) with $1 and then remove your credit card. This is enough for me to test the API, since I'll be submitting $0.01 hits, so $1.00 is enough for a hundred of them. Why am I leaving Wikipedia?

Keenan Pepper, take a good look at my user page. I believe it documents that fact that I have been a long time contributor of good articles related to my many years of engineering experience.

So why have I decided to leave Wikipedia? Because I have grown weary of the revisions made by unexperienced people who think they know a subject when they really don't know it. I am also weary of people who make revisions because they "know better than anyone else". In particular, the actions of one young postgrad student who calls himself Headbomb with whom it is impossible to reason because of his firm belief that he is infallible ... and that he and only he "knows better than anyone else". His attitude has finally been the last straw in making my decision to leave Wikipedia. I am simply tired of trying to reason with the likes of Headbomb.

I feel your follow-up to my answer at the science ref-desk perpetuates wiki-lawyering and detracts from the core policy--the #1 pillar--that wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Don't you think that equating the practice of medicine with counting teeth (before and after analysis) gives a bad impression about the intelligence of the wikipedia community? I didn't create the original graphs, I just reformatted them as SVG. For example, File:Penis frequency.svg comes from File:Penis frequency.jpg. I do that to a lot of images.
