What is the reason you change the template?

I am just wondering, what is the reason you change the template for the states of Malaysia (i.e {{Kelantan}}? Is it already better with the flag and its coats of arms? are there other problems persisted? --Zack2007 12:59, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

i suggested it in Category talk:Malaysian navigational boxes before i changed anything. earth agreed with my suggestion. so far i have changed the state templates for sabah, kelantan, n9, johor, and perlis. u prefer the old one ah? if u dont like it, we'll see what we can do alright..

i just realised btw that i had earlier changed the kelantan template on 14 feb. i forgot about this when doing it the 2nd time on 18 feb. so i was not aware of the revert u did until just now..

I found the old template is actually a mess when viewed in Internet Explorer. Try viewing the template for Kuala Lumpur article in IE. So it is timely to convert all these into a collapsible template like what you are doing now. the navbox generic template gives a cleaner, neater look with categories clearly shown. With the previous template, it sorta doesnt give clearly display these categories well. So yeah, I don't know, u can ask others if you want. --Zack2007 09:04, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

The problem with Bandaraya/Bandar Raya

Hi there. This is in relation to the contracted word Bandaraya. If you ask any BM teacher, they will say that Bandar Raya is the correct way to write, together with kereta api, sama ada, jalan raya, lebuh raya, etc. The old contracted word is no longer use, but many of the governmental organisation (like MBSA etc still dont convert to the new spelling. I think as a formality, we should make efforts to revert to the format laid out by DBP, (that is to separate the words). --Zack2007 12:26, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Just something to back up my point. News article. I propose that the word Bandaraya as in Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam, for example, should be retained as they have been spelled that way in the constitution, but for a normal usage, as in mottos and slogans, it should be changed into the correct proper spelling. No No. all the local council will stay at its original contracted version, Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam, Majlis Bandaraya Alor Star, etc. BUT, if it is in slogan, it should show the correct usage that is "Bandar raya", such as "Bandar raya bersejarah", "Bandar raya pintar". DBKL's official name in english is KL City Hall, for example in this government website. I think we should stick with the official name. If you'd like, u can make an article, and probably explain about this variant that is used in Malaysia (perhaps calling it as a unique case. :P ) --Zack2007 08:00, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Definition of Bumiputra.

yeah, somebody really did biased on almost every articles about Malaysia. The point is we dont know where on earth they find that thing, and Government of Malaysia did not start their NPOV ensyclopedia, thats why u cant find the definition and some wikipedia start some history rather than definition. So here it is, Im post-spm student, I got it from Buku panduan kemasukan ke institusi pengajian tinggi awam, here the original in Malay language:

1. Semenanjung
   • "Jika salah seorang ibu atau bapa calon adalah seorang Melayu yang beragama Islam/Orang Asli seperti mana yang ditakrifkan dalam Perkara 160 (2) Perlembagaan Persekutuan; maka anaknya adalah seorang Bumiputera".
2. Sabah
   • "Jika bapa calon adalah seorang Melayu yang beragama Islam/Peribumi sabah seperti mana yang ditakrifkan dalam Perkara 161A (6)(a) Perlembagaan Persekutuan; maka anaknya adalah dianggap seorang Bumiputera".
3. Sarawak
   • "Jika bapa dan ibu calon adalah seorang Peribumi Sarawak seperti mana yang ditakrifkan dalam Perkara 161A (6)(b) Perlembagaan Persekutuan; maka anaknya adalah dianggap seorang Bumiputera".

You may be right, but according to sentences above, like for example, "seperti mana yang ditakrifkan dalam Perkara 161A (6)(a) Perlembagaan Persekutuan" , which mean "as stated according to the definition in Article 161A (6) (a) of Federal Constitution", its clearly the definition is in the constitution.

Well, ofcouse, I myself not sure about "bapa calon adalah seorang Melayu yang beragama Islam/Peribumi sabah", I dont know why is it differ from each state, maybe its because each state has its owned unique constitution and in west Malaysia, they, on the other hand had has already centeralized the constitution. You are in the right direction. The only thing that is rather out of place is the arrow and Sandakan text. I don't recall maps pointing out specific areas using them. See Image:Woodlands locator map.png, Image:EnglandLondon.png, Image:Manhattan Highlight New York City Map Julius Schorzman.png and Image:Taipo-PositionWithinHKSAR.jpg for examples. The reason why I would rather not use the term "unofficially" is because there is generally no such provision outside of Islam (and primarily due to its status as a state religion) and Azalina did have a certificate of baptism issued by a legal authority under the Roman Catholic church. I can understand how it can be controversial but it's better to stick with the facts here.

Photo of Zion Cathedral in the LCMS Article

Hi again. Thanks for putting up a photo of KL's Lutheran Zion Cathedral on the Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Singapore (LCMS) article. Unfortunately, this cathedral is used by a different Lutheran denomination; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia. Even though the LCMS has a bishop, the title is mainly ceremonial rather than episcopal and the bishop's role is more akin to a Presiding bishop and therefore the denomination doesn't have a cathedral. Nonetheless, I'd like to save a reference to the photo, so I'll just comment it out from the article. Thanks again for your help. -- Bob K 20:15, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I did make a visit to the diocesan office a few weeks ago to try to get some background information but I was told to write in (?!) .. hehe. A request

Hi Kawaputra. I see you edit articles on Sabah. Could I ask you a favour? I have created several articles that relate to Sabah (where my grandparents lived from 1919 to 1951) and Sarawak (where they were interned in Batu Lintang camp during World War II); and have just made a page on Stephen R. Evans, an interesting Sabahan who authored a very useful book that I used in my research for the Batu Lintang page. Could I ask you to check over his page (and any others of mine that are relevant, such as Agnes Newton Keith if you have the time) for any howlers? My grandfather managed three rubber plantations, the main one at Kimanis and the others at Papar and Mawao for Guthrie (Malaysia). Both my grandparents survived the camp but never talked about it to me, although I have my grandmother's recollections that she wrote when she was in her 70s. Both my sisters have been to Kimanis to visit their old house - one day I'll get there, but I'm not sure if the house will still be standing ...! Jasper33 05:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Mawao, but I guess it wasn't (and still isn't) a very big place, hence the redlink! Here's a link about it. My mother was born in KK (Jesselton as it was at the time) in the Civil Hospital, but I think virtually everything in Jesselton/KK was destroyed in the war, so no chance of visiting that. She and her parents and her brother spent quite a bit of time on the beach at Tanjung Aru and Kinarut, judging by my old photos: more places on my list of places to visit! I've got some interesting photos of KK in the 30s and 40s, which I'll get round to uploading on to the KK page at some point, though it won't be soon as I'm a bit tied up with work. Rafflesia Forest Reserve

As you are from nearby, a photo of that Rafflesia Center would be a great addition to the article, as well as some more information (except the pure travel-guide information the article had before my rewrite). And if you'd also succeed to catch one blooming R. pricei I promise to write an article about that species :-) Especially since I could see a R. kerrii in Thailand earlier this year I am fascinated by these flowers, but I doubt I will be able to visit that park in the near future. andy 11:35, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

No need for hurry, but if you remember my photo request next time you're in your hometown it'd be great. I have checked on commons, it has none labeled R. pricei, but I still have to try to identify those unlabeled. The one I see in Thailand (R. kerrii is found in southern Thailand and northern peninsular Malaysia, also many species are only found on the Philippines) had no notable smell - I have now learned that the smell depends on species, age of the flower and time, some only smell during the night. andy 12:16, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Thank you for working on WikiProject Malaysia. It would be quite helpful to other Wikipedia editors if you would use the edit summary box at the bottom of the edit page when you make edits. For example, on 26 August 2007, you added WP Malaysia to the Talk:Bau, Sarawak page, but didn't include an edit summary. This may seem picky, but it is considered polite, some wikipedians say essential, to include edit summaries when editing Wikipedia articles. This is true whether adding content, correcting a typo, or suggesting a merger. As the Help page says: "An edit summary should strive to answer the question, "Why did you make this edit?". Providing an edit summary, even if the edit is minor, makes Wikipedia work better by quickly explaining to other users what your change was about." See Help:Edit summary. The edit summary appears in a number of places, for example you can see the history of the editing of an article on its history page. An answer (of sorts)

Hi Kawaputra. Hmm, well, I would use 'just now' to describe something in the recent past ('I saw the postman just now, but he didn't have any letters for me') but not the future, and I haven't heard people here in the UK using it in a future tense in the way that you describe. However, I can imagine that it could well be used to indicate events in the near future: that's the wonderful thing about language - its mutability. (eg. 'I'm going just now to the shops', perhaps - whereas I would say 'I'm going to the shops soon'). Sorry I couldn't be much more help. Kayumanggi

Hi! I saw your post on 23's talk page, I made a reply there. It's more detailed, but to give you an idea, "lahing kayumanggi" literally means "brown race" and was derived from a well-known folk legend. Hence, it's not the same as "Malay race", as we Filipinos would have used instead the term "lahing Malay". And yes, the phrase is well-known; some prominent writers have used this term, and it often crops up in some patriotic advertisements from time to time. Sorry I was a bit unclear about what I really meant :) "Lahing Kayumanggi" is intended as a literary device, much like how Americans make use of the names/phrases "Uncle Sam" and "the land of the free and the home of the brave" to refer to their country, or like Japan with "Land of the Rising Sun" (and, I guess, most countries also have similar monikers as well when referring to their country and/or people).

The phrase often comes up in literary contexts (most notably in poems and essays...one such writer I've read who I can remember using this once is the 1950s-1960s poet Amado Hernandez), but when Filipinos see the phrase "Lahing Kayumanggi" it refers to the Filipinos as a class---or, more precisely, to Filipinos regardless of their regional/ethnic origin, whether they be in the Philippines or abroad.

The folk legend that I was referring to is a story that I've been taught in our Filipino (language) subject in grade school more than once, and I've also seen this story in other textbooks as well. The premise of the story is that God (or at least the gods of whoever created the folk tale) created men by cooking them. Those that were "undercooked" ended up with skins too pale---these were assumed to be persons of Caucasian origins. Those that were "overcooked" ended up the other way around with overly dark skins---these were persons of African origins. And those that were "cooked just right" were the Filipinos. (As I've mentioned, I can't figure out where, say, persons of Arab descent and Chinese/Japanese/Korean descent fit in, it could be possible that whoever created this story haven't heard of them =P )

The "folk story", admittedly, is politically incorrect by modern standards, but since I was taught in school that it's just a folk legend, I cannot easily blame any specific author for coming up with such a biased story (for all I know, it could also be an invention by an ultra-patriotic textbook author).

In passing, however, let it be said that this folk legend can be considered as just one of possible sources of the phrase "Lahing Kayumanggi". I would even assume that this "folk legend" may, in fact, have been invented simply to justify the phrase's existence. It's just that the phrase often crops up in various places at various times that at this point in time it will be really difficult to point out where this phrase really came from, or which author first used this.

With regard to Phiippine languages and your own Bahasa...yes, there is a similarity, although Filipino languages, as it stand today, also borrow heavily from other languages, most notably from Spanish and (in the past century) English. It's safe to assume that these borrowings are a product of our country's history. With regard to our languages and the Bahasa languages, geography is a factor, though I'm not aware of how similar both classes of languages are. I'm not an expert in linguistics, but a fellow Filipino Wikipedian, Chris S. is himself a linguistics professor and (IMO) an expert in Philippine languages (his linguistics blog was nominated in an annual blogging awards competition in the Philippines), so I believe he'd be more than happy to give you expert answers about the relationship between Philippine languages and the Bahasa languages :) --- Tito Pao 11:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Malaysia project collaboration

What the project desperately needs is a leader to get things moving. Its not me, since I just intended to get the project started. For the Indonesia project User:Merbabu has the informal role of choosing the next collaboration and notifying everyone on their talk pages. Would be great if you could take on this role for the Malaysia project! The Indonesia project has been successful enough over to time to help push Indonesia, and a number of other articles, to FA standard! If you help get things moving, maybe the Malaysia project can be as successful. (Caniago 00:20, 27 September 2007 (UTC))

I wouldn't be disheartened by the number of editors the Malaysia project has - the Indonesia project started out very small too. For the Indonesia project there were only about 4 editors at the beginning and even now the number of regular editors to the project hasn't changed very much. Almost all of them aren't even Indonesian. I also think being a new editor isn't a problem. The guy who started the Indonesia project I think was newer to Wikipedia than you currently are. Malaysia Air Map

Excellent work, Kawaputra. It is a good effort in drawing the map. Yes, separate it into individual file, but bear in mind, routes change quickly over time, and you should be aware of that. Plus, if the routes do in fact change, you should be able to redraw it. Is that possible? Wish I have the skill and time to draw the routes. Good job!

Another thing, the third map, instead of Domestic air routes in Malaysia, can you please change it into "domestic air routes served by turboprops in Malaysia? Oh, it would be nice to break up the three operators' routes (Firefly, MASwings, and Berjaya Air), so that we can put the map individually in their respective article page. I hope my comments dont bother you so much. :D

Thanks for uploading it. whenever you have time, if you can, i hope you can change the colour of the routes for MASwings, firefly, and berjaya air.. they should be in a different route line to AirAsia and Malaysia airlines, so it wont be confused esp when they are put in one file.
