Does Wikipedia have a page that teaches an editor how to create a User Box?

Does Wikipedia have a page that teaches an editor how to create a User Box? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:52, 14 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Does Wikipedia:Userboxes#Design: How to construct the box help? --Floquenbeam (talk) 00:12, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. But, no, not really. That presumes that someone already knows how to create a box ... and it then offers specific ways to format said box. I need to start from scratch, not knowing the first thing about how to create a box. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 04:23, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Help:A quick guide to templates (or Help:Template for a more in-depth view) might help understand those instructions. Eman235/talk 04:55, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
I also gave a brief explanation on your talk page, the explanation took up quite a bit of space so I didn't want to place it here. OkayKenji (talk page) 06:22, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Basic Userbox Help

edit

Hi! Saw your question at the WP:Help Desk. I'm not that experienced with user boxes either...but here's how to make a basic userbox using the template.

Wikitext Outcome Some explanation
{{userbox|
|border-c = #000000
|border-s = 2
|id = Text for narrower box
|id-c = #ff00ff
|info = What you want to see in the bigger box
|info-c = #ffeeff
}}
Text for narrower boxWhat you want to see in the bigger box
This is vary basic but,...
  • border-c and border-s The color and thickness of the border respectively. For help on HTML colors see [[Web colors#HTML color names
  • id Any text you want in the smaller box. id-c The color of the smaller box
  • info Any text you want in the bigger box. info-c The color of the bigger box
  • Attribution to/adapted from (did not copy paste) from Template:Userbox, find more info there.

Hope this helps! Is basically what was on the pages the other editors mentioned. OkayKenji (talk page) 06:24, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@OkayKenji: Thanks. Yes, this is extremely helpful. Thank you! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:53, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@OkayKenji: Also: Do you know how to make that "rectangle" as just one full rectangle ... without separating the smaller left side from the larger right side? Is there a way to make the User Box as just one, full rectangle? Sort of like the box I created below? In the box below, I "cheated" by taking the left side and making it the same exact color as the right side. I'd like a User Box to look like this, in appearance. But, have the text be visible (perhaps, centered) in the full rectangle ... not have the rectangle split into a left and right side. Is this possible? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:54, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

User Box question

Template:Userbox says:
| id-w          = <!--id box width in pixels (default=45)-->
Use | id-w = 0:
This userbox has id-w = 0
id must be omitted or empty for this to work. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:19, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

How to make a User Box bigger

edit

How do I make a User Box bigger ... meaning, more width and more height? Here is the "code" below that I am using.

{{userbox| | border-c = #000000 | border-s = 2 | id = {{nbsp}} | id-c = #ffeeff | id-w = 0 | info = My text is here. | info-c = #ffeeff }}

Which produces this:

 My text is here.

So, what if, say, I want the Box to be twice as wide and twice as tall? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:45, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have not tested it out yet but adding |id-w = and |id-h = should change the width of the id box (left box) respectively. Their parameters are the number of pixels you want so, |id-w = 1000 would make a box with a width of 1000 OkayKenji (talk page) 00:21, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
However, I just noticed that may not work for chaining the width/height of the "info" side (the side that says "My text is here.", "won't work with userbox with just one full rectangle"). OkayKenji (talk page) 00:32, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's not possible to change the width, as the module always sets the total width to be 240 pixels. I think the height expands to fit the contents. -- John of Reading (talk) 03:37, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes. The width is fixed to make userboxes line up in columns. If you really want a different width on your own userpage then you can use Special:ExpandTemplates to find code like width:236px and wrap the userbox in {{replace|...|width:236px|width:472px}}:
 My text is here.
Don't do this on userboxes meant for transclusion by others, and generally don't use {{replace}} to manipulate template output outside your own userspace. It's an unstable method. For example, if border-s is changed then width:236px is also changed. The width is 240 − 2×border-s, but this could also change if the default infobox design is changed. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:49, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! How about the height? Can that be manually increased (i.e., while not being contingent on adapting the necessary height to "fit" any exetnded text itself) ... ? In other words, can the height be manually increased, independent of whatever text is necessary to accommodate? Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:53, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Template:Userbox#Usage shows id-h. The default height is doubled with | id-h = 90. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:13, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Different colors: verbal names versus 6-digit code numbers

edit
H E L L O

The above "box" contains three different colors ... "solid grey" ... "navy" ... and "white". How can I find the 6-digit code numbers for these colors, instead of using the verbal descriptions of the colors? For example, I can't find "solid grey" anywhere. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:57, 19 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Joseph A. Spadaro: solid is not part of the color name, it is property of the border. Other options could be dotted or dashed, for example. [1]. Color codes may be found here: Web_colors#HTML_color_names RudolfRed (talk) 22:06, 19 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Changing font

edit

In a User Box, can one change the font? I was looking at this page (Template:Userbox) ... and I don't see any field that allows for a change of font. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 00:19, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

A font can be set as part of the id or info parameter like in other wikitext: Here is Cursive. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:55, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Here is Cursive
Thanks. Is there a page on Wikipedia -- or on the Internet -- that has a list of the available fonts and their "official names" that can be used within the template? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:14, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps Wikipedia:Typography might be a good resource or https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_websafe_fonts.asp as an outside source, but there may be more. OkayKenji (talk page) 04:13, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Script fonts that "work" in CSS and in Wikipedia

edit

Hello. I am trying to find a list of "script" types of fonts, that will "work" in CSS and in Wikipedia. Is there some list available? Here on Wikipedia ...? Or on the Internet ...? Or do I have to do a "trial and error" on each specific font to see if it will work? I am referring to fonts like these ---> List of script typefaces. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:01, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

The font code is passed directly to your browser so it's the browser or operating system and not Wikipedia which decides what works. It varies which fonts a browser can show but there are fallbacks so the browser will still show the text with another font. You have freedom in your userspace but see MOS:FONTFAMILY for articles. You can try searching for web-safe fonts. There are many Google hits but I don't know which to recommend. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:01, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. OK, so which fonts are "usable" depends not on Wikipedia, but on my browser (i.e., Mozilla Firefox). So -- back to my original question -- to see if a font is "usable" (for my browser), do I have to go through each font, one by one, and do a "trial and error"? Or is there some easier and quicker way to see which fonts are available to me and, hence, which I can select from? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:13, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
If it's just for you then see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-fonts-and-colors-websites-use#w_changing-font. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:28, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@PrimeHunter: Thanks. I looked at that. When I did so, there was a (rather) long list of font names. You are saying that each of those fonts -- in that long list -- is available to me, through Mozilla Firefox ... correct? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:42, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, they should be available. You can select them in Firefox to use at sites like Wikipedia which don't declare a font but use the browser's default. Or you can make code for them in Wikipedia to see them here. I don't know whether some of them require a variation of the listed name. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:10, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Great. Thanks for all the help! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:00, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
