Mikoto Umezu, Marin Matsushita and other shogi articles

edit

Hi IonGrey. If you want to take a crack at creating new articles about Mikoto Umezu and Marin Matsushita, you're welcome to do so. Umezu is already offcially a women's professional and Matsushita will officially become one on August 1 (maybe wait until then for that article). You can use same format as used for other the women's professional articles, but you can also do something tweaking as well. I would suggest though that you try to find as much significant coverage as possible in mainstream Japanese media source to support whatever content you source from the JSA website. The shogi writers for Mainichi and Asahi usually write up something about new pros and local newspapers also tend to have an article or two as well about locals who turn pro like this and this Kumamoto Shimbun article about Matsushita. Sometimes you can also use the same sources cited in Japanese Wikipedia articles, though you have to be careful to avoid the blogs and other user-generated sources that sometimes end up being cited on Japanese Wikipedia. Japanese Wikipedia's standards don't seem to be rigorous or at least not as rigorously enforced when it comes to source quality.

There also need to be stand-alone articles created about the Women's major titles at some point. I created one for Women's Meijin (shogi), but haven't had much time to work on the others. If you feel up to it, then feel free to work on those as well. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:27, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Marchjuly, I'm very sorry for the late response. I haven't had a lot of time lately to contribute, but I'd like to continue doing as much as possible working on shogi articles. I'm not sure when I can get to the articles you mentioned, and I'll try to still be around from time to time. Thank you for your contributions and suggestions and I'm sorry for not being of much help this month. IonGrey (talk) 03:53, 19 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Nagisa Fujimoto

edit

Thank you for starting a draft for Fujimoto. I had been planning to create articles for the two new 4-dans, but got busy with other stuff. The only suggestion I have is to tweak the date format used for the promotion history section. The one I originally adopted when creating these articles was a bit obscure and not really an acceptable one for English Wikipedia per MOS:DATEFORMAT. So, I've been slowly working my way through the various articles and tweaking the formats of that particular section in each. I've only got the 9-dans and pretty much all of the women professionals left to go, but any newly created articles should probably avoid the old format that I had chosen. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:35, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Noted, thank you for the information! IonGrey (talk) 21:54, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
No problem. The mistake was mine to begin with. For reference, Fujimoto's Shogi Hub profile page can be found here. There's also an interview he gave found here as well as some other possible reliable sources that you might be able to use found here, here and here. Often the national media coverage of new 4-dans at first tends to be general pieces that try and give equal coverage to each person promoted; so, sources can often be used in multiple articles. After a bit of time has passed, you start to find more coverage specific to a certain player. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:07, 6 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
When it comes to drafts, you sort of have to keep WP:G13 in mind and make sure you don't let too much time pass before editing them. Drafts that appear to have become stagnant or abandoned will be speedily deleted if six months or more pass since they were last edited. You don't need to work on them every day, but just enough to show others (e.g. patrollers and administrators) see that someone is still making improvements. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:17, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
As you probably noticed below, your draft was declined by AfC. I went and added some more citations and a little bit more content, but you could probably expand the "Early life" section a bit by adding some content about Fujimoto's results as an amateur player since he received some media coverage due to his young age. Some of this can be found in the Japanese Wikipedia article about him, but you don't need to translate that per se. You can just look at the sources and just summarize them in your own word. A little bit of that plus the sources I added should be enough to push you over the AfC threshold if you submit resubmit your draft. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:14, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Yūya Saitō

edit

Hi IonGrey. Just letting you know that I added a couple of sources and an external link to Draft:Yūya Saitō. Generally, it's a god idea to try and have some WP:SECONDARY sources as citations, particularly to major newspapers or other publication, because it can help establish notability. You can also continue working on the draft while you're waiting for it to be reviewed by AfC. The external link I added is an interview, but it may have some value as a citation as well as long you use it to support things Saitō says about himself per WP:ABOUTSELF. So, it can probably be used as a citation for anything says about his background as long as it's not too far out of a statement. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:13, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

This and this are some other articles that you probably can use as sources. There are probably more out there as well since it's been a few months since he's turned professional and most new professional more of their early days appearing at PR or local events than they actually do playing. This is particularly the case for the October pros because the new shogi year doesn't start until the following April and most of the major title tournament preliminary rounds have already begun play. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:25, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
