Adoption school
Hey, User:Howicus
I know i know, as if i couldn't be anymore annoying about the adoption school. Apologies. However, you ask me to revert edits and find prime examples of vandalism and good faith but unhelpful edits. Problem is, that's impossible. Thousands upon thousands of editors and Wikipedians are always doing that by the second. I don't think i will be able to do that. Also, i completed the vandalism section but i don't see passed.
Thanks, --Luis Santos24 (talk) 20:44, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Louis Santos24! If you don't plan on doing a lot of anti-vandal work, we could just skip that section. It can be hard to find vandalism to revert, yeah. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 23:19, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
Hey User:Howicus. I actually do plan on it but as you said it's hard for that hands on stuff, just wondering what you had an idea to do, the wikipedia adventure highly interferes with this but i DO want to graduate this.
Thanks, --Luis Santos24 (talk) 15:05, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I find vandalism by repeatedly refreshing Special:RecentChanges or the user contributions for new accounts page. I'm usually able to find some fairly quickly. You could try looking at different times of day; the number of anti-vandal editors around varies. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 15:17, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
User:Howicus Most of my activity i end up doing on Recent Changes is encouraging hundreds of IP's to make accounts and welcoming new users. I've made my 17th article recently and i gave and recieved my first Barnstar today! You asked if there was a section i wanted to skip, i was wondering if we could do that for Five Pillars, it and a whole lot of other things were covered in the Wikipedia Adventure.
Thanks, --Luis Santos24 (Have a good day) 01:43, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

In Christianity, homosexuality is a sin. That has been the standard for centuries, and the current confusion on this subject by some militant folks has not changed that. In both the Old Testament, and in the New Testament, the plain teachings are that it is a sin. I hope the "Sodom and Gomorrah" experience clearly explains God's view on the issue. THEREFORE, to so that one is a Christian (Christ-like, or a Christ follower), AND to advocate an sinful practice (which homosexuality is one of many) is illogical and untruthful. Again, this newscaster claims to be a Christian will always be the correct answer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by M.sommars (talk • contribs) 17:06, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Can you copy an entire text from a corporate website and paste it as an article on Wikipedia?
I edited an article that had this problem, so I fixed it with new details and sources. Today, an experienced editor restored to an older version that repeated an entire text from a corporate website and paste it as an article. The article has 6 sentences. Three sentences are original and other three are from the corporate website. Here's the link for the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakthi_TV | This article has 3 sentences from it's corporate website: http://www.capitalmaharaja.com/index.php/our-companies/mtv-channel.html Rdelano7 (talk) 23:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC) Rdelano7 (talk) 23:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, Rdelano7. I'd suggest you remove the copied sentences, and say that they're a copyright violation in the edit summary. I don't think the editor who reverted you realized that you were removing copyrighted content. Any content you want to add, I'd suggest doing in a separate edit. Also, unfortunately one of your sources, [1], is actually just a re-print of a press release from YuppTV (which I can't directly link because it's on the blacklist; it's the first result here. So, it's not independent, and you should not use it as a source. Hope this helps! Howicus (Did I mess up?) 00:34, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor update
- This note is only delivered to English Wikipedia subscribers of the visual editor's newsletter.
The location of the visual editor's preference has been changed from the "Beta" tab to the "Editing" section of your preferences on this wiki. The setting now says Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta. This aligns en.wiki with almost all the other WMF wikis; it doesn’t mean the visual editor is complete, or that it is no longer “in beta phase” though.
This action has not changed anything else for editors: it still honours editors’ previous choices about having it on or off; logged-out users continue to only have access to wikitext; the “Edit” tab is still after the “Edit source” one. You can learn more at the visual editor’s talk page.
We don’t expect this to cause any glitches, but in case your account no longer has the settings that you want, please accept our apologies and correct it in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences. Thank you for your attention, Elitre (WMF) -16:32, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

You have no right to delete my claim that Hassan Rouhani was one of the hostage takers during the Iranian hostage crisis. You simply don't have any evidence to rebut my plausible claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freedomsforiran (talk • contribs) 22:30, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

MOS:IDENTITY is being revisited: How should Wikipedia refer to transgender individuals before and after their transition?
You are being contacted because you contributed to a recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY that closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.
Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The first addresses how the Manual of Style should instruct editors to refer to transgender people in articles about themselves (which name, which pronoun, etc.). The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome. Buffalo State College
Hello, I noticed you changed the article name of Buffalo State College to just Buffalo State. Buffalo State College is what it's most known by and an official short name. The wiki article has been fixed, with consenus from another editor. . Take a look at the official name guidelines. [1][2]
Now having the page named just "Buffalo State" is rather confusing. Buffalo State is short for Buffalo State College but outside the article page you wouldn't know that it's referring to a college. I'm hoping you can change it back to Buffalo State College as it was previously. Thanks 2620:CC:8000:213:175:99BE:FC1C:BE2F (talk) 02:35, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Before I'd be willing to move it back I'd like to see discussion on the talk page, explaining why "Buffalo State" is not a good title, and getting consensus from more than two editors. Also, please stop calling a good-faith editor a vandal. Vandalism requires ill intent. With that, I'm off to bed for the night. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 04:01, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Where was the consenus when you changed the article from its original name? Buffalo State College fits better, and makes sense when talking about the college elsewhere throughout Wikipedia. Buffalo State just sounds confusing when listed by itself say on a page about New York/Buffalo or anywhere else. Plus Buffalo State College (official short name) is a version of Buffalo State , but reminds the reader who are unfamiliar that it's a college. I'm not the only one to call it vandalism, I was just pointing out the fact that he kept editing the offical name and putting false information in the article, which he fixed so it's all good now , not trying to get into this whole wiki drama thing. So hopefully you'll change it back to Buffalo State College, and then get consenus first to change it to Buffalo State, but my votes still on Buffalo State College , as it always was. Thanks and have a goodnight 2620:CC:8000:213:175:99BE:FC1C:BE2F (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News #5—2015
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs, added new features, and made some small design changes. They post weekly status reports on mediawiki.org. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages like Japanese and Arabic, making it easier to edit on mobile devices, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.
Recent improvements
Educational features: The first time you use the visual editor, it now draws your attention to the Link and ⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽ tools. When you click on the tools, it explains why you should use them. (T108620) Alongside this, the welcome message for new users has been simplified to make editing more welcoming. (T112354) More in-software educational features are planned.
Links: It is now easier to understand when you are adding text to a link and when you are typing plain text next to it. (T74108, T91285) The editor now fully supports ISBN, PMID or RFC numbers. (T109498, T110347, T63558) These "magic links" use a custom link editing tool.
Uploads: Registered editors can now upload images and other media to Commons while editing. Click the new tab in the "Insert Images and media" tool. You will be guided through the process without having to leave your edit. At the end, the image will be inserted. This tool is limited to one file at a time, owned by the user, and licensed under Commons's standard license. For more complex situations, the tool links to more advanced upload tools. You can also drag the image into the editor. This will be available in the wikitext editor later.
Mobile: Previously, the visual editor was available on the mobile Wikipedia site only on tablets. Now, editors can use the visual editor on any size of device. (T85630) Edit conflicts were previously broken on the mobile website. Edit conflicts can now be resolved in both wikitext and visual editors. (T111894) Sometimes templates and similar items could not be deleted on the mobile website. Selecting them caused the on-screen keyboard to hide with some browsers. Now there is a new "Delete" button, so that these things can be removed if the keyboard hides. (T62110) You can also edit table cells in mobile now.
Rich editing tools: You can now add and edit sheet music in the visual editor. (T112925) There are separate tabs for advanced options, such as MIDI and Ogg audio files. (T114227 and T113354) When editing formulæ and other blocks, errors are shown as you edit. It is also possible to edit some types of graphs; adding new ones, and support for new types, will be coming.
On the English Wikipedia, the visual editor is now automatically available to anyone who creates an account. The preference switch was moved to the normal location, under Special:Preferences.
Future changes
You will soon be able to switch from the wikitext to the visual editor after you start editing. (T49779) Previously, you could only switch from the visual editor to the wikitext editor. Bi-directional switching will make possible a single edit tab. (T102398) This project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, similar to the system already used on the mobile website. The "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time.

- Share your ideas and ask questions at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback. This feedback page uses Flow for discussions.
- Can you read and type in Korean or Japanese? Language engineer David Chan needs people who know which tools people use to type in some languages. If you speak Japanese or Korean, you can help him test support for these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help, and report it on Phabricator (Korean - Japanese) or on Wikipedia (Korean - Japanese).
- Local admins can set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki. If you need help, then please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.
- The weekly task triage meetings are open to volunteers. Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration, though. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the main VisualEditor project with the bug.

Hello Howicus, I was just adding information that both those sources say. I just thought it would be helpful to make a total summary of Glasgow's ethnic groups and add a clear referenced set of percentages.Roscomoner (talk) 19:13, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
- I think you didn't mean to revert what you did, Roscomoner. The paragraph you re-added was this, an unsourced paragraph about a guy named "John Carty". You recently changed something on the Salute page and I just wanted to let you know that you are incorrect (not trying to sound rude sorry if it sounds rude)it is the right hand that the U.S. military salutes with. Mobile search summary
Thanks for answering my question on my talk page. But I don't think that the "mobile search summary" is coming from the article. For example, enter "gunpowder" in the mobile search page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page#/search, and you will see "Gunpowder Plot" as one of the hits, with only the word "event" as the summary:
- Gunpowder Plot
- event
But nowhere on the Gunpowder Plot page do I see the one-word summary "event." Do you know where the mobile search summary is coming from? Phlar (talk) 04:13, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

- VPT is a treasure trove! It turns out the mobile search description comes from wikidata, e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1790872. Go figure! Phlar (talk) 17:18, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, that makes sense. Good to hear that you figured it out. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 19:27, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Southern Heritage Classic logo
Thanks for uploading the file. But on the Southern Heritage Classic page the logo displays the physical size of the previous logo. Is there any way to fix that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fabdesign (talk • contribs) 21:25, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Fabdesign. Are you wanting to make the image larger? I actually uploaded it small on purpose; as it's a non-free logo, it must meet Wikipedia's Non-free content criteria. Specifically, this section says that non-free images should be kept small. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 21:45, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Adopt me?
Hello,
I am a person that is interested in computer games and military history such as WWII. You have written that you also approve of these subjects, so I'd like you to adopt me
Dat GuyWiki (talk) 20:26, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, as I told Lululemonlove, above, I'm going to be traveling, so I may not be around much for the next week or so. If you want to be adopted soon, try one of the users here. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 22:12, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Looking to be Adopted!
Dear Howicus,
I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm looking to be adopted by you or someone like you. I would like to know if you have any suggestions as to how I can get more out of Wikipedia and how I can identify which pages are most in need of editing? I also wonder if you have any insight into where new editors (see, I don't even now if that is the correct term or if I just say "user"?) go wrong in editing pages. I am a bit nervous about doing something wrong so I have just being doing small edits so far.
I guess in short I am looking to avoid any pitfalls that might detract from the validity of Wikipedia. I also want to contribute a positive, trustworthy presence to the community.
Thanks in advance! Lululemonlove (talk) 00:05, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Lululemonlove, welcome to Wikipedia! Normally I'd be happy to adopt you, but I'll be traveling soon, and as a result I'll be pretty busy. If you want to find an adopter quickly, I'd suggest trying the list here. To answer a couple of your questions, though, the Community portal has lists of articles that need editing with links to more. Also, "editor" is a perfectly good term, and it's what most people use. Finally, don't be too worried about getting into trouble. In general, be bold and edit. If you make a good-faith mistake, the worst that will happen is that someone will tell you the right way to do it. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 00:25, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you so much - all of that is very, very helpful and I will take it all to heart. I hope your travels are pleasant and safe and thanks again for the guidance and assistance. Much appreciated. Lululemonlove (talk) 21:29, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Military History Wikiproject nomination
Hello User:Howicus, The nominations for the Military History Wikiproject Newcomer of the Year is approaching. I was wondering if you would nominate me? I already prepared a statement but you can make your own if you wish.
Cheers! --The Haze Master (talk) 11:04, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
- Hi again Luis Santos24. I'm afraid I don't really have the time to write a good nomination, sorry. Perhaps you could ask someone else? Howicus (Did I mess up?) 17:45, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Smithson
Hi! I see you've prodded a few of these fantasies. Unfortunately there's really a mass of clean-up work to be done there; I feel it should be co-ordinated in some way, but we don't seem to have a mechanism for that. On those three articles: both Francesco Natoli and the Orioles family definitely existed (I can supply sources if you like), they just didn't do all the stuff or have all the names ascribed to them. I don't believe either come close to satisfying our notability requirements. I did wonder, though, about the Battle of the Three Mountains; it obviously was not a major engagement (more Smithson puffery), but it definitely seems to have taken place, and to have a certain significance because it was the first victory after Caporetto; I found mentions in several sources. Thoughts? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:37, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
- I see your point about the Battle of Three Mountains, Justlettersandnumbers. It didn't occur to me to search for the Italian name of the battle. So yes, there might be something there...feel free to de-PROD the article if you like, though I don't have the Italian skills to write it myself. Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs and expanded the mathematics formula tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for languages such as Japanese and Arabic, and providing rich-media tools for formulæ, charts, galleries and uploading.
Recent improvements
You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing.
The LaTeX mathematics formula editor has been significantly expanded. (T118616) You can see the formula as you change the LaTeX code. You can click buttons to insert the correct LaTeX code for many symbols.
Future changes
The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab, like the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as a cookie for logged-out users and as an account preference for logged-in editors. Logged-in editors will be able to set a default editor in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences in the drop-down menu about "Editing mode:".
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the following Wikipedias in early 2016: Amharic, Buginese, Min Dong, Cree, Manx, Hakka, Armenian, Georgian, Pontic, Serbo-Croatian, Tigrinya, Mingrelian, Zhuang, and Min Nan. (T116523) Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. The developers would like to know how well it works. Please tell them what kind of computer, web browser, and keyboard you are using.
In 2016, the feedback pages for the visual editor on many Wikipedias will be redirected to mediawiki.org. (T92661)
Testing opportunities
- Please try the new system for the single edit tab on test2.wikipedia.org. You can edit while logged out to see how it works for logged-out editors, or you can create a separate account to be able to set your account's preferences. Please share your thoughts about the single edit tab system at the feedback topic on mediawiki.org or sign up for formal user research (type "single edit tab" in the question about other areas you're interested in). The new system has not been finalized, and your feedback can affect the outcome. The team particularly wants your thoughts about the options in Special:Preferences. The current choices in Special:Preferences are:
- Remember my last editor,
- Always give me the visual editor if possible,
- Always give me the source editor, and
- Show me both editor tabs. (This is the current state for people using the visual editor. None of these options will be visible if you have disabled the visual editor in your preferences at that wiki.)

Question
I was just wondering why you deleted the entire "In Popular Culture" section for the Dad's Root Beer page. Is that kind of information frowned upon now? Neuroguy2 (talk) 06:47, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, Neuroguy2. I removed that particular "In Popular Culture" section because it consisted of one Bug Bunny parody and three cases where an ad for the soda is seen in the background of a movie. In my view, those are all so minor that they count as an indiscriminate collection of information. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 18:33, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, I was just curious as to why it was removed. You are much more experienced at editing Wikipedia pages than I am. I now understand, and thank you for the reference you provided. I've just seen other entries for such things, so I had added a couple of my own and wondered if that had been a no-no since it was removed. Thought it'd be interesting for people to have a reference to a well-known product of the time and see how it was included in films of the era to add realism to the sets - instead of "fake" ads. I was just going to do the same for huge posters advertising British products (most still used today) in the film Man_Hunt_(1941_film) when I noticed my previous contributions had been removed. I don't want to be the cause of "clutter" on pages and make work for people like you who maintain the site so well. Cheers! Neuroguy2 (talk) 04:14, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for January 14
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Benito de Soto, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Portuguese and Corunna. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

01:02:38, 30 January 2016 review of submission by DmitryPopovRU
Hello Howicus. I have added several new sources as the subject of this article is having another TV show play here in NZ. See [2] and [3]. When this show has played in NZ this Sunday I will also add this as a source. I don't understand how this article can't be notable now? The sources have been added to the page for almost 2 years now. I also found an article on the Daily Mirror, but I know that this is not regarded a reliable source. See [4]
Thanks Howicus. I will keep improving the article and I hope that soon this article will be notable. Thanks --DmitryPopovRU (talk) 01:02, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Elmira
you edited the section on prisoner release at Elmira. My fathers great grandfather was a prisoner there and when they closed, they did not give every prisoner a train ticket as is stated in that section. They just released many of them with nothing. They were forced to walk home, despite the fact that many were terribly ill and malnourished. He made it as far as Virginia where he succumbed on the side of the road. I just think that the section shouldn't be wrapped up in a nice bow. I'm definitely not a rebel fan and happily reside in the northeast, but history is history and shouldn't be prettied up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.171.185.43 (talk) 13:46, 3 February 2016
- Hello to the person at 166.171.185.43. My contribution to the article was limited to a simple link correct. But, I'll take a look at the train ticket claim. Thanks for pointing it out. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 20:25, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Indic, and Han scripts, and improving the single edit tab interface.
Recent changes
You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing. This function is available to nearly all editors at most wikis except the Wiktionaries and Wikisources.
Many local feedback pages for the visual editor have been redirected to mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.
You can now re-arrange columns and rows in tables, as well as copying a row, column or any other selection of cells and pasting it in a new location.
The formula editor has two options: you can choose "Quick edit" to see and change only the LaTeX code, or "Edit" to use the full tool. The full tool offers immediate preview and an extensive list of symbols.
Future changes
The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. This is similar to the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as an account preference for logged-in editors, and as a cookie for logged-out users. Logged-in editors will have these options in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences:
- Remember my last editor,
- Always give me the visual editor if possible,
- Always give me the source editor, and
- Show me both editor tabs. (This is the state for people using the visual editor now.)
The visual editor uses the same search engine as Special:Search to find links and files. This search will get better at detecting typos and spelling mistakes soon. These improvements to search will appear in the visual editor as well.
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at most "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers would like to know how well the visual editor works in your language. They particularly want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect the following languages: Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Thai, Aramaic and others.
Let's work together
- Please try out the newest version of the single edit tab on test2.wikipedia.org. You may need to restore the default preferences (at the bottom of test2wiki:Special:Preferences) to see the initial prompt for options. Were you able to find a preference setting that will work for your own editing? Did you see the large preferences dialog box when you started editing an article there?
- Can you read and type in Korean, Arabic, Japanese, Indic, or Han scripts? Language engineer David Chan needs help from people who often type in these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help. Report your results on wiki (Korean – Japanese – all languages).
