Welcome and introduction edit

Hi, Hawaii Samurai. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person by golly! And this real person (that would be me), wants to say welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you've made an account! Thanks for joining; you're on your way to making some great contributions.

Because I've noticed you've just joined, I wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. Any questions, nothing is too silly (we've heard them all). The tips below should help you begin editting. Best of luck! JoeSmack Talk 06:53, 10 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yessss! You made an account! Awesome!
  • Anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people. Besides that, you shouldn't feel nervous or anything about a good-willed contribution. If you're concerned, talk to us.
  • When you're ready, start your first article using the Article Wizard. You don't HAVE to use it, but for your first article it really helps. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references. If you'd like more guidance, you guessed it, talk to us.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

P.S. If you just feel like poking around, Wikipedia:Help is a good place to start. :)

Yep! Hi there! I see you've been making some great edits! Anything I can help you with? JoeSmack Talk 06:59, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hey now! I see your interest in Hawaii and its firey past. First off, if you have personally owned images from the 1895 Counter-Revolution in Hawaii and want to upload them to wikipedia, that'd be awesome! That's something of an intermediate difficulty, but I could certainly help you with the steps to do that. Secondly, I see you've done a great job in the authoring of the nascent Statehood Day Takeover (Hawaii) article. Some suggestions for that - first off you need to expand those refs a bit. Just saying the name of the news paper isn't quite good enough. Wikipedia:Citation_templates will have the appropriate template for a newspaper, just fill in as much info (page/author/date etc) as you can with it. Make sure the sources are reliable (Wikipedia:Reliable sources). Also, how about some sections? This seems both recent and not unprecedented, so how about a section called 'History', 'Time line', 'Impact', 'Aftermath', 'Criticisms', etc? I bet you can flush stuff like that out.
I'm actually about to go to bed, so if you have further questions or anything really, you can leave it on my talk page and I can get back to you tomorrow morning. Alternately, you can join the help channel any time you want here and get help there too (they have people from more than one time zone staffing it, it's midnight here in California :-) ). But you are making a great start as a Wikipedian and it looks like you are learning the ropes quite quick! Great work! JoeSmack Talk 07:38, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: United_States_Invasion_of_Hawaii edit

Good morning! Firstly, the photos, if the book is copyrighted you can't just scan it and use it on wikipedia unfortunately - they have to be photos YOU'VE taken (with a couple of exceptions we don't need to get into) otherwise it is illegal.

Now, United_States_Invasion_of_Hawaii is seemingly somewhat of a controversial topic. I can see from Grover Cleveland's article, his section on foreign policy that indeed this stuff happened, but my main concern is both reliable sources and neutrality (both of which are planks of Wikipedia's ethos). See Wikipedia:Guidelines_for_controversial_articles. I know it is not actually THAT controversial, but best to heir on the side of caution.

You're off to a great start with some books (i see you're using the cite templates, nice job). I would actually start by going over to Grover's section on the topic and basically copy that whole section refs and all and use that to flush out this article. In addition, Grover's article is sourced like crazy, and you can use those refs. As for neutrality, the name of the article may have to change. It doesn't seem so neutral, can you think of a more neutral title? Hawaiian attempted annexation of 1893? Something like that? After you're done we can add a lead in from Grover's article to here (using this) and help ensconce your work in Wikipedia. JoeSmack Talk 16:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

United States Invasion of Hawaii edit

Ok, I'm back. One thing I want to mention is, if you create articles that aren't quite ready, a good place to start them is in you user space. For example, United States Invasion of Hawaii would be just fine in User:Hawaii Samurai/United States Invasion of Hawaii, but in main space, it lacks inline citations and reads like a POV fork. Now, we can agree on the circumstances and the relative accuracy of the information, but the title? Which sources support it? Viriditas (talk) 14:23, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm not yet convinced that there ever was a "United States Invasion of Hawaii", even on paper. Could you show me the exact source material for it? Even if it was proposed, I can't see a possible reason for having an article about a proposal that consists of less than a paragraph. Clearly, we have other topics that this can be merged into. Therefore, I have merged it into opposition to the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a needed topic that has not yet been covered and can serve to split off some of the information in the overthrow series and expand it here. Hi! At the moment I'm on my phone internetting in an airport, so I'm going from the top my head. I know that using any photos produced by the federal government are kosher (see Fort Hood shooting's images, last example I ran into). I'm thinking this may fall under the purview of military photos. I would also check any big military hsitory article on wiki, or even ask the wikiproject on military history's talk page (that is one of the most active projects around). Speedy deletion nomination of Conservative Party (Hawaii) edit

You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Conservative Party (Hawaii) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.  Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 14:20, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Serial Killer (Hawaii) edit

A tag has been placed on Serial Killer (Hawaii) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. wiooiw (talk) 09:43, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Don't be so hard on yourself edit

There's always going to be a learning curve. I think I see what's going on with the book cover. First of all, it does appear that both the book and the image are in the public domain, but this cover was republished by the University of Hawaii and is copyrighted on their webpage.[1] I've run into this problem before, and I was told by at least one Wikipedia copyright wonk to "ignore" the copyright notice, but that doesn't go over so well with Commons, so we should let the image get deleted for now. You might be able to track down the actual archival image and use that instead, however, you can write a fair use exemption. Another thing: You uploaded the image as a gif instead of as a jpeg, and you uploaded it to Commons instead of Wikipedia. If you're unsure about the copyright status of an image, you can either ask first or upload it to Wikipedia instead of Commons. Commons is only for free images. Speedy deletion nomination of Women’s Army Volunteer Corp edit

A tag has been placed on Women’s Army Volunteer Corp, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Moreover, please add more verifiable sources, not only 3rd party sources. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. liquidlucktalk 03:15, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about the delay. Most of the Hawaii Republican Party article just seems to be a baseless personal essay. It is really rather ridiculous. I'm sorry if some Republicans have behaved poorly in your presence but keep in mind those are a few people out of around 100 million and are not a representative sample. Aloha, I had intended to do an article on this interesting character, and noticed you just created a stub a couple weeks ago. I took the liberty of expanding it and doing a DYK nomination. And thanks for the lead about the 1900 Democratic party. I found a local paper source. The Wilson book seems odd. It claims he spoke through an interpreter since he was Hawaiian, but he was at most half Hawaiian (still trying to find out ancestry?) and other sources say he spoke several languages fluently (why he published newspapers and was a diplomat).
