Riodinidae-stub badly needed

edit

Hi. Me again. I have been tempted to clean up the monumental butterfly-stub backlog of some 600 pages, but I need a stub template that does not exist on WP. That stub would be {{Riodinidae-stub}} for the hundreds of initial pages on the genera and species in this butterfly family. All of the other butterfly families have their respective stubs. Only the metalmark butterflies (family Riodinidae) are without. The problem, too, is that I do not understand the process for stub creation proposal. Would you be so kind as to help me in this case? All best wishes, --Wloveral (talk) 18:07, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks.--Wloveral (talk) 00:31, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Could you create the {{Riodinidae-stub}}? I have finished sorting all the non-Riodinidae butterfly stubs to family. The Riodinidae-stub should nest in [[Category:Riodinidae]]. I do not think an image at that small size will be much of an aid. Again, thank you for your help.--Wloveral (talk) 14:39, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Canadian Mall Stub

edit

I noticed the guidelines after I made the cat, then after reading how to do it, I gave up (seeing as it wasn't that important and I didn't really have the time). Cavenba (talkcontribs) 02:43, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

By it wasn't that important, I meant that the stub/stub cat wasn't that important. Cavenba (talkcontribs) 02:40, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stub Bot Wait Time

edit

I noticed on the (now archived) talk page at WT:WSS you mentioned having the bot wait 48 hours before tagging articles. I could do this but don't see an inherent advantage to waiting such a long period of time before tagging the article. From what I see on special:newpages we are getting about 1,500 pages a day (though this is just a rough guess, I haven't done the exact statistics on it). Assuming the average new page patroler has the Special:NewPages set to 100 entries default in Special:Prefrences (which is double the mediawiki defualt, so that's highly unlikely). That would mean that a new article would be off Special:NewPages in 37 minutes and 30 seconds ( 1500 pages per day / 100 entries per page = 15 pages per day. 24 hours / 15 pages = 0.625 hours per page. 0.625 hours * 60 minutes per hour = 37.5 minutes). If a page is off Special:NewPages you could safely consider it to be off new page patrol. If something is going to be speedied it genrally happens within the first few hours. To address the issue of underconstruction and inuse I would have the bot check back after a certian amount of time. I was wondering what advantages you would see in waiting 48 hours instead of 12 hours. -- Nn123645 (talk) 08:23, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

How to propose new stub templates?

edit

The instructions at WP:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals#Proposing new stub types - procedure only describe how to propose the category. I want to create several templates that just redirect to stub templates, but I don't see the guidelines for this. Eventually most of these should become stub categories, but it is hard to tell exactly which ones until the stub articles themselves are sorted, and the templates seem like a good way to do this.

I was looking at diffusing Category:Mathematician stubs (750+ pages, 3 subcats, 4 subsubcats, no subsubsubcats) and a fairly significant number of these are hard to diffuse because of missing stub types. The scheme is "mathematician stubs by nationality", and only 7 nationalities are available.

It seems like a good idea to put templates on the articles that are country level (if known). For not-yet-existing country templates, one would make them redirects to continent level templates, and for not-yet-existing continent templates, make a continent template that redirects to plain old {{mathematician-stub}}.

This way we can easily count which countries and continents need their own stub category.

Does this sound reasonable? Can I just go make the redirects? JackSchmidt (talk) 15:50, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

...for sticking up for me during the opera flap. The most ironic part about the discussion is that I am trained both as a librarian and a classical singer, so if anyone were to tinker with categorizing opera articles, you'd think it would be me. However, I don't intend to touch anything operatic on Wikipedia with a ten-foot pole ever again, thus my current silence. (Since Kleinzach's main complaint centers around the librettist cats, maybe we should split them off...?) Plus I'm literally across the street from Disneyland as we speak, so I'm in my happy place. <g> Have a great week! cheers, Her Pegship (tis herself) 03:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh dear. I understand that feeling. I'll throw in a prayer to the patron saint of cats (once I find out who that is...). ttfn, Her Pegship (tis herself) 23:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The stub type, which was not proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, does not meet the standard requirements for a stub type, either through being incorrectly named, ambiguously scoped, or through failure to meet standards relating to the current stub hierarchy or likely size, as explained at Wikipedia:Stub. Please feel free to make any comments at WP:SFD regarding this stub type, and in future, please consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 00:34, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Grutness, I didn't know about the oficial decision on the {{Arg-National University-stub}} resolution to obliterate it, you should know I'm not a Wiki administrator and just I'm gleaning experience for. On future occasions, being reached a significan number of Argentine universities sites, I would propose a new subcategory grounded on the state-run higher education by giving the profound meaning that this have had on the Argentine education system history. The next I'll wait for the resolution on the issue. Have a nice day. Carau (talk) 16:40, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi Grutness np with that, as you said still there are fewer National Universities to be considered as an independent stub, yet I would have propose the Argentine-university-stub be regarded independently from the South American one, of course once we gathered pass over the required 60 sites... Hello! :) Should Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/2008/June/24 be relisted back at WP:CFD/SPEEDY? It seems like there were no objections to Turkish rename. - Darwinek (talk) 12:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Parts of the NZ project

edit

Seem to be asleep = trust you are well and coping with the usual - just curious - noted after a foray into a wreck article (literal) last night that many NZ project cats are bereft of project tags - however i was wondering - class=cat or class=NA if you ever have had the interest - if not - no worries - cheers and enjoy! SatuSuro 04:37, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry - gadfium had given me a good argument for NA and I have started my chaotic tagging through the project - cheers SatuSuro 07:08, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good - I wasn't sure which was best to be honest, so I'm glad you found someone who knew! Grutness...wha? 07:58, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The issue is as gruelling as cat policing - some projects have had their templates set up for class=cat (australia - cj, scott and longhair i think) while indonesia is best with class=NA - and some projects leave me asking questions as there hasnt been adequate visits from the warlord or others to give the projects some advice re project management and assessment - but hey - i reckon new projects or old ones should be encouraged to be very clear in their project main pages as to which they have in their template and for them to say so - even if there only a few weird ones like self interested - oh well - cheers SatuSuro 08:28, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 22:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lindy fishing

edit

My intention was not advertisement, but information. This is a company that has been around for a long time and is a major part of the fishing heritage - especially in the Upper Midwest. I have reworked the article to exclude specific product references and also the list of professional fishermen associated with the brand. What else can I do? Fishn4 (talk) 16:54, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

"It may not have been your intention to write an advert, but the waqy the article was written certainly made it look like one. There were a lot of peacock terms (e.g., "the list of top walleye fishermen whose careers have been boosted by the Lindy Fishing Team reads like an all-star roster"). Compare your: Lindy Legendary Fishing Tackle produces premium fishing tackle. The Lindy Rig, Lindy’s flagship product, has made its way into the arsenals of over 40 million fishermen since the company began operation in 1968. Today, Lindy Rig is to live bait rig as Kleenex is to facial tissue. with the more neutral: Lindy Legendary Fishing Tackle is an American producer of fishing tackle. Since its founding in 1968, the company's Lindy Rig has been used by over 40 million fishermen*. You'd also need to find a citation to verify the claim marked *. Basically, since this is an encyclopedia you need to use a neutral, dispassionate viewpoint when you're writing an article. It's OK to explain what the company is and does, but try to avoid making it sound like a puff-piece! Hope that helps, Grutness...wha? 00:04, 10 June 2008 (UTC)"

Okay, well I did rewrite the whole thing. Using language much like your example and including four sources, I tried to make the piece as neutral as possible. However, my changes were not reflected on the page. Am I not allowed to write on the topic at all now because I screwed up once? Fishn4 (talk) 17:15, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:HAU, Status, and you!

edit

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:13, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: History merges

edit

The instructions are all laid out at Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves. As I found out quickly, when you try to move an article from Title A to Title B and Title B already exists, the software will automatically delete the edits of Title B for you when you move the article. Try to minimise the number of revisions you need to delete and restore as deleting and restoring pages is one of the most taxing operations in MediaWiki. Also, it's a good idea to say in the move summary that the move shouldn't be reverted. Once I was history merging Melbourne, and a well-meaning editor tried to move it back while I was working on the history merge, which resulted in Melbourne disappearing from Wikipedia for a few minutes. Maybe I'll try the same thing at Auckland one day :-). Hope this helps some. Graham87 07:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage

edit

Hello Grutness what DVD version of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage do you have? I got the "7-disc Collector's Edition, digitally remastered from Cosmos studios, 2000". It has printed "Encyclopedia Galactica" with one 'L' - both on the DVD with episode XII & XIII and all three places on the black cardboard box. --Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 07:36, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for telling me.

I am still new to using TW and NPP. I have only been using them for the past 24 hours and am still learning on what is and is not eligible. Now I know that an article like that does not meet the criteria.

Thanks again,

Pardon the intrusion but I note that you commented on the AfD discussion for Daphne Civic Center. I have subsequently expanded this article and provided a number of references to reliable third-party sources. I humbly request that you give this article a second look and see if this is sufficient to change your !vote on this matter. Small articles on Illinois settlements

edit

Hi JLG - good to see some new small articles on places in illinois. Could I ask that if you make any more youa dd {{Illinois-geo-stub}} to the bottom of them (like I've done with Zenobia, Illinois)? That way they are easier for other editors working on illinois articles to find. Thanks - and keep up the good work!

Sure. Just give me a few minutes to make sure I have everything as I want it. Right now, I'm just working on Christian County, and May Township in particular. BTW...you posted that remark to my talk page before I could even go back to check my work (I always find something wrong when I go back, no matter how thoroughly I check it when I write it). JLG 2701 01:08, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
No Problems!! I doubt I'll be doing any more. I scoured my trusty Illinois Atlas and Gazetteer, Christian County pages, and there aren't any more towns/areas in CC. I think I have enough right now trying to fill the ones I created today. Most of the info for the history of the towns is all in one place, so it won't be that hard to do. Thanks for the heads-up though!!!JLG 2701 01:24, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
