- Let me be the first to welcome you and commend you on your enthusiasm and ability to follow instructions. The Wikipedia mantra is BE BOLD. For me at least, just making an account took a great deal of courage. The next logical step in your Wikipedia indoctrination is to energize your home page. It will serve as an excellent place to learn some of the basic wiki-codes without dorking up an article. Editing skills will require some experimentation and self teaching. The easiest way to start is to visit others and “steal” some ideas. By that - I mean click the edit tab and see their html codes which you can copy and paste into yours. CAREFUL --- don’t edit their page…. COPY not cut!!!!! You can then adjust it to reflect your own personal style. Feel free to be creative. Try to provide some insight into who you are while still maintaining your Anonymity. Advice, sources and copyediting edit
Hi there,
I saw you added your name to the Wikiproject Fishes list, and eventually found my way to your school wikiproject. I am glad to see someone working in the fishy domain, and as an experienced editor and creator of fish articles (including 2 GA's), i have plenty of experience in the type of article you are creating. If you need any help be it in layout, ichthyological language, wikifying, any sources you may need or giving the article a copyedit for spelling/grammar, please feel free to ask.
Just a few hints, most of which you already have thought about:
- Use the Wikiproject Fishes page as a guide for the layout of articles in terms of headings and so on. Remember that layout is not fixed in stone, feel free to adjust it to suit the article you are working on; have a look at the GA and FA fish articles and you'll see the types of layout that are generally used. Note most articles have a bit on the taxonomy of the species. This can be very complicated if you haven't worked with the species before, so if you want help with this, just say. Also if you want a range map, i can do that also.
- I find a good source, particularly for descriptions is the FAO guides; i'm sure you've already found them (if not http://www.fao.org/fishery/sidp/3,3/en#Vol5). Fishbase is another good general source of information. Obviously, there are lots of websites with basic info on marlin, and are a good starting point. More detailed info from scientific studies can be found with google scholar, however many of the articles require subscription to access. I am able to access most of these, so if you find anything that looks good, just let me know and i'll try get it.
Finally, i think it was a good move to change to the single species, rather than the broad topic of billfish. There is a LOT of information on the species, so GA could be easily reached, and FA is achievable. Good luck!

- The range map is done; the fish is not found near the coast, so that is why the range does not extend up to the continental land masses. Also, when writing a fish name in wikipedia, it should be in all lowercase except if it has a proper noun in its name. So use 'Atlantic blue marlin' in the article.
More references edit
First of all, check to see if books has anything of interest. Search both for "Atlantic blue marlin" and "Makaira nigricans". Once you have searched, select 'Limited preview and full view' from the drop down menu. There are a lot of books, so you will have to trawl through to find the useful info.
Next, use Google scholar. This search engine archives scientific papers from journals and academic websites. Many of the papers are highly technical, and will be of no use eg biochemistry and genetics papers. Search for Makaira nigricans, it will give more results. Once you have found a paper that looks good, and has a link (a few don't have a link) open it. It will either be a full text PDF file with the entire thing attached, or an abstract (summary). In some cases you can find a full text link for the abstract, but often it will require a subscription. Don't worry, there is a lot of useful info in the abstract, and you can use that (and reference it). There are LOTS of papers for this species, more than i have seen for any other fish so you have a lot to work with. Note that some papers refer to the Pacific blue marlin - do not use these as they refer to what Fisbase accepts as Makaira mazara, a different species. Use only papers studying the fish in the Atlantic. Finally, if there is no link and it looks like a really good paper, copy the title and do a regular google search, see what it comes up with. If that fails, and you really still want it, tell me the name and source of the paper and i will have a go (there are many ways to find them if you know how). There is a MASSIVE section reviewing all aspects of the biology of the blue marlin... but it treats both the pacific and atlantic species as the same, so be careful only to use information gathered in the atlantic ocean. I'm not sure if you have been told, but use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_templates to cite references. Use only {{cite book}} or {{cite journal}}, not {{Citation}} templates.
Taxonomy edit
It looks like you have it under control, but if you go to the species fishbase page and click on the 'synonyms' section, it will give you a list of names used for the fish. You will see some of the species names are the same (the second part of the name) and the author's name is in brackets. The name that person first used for it is NOT in brackets. Other people often reclassify the organism into a new genus, but keep the specific name due to naming rules. Any names called 'junior synonyms' were created AFTER the first correct naming (in this case by Lacepede (by the way, search WP for his name and use his full name (its long!))) and are not accepted (except some exceptions, but don't worry about it). Ambiguous synonyms can not be definitively related to a single species. There are a few names there that have THREE parts to the name, called trinomials. These indicate a subspecies. It might be nice to explain people once thought these were subspecies or something. Also, when you are in the synonyms page, you can click on each name and a new page appears with a bit more information, and you can click on the species name in the aqua-blue box which will take you to the Californian Academy of Sciences fish catalog, which has even more info on each specific name including where the holotype was taken from and the name of the publication it was reported in. Lastly, if you check a page like Green jack, you will see a synonyms section can be added to the taxobox, which can be used, but you might want to only add the 'original combination' names as given by fishbase, otherwise it could stretch out a bit.
Hope this helps a bit. Taxonomy can be hopelessly confusing sometimes, but you get used to it if you stick with it. Hope this helps. Kare Kare (talk) 06:51, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
