Re:Kpjas' RFA

Hi Firsfron, and thank you for your message. I have no doubt that Kpjas is an experienced, knowledgeable editor who would not abuse the admin tools - my reason for voting neutral stemmed from the fact that in his response to the questions, I didn't think the tasks he mentioned wanting to work on were those in which the admin tools would be necessary. I agree with the points raised by other editors at the RFA stating that had his adminship status and astounding number of edits on the Polish wiki been brought up initially, the early votes would likely have been different. I see that since those points have been mentioned, his RFA is now at 79% support. I will continue to check the RFA page and Kpjas' recent contributions throughout the next few days, and I would be open to changing my vote to support if Kpjas' contributions continue to be promising and if more support is needed toward Saturday. Actually, my oppose was more due to lack of activity, not inexperience. 5000 edits over 5 years really isn't that much (and I think that "one edit every 8 hours" thing is a bit misleading). I don't think it's much to ask that administrators on en.wiki are active participants in the goings on on en.wiki. I was planning on changing to neutral anyway, because when it comes down to it, there's no reason to assume he would misuse the tools. -- Steel 10:30, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

You may want to add {{NUMBEROFADMINS}} to your page to keep track of the exact number. There have been a bunch of recent desysoppings that has held the number down a bit to the current figure of 859. Yes, such milestones are fun to keep track of, and we if mentioned now we could get a bunch of people to apply for RFA now in hopes of being #1000. Greetings. This user page is currently showing up in many article categories due to the templates on the page, and user pages are not supposed to be categorized in that manner. One possible fix would be to subst all the templates on this page, and then remove all the categories, or you could also ask an admin for a speedy delete of the entire page if you don't really need it. CFIF

I am a bit worried about CFIF, since he seems to have a history of uncivil behavior and making accusations without proof. The incident with Displaced Brit and Lost Knob seems to be the latest in an ongoing series, something that I discovered when looking at his history during his RFC. I left him a note that I felt he was really ignoring [[{WP:AGF]] quite often. He has made some good edits, but this kind of behavior may be his downfall. He seems to have made at least two false accusations in the past few months and makes another baseless accusation on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paul Dellegatto in what appears to be an attempt to skew an AFD of an article he created, something he has done more than once before. Re:CFIF

Thanks for your note. Another thing I don't get is his almost instant invovation of "Spotteddogsdotorg sockpuppet" in television related AFD votes. Given the evidence I have seen and the bit of investigating I have done, the person behind User:Mr. Scott Brown, Scott Brown, a very disgruntled person with a series of grudges, against the tvnewstalk.net website and someone who uses the handle nyviewer there. Apparently CFIF also has a grudge against this nyviewer and he would stand as yet another possible suspect in this case, or at least someone with a hidden agenda. I know for a fact that this nyviewer is not and I have actually communicated with him and was told it was Scott Brown and was shown various communications by Brown to the domain's owner and some server logs he showed me. All of this surfaced when I was investigating User:Displaced Brit's allegations against CFIF. Mr. Scott Brown is a more likely suspect, ginve the little thing we in the journalism industry call facts and evidence, plus something we call gut feeling. The person he accuses of being the ring leader did have a Wikipedia account, which was not on the list of the alleged sockpuppets, that he said got either got hacked or lost the password to which lead him to give up on Wikipedia. I spent enough of my time investigating this crap, basically engaging in what I do for my day job, I seemed to forgot why I even got on here to begin with and it has ceased being fun and I frankly think CFIF is suffering from some sort of parinoia with his sockpuppet allegations, albiet less than Mr. Scott Brown. The only good that has come of this is that I have discoverd a great 1970s cop show called The Sweeney, which I have just spent an absurd amount of money getting on DVD from the UK. Re: Townships in Iowa

Hi Elkman,

Back in July, you disambiguated the article on Monti, Iowa, changing the link to township to civil township. Somehow, the article on Monti fell off my userlist, and I did not notice the change until now. Unfortunately, it's not correct: Iowa has no civil townships, only survey townships. I have reverted this change, which was no big deal. However, since you used AWB to make the change, I wonder how many other articles you made the switch to now have this incorrect disambiguation: any article concerning places in Iowa will definitely be mistaken. Do you recall how many articles you AWB'd? Were there many on articles relating to the state of Iowa? I think I took the reference to "Newton Township" as meaning that it was a civil township, not (just) a survey township. I'm used to townships in Minnesota, where a civil township (like Northfield Township, Minnesota) is usually coterminous with a survey township (like T 111 N, R 20 W). That's not really always the case, though -- I think Breitung Township, Minnesota spans more than two survey townships. In any case, here's an approximate link to the disambiguations I did. I think Monti, Iowa is the only one in Iowa that I did; for the most part, I stuck to Minnesota and a few other oddball states.

Note that the link to these contributions includes the start of a major hissy fit that I was having against SPUI. That was probably a much bigger mistake than the disambiguation I was doing. User:Mr. Scott Brown

Hi,

I closed the debate after the regular five-day interval (I know some guidelines say 8 days now, but I stick with the older standard, also written down somewhere in deletion policy, which is common practice of other regular MfD closers as well.) I noticed your comments in sympathy to the user, but I also noted that they were not the consensus view. It appeared that the consensus did not feel extending courtesy to a suspected sockpuppet was warranted. I see no reason to dispute this conclusion. The number of commenters was quite typical for an MfD, rarely as "popular" as its AfD cousin.

As always, though, I am open to any message from the user concerned to restore temporarily his content for his use. I also have no problem with your userfying the content, if you really desire such. Emprically speaking, you are simply incorrect to say that the number of comments was unusually small. Three definite deletes + nomination + Splash's inferred support for deletion is more than most of these discussion get, as could be shown through an objective analysis.

As to the rest, we simply disagree regarding the level of courtesy due this user, or rather about what consensus said on this question (I have no personal view at all.) I found a consensus contrary to your expressed view, and you object. Such disagreements happen from time to time, and there is no reason for either of us to think the other is being absurd. (I take it from the tone of your reply that you cannot understand my position, which is unfortunate, but I assure you that I am rational person, just as you are.) You are always welcome to take the matter to deletion review; personally, I'd find that a bit odd, given my willingness to undelete temporarily for the user in question, if he asks reasonably (a willingness I have for every userpage MfD I close in deletion.) You asserted that WP:BITE applied and that the matter was out of process in the debate itself. These assertions were not supported by consensus, which seemed to hold that notice on the userpage itself was sufficient. While I did briefly check the talk page, you're quite right that I gave little weight to anything there, as relevant claims should be made in the debate proper. One last tiny bit on this. My understanding of English is that the phrased "frowned upon" is much weaker than "prohibited." A consensus is perfectly capable of forgiving a requirement that is only "frowned upon." I continue to believe this deletion was perfectly in process, and your stridency in this matter surprises me. Seriously, heart-to-heart and without continuing our "argument", the reason I don't feel bad about this is that the only thing I require from the user is that he contact me and ask nicely. I would post a message to him to that effect, but if (as some suspect) he is a bad-faith user, this might be courting a problem. I don't consider requiring him to contact me a heavy inconvenience, and I will be very nice to him if he does. :) I do respect you for "standing up for the newbie"; I'm not an unfriendly guy, and I look forward to working with you in the future. Thanks for your post. Have you tried asking people on billboard.com about these certifications? I was sufficiently intrigued by this discrepancy and did some Googling but couldn't find any site with RIAA-related information mentioning AoB RIAA diamond award. I am surprised that Arista bothered to apply for diamond certification for an act that's not signed to their label anymore. Actually, I seem to recall reading about The Sign getting the diamond award, but why RIAA doesn't mention it anymore anywhere on it's site is a bit of a mystery.

Thanks for your reply. If you go to billboard.com you'll see they have several editors who answer questions from the readers, including about the sales. Regarding RIAA certification, it's not only the application fee: RIAA have to audit the information supplied by the label and it also involves payments for their services. And since Ace of Base was no longer signed to Arista in 2002, I find it a bit strange that Arista applied for the certification for their former act.

First experience with vandalism

I recently visited the page that I created for Grallator and was disgusted by the vandalism that I witnessed there. You can visit it and see for yourself (at your own risk). I dont know how to delete what they did or lock the page from such edits, but if you could help me, that would be great.

I don't think the logos are violating any rules, since they are only being shown next to their corresponding network, just like on their page. it is not being displayed on a template....however, i don't know why they cannot be shown on a template. Dispute resolution help

Hi. I found your name on the member list for WP:IOWA, and I was hoping you could help me get a better understanding of the dispute resolution process or perhaps help me in an informal manner. A couple of editors have recently added some irrelevant—and in some cases offensive—information to the Ottumwa High School article. While I'm sure that most school articles (especially high school articles) often experience this type of nonsensical editing, an attempt to politely negotiate with Imfromottumwa (talk · contribs) seems to confirm that he/she'll not be reasonable when discussing edits. Nemegt

Thanks for feedback - not quite sure what you meant about 'so many articles' - not sure how we could reduce them, as they either refer to different geological formations (Nemegt, Djadochta etc.) or to different aspects of the region (e.g. topography and geology/paleontology). I went on the record at WP:AN/I that I felt a community ban on FSF was, in my opinion, not the best solution for Wikipedia, because of FSF's thousands of good contributions to the encyclopedia in article space. Featured article candidate review: Buffy article

Removing personal attacks or other potential offenses

Hi, I just noticed that you didn't like when Radiant replaced someones inflammatory comment after someone else removed it. I just wanted to add my say in, because this has been an issue before on talk pages i've been on. While personal attacks are to be avoided, I find that removing them increases the problem rather than abating it. Especially when people are discussing the problem at hand, things get very confusing when comments that one person talks about magically disappear. Outsiders wonder whos lying, or if they're lying, or what the hell's going on.

So for me, removing any comment is bad, and should simply never happen. Insensitive comments like "shut the fuck up" are history of someones character, and help others judge how to respond to that user. Anyways, that just my opinion - I always replace comments that I notice have been deleted. Fresheneesz 01:10, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
