Edits applied today. edit

Dear Ficheall,
My name is Patrick and I welcomed you to Wikipedia yesterday (see above). I can see you are being bold and that you have already been working on several articles, which is great; thank you for your enthusiasm!
I am contacting you specifically regarding the edits you applied to the articles on the Irish bouzouki and Sweeney's Men, in particular. While I appreciate the enthusiasm with which you applied several changes to these articles, I would like to propose that you consider working with me for a while, so that I can help you with applying these changes in accordance with Wikipedia's editorial guidelines; personally, I'd like to enable you to become an experienced editor as quickly as possible.
For example, here are a few points to bear in mind when editing names:

  1. We use a person's full name only the first time it is mentioned; thereafter, we always refer to that person by his/her surname, and never by the person's first name; this is explained in the Manual of Style, under section MOS:SURNAME. For example, we refer the first time to 'Andy Irvine' and subsequently always to 'Irvine', but never to 'Andy'.
  2. We only link someone/something once in an article; so, if an article refers several times to Dónal Lunny, we only link the first occurrence, and after that, we only use 'Lunny', unlinked. This is explained in WP:REPEATLINK.
  3. We try and be careful to link to the correct article, for example in the case where people have the same name. For 'Andy Irvine', there is the musician we all know and love   and there is the rugby player. In this case, when we code Andy Irvine, we actually reach a page where all these different people are listed. Therefore, if you wanted to mention either of these two people, you would need to code [[Andy Irvine (musician)|Andy Irvine]] (for the musician) and [[Andy Irvine (rugby player)|Andy Irvine]] for the other.

There are other aspect of editing to keep in mind, such as:

  • How to create reference citations, and I would suggest you consider taking the time to learn how to code these, because they are essential to make sure that everything we add into the encyclopedia is verifiable. Generally, we try not to insert 'raw' urls. There are a few different methods and templates for coding ref tags, and we all needed to learn how to do this properly when we were beginners.
  • We generally never remove content that was already cited, because of the guideline on Achieving neutrality:
As a general rule, do not remove sourced information from the encyclopedia solely on the grounds that it seems biased. Instead, try to rewrite the passage or section to achieve a more neutral tone.
So, basically, we try and remain aware of the fact that one (or many) editors have already contributed to an article, and we generally strive to improve it with that in mind.
  • One final and very important point to remember about our encyclopedia, is that we are not allowed to add content that is not verifiable; also known as original research. In a way, it is very easy to understand: everything that we add must be verifiable via a cited, reliable source. In other words, even Wikipedia editors who are experts in some field or other, cannot add content which is not accompanied by a reference to a reliable source.

I hope you will appreciate that I am trying to help you to become more aware of the guidelines under which we are all expected to contribute here. I hope, therefore, that you will accept my assistance in the positive spirit in which it is being offered. My commitment to you is that I will do my best to guide you and answer your questions as clearly and helpfully as I can. As a first step, I would recommend that you try and find the time read the Welcome! material I added in the section above, and also the various guidelines that I have linked to, from this new section.
Finally, thank you for reading this long message till the end, but there was a lot to cover.
I look forward to hearing from you, at your convenience. Until then, please keep well.
With kind regards for now;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 00:23, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for September 2 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Irish bouzouki, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Andy Irvine. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:05, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks DPL bot
That's fixed, thanks for pointing the error out. I'm also having trouble uploading a picture. I'd really appreciate if you could help.
Alex
Dear Alex,
I left a message for you at my talk page this morning, and you should have received a notification pointing you to it. In any case, I am adding the present post with a link to what I wrote to you there; so, please click on 'at my talk page' in the previous sentence; thank you.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 13:25, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Please don't forget to sign your posts, by simply typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically add your username and a time/date stamp. Thank you.
Dear Patrick
I'm slowly getting the hang of this. I've fixed that error. Someone else pointed it to me earlier today so fixed it.
My account isn't confirmed yet and that's why the file won't upload. No worries, just have to be patient and try again tomorrow. In the meantime I'll have a cup of tea!!!
THANKS...

Dear Alex,
Thank you for your latest post, above.
Yes, it takes a while to get familiar with the way things work here, but we all get there, eventually!
Please forgive me for writing so often, but I have just left you another post at my talk page, to make sure you wait for Rob, and I am explaining why there. Thank you for your patience with me, but it's really important that you don't proceed without Rob's advice and guidance. I am sure you'll want to do this right in order to succeed without too much administrative hastle for doing it wrong, out of innocence. Thank you.
With kind regards for now;

"First" Irish bouzouki? ツ edit

Dear Alex,
When you have returned from your long walk ( ), you might consider that Dónal's Abnett bouzouki was actually the second Irish bouzouki, the first being the one (also a flat-back instrument) that Johnny Moynihan purchased from John Bailey in the days of Sweeney's Men, a few years before Dónal met Andy, let alone commissioned his bouzouki from Peter Abnett.
I had already documented the advent of the John Bailey bouzouki in the Johnny Moynihan article, and also provided the relevant extracts from pages 67 and 170 in Leagues O'Toole book (The Humours of Planxty), in this section of the Irish bouzouki talk page (see my post under first indented header: "Hello '74.95.43.249',").
When you've had the chance to read this content, you might conclude that the history is already well documented, and I would therefore suggest that the caption of your new photo should probably read: either "Second Irish bouzouki", or simply "Irish bouzouki"?
Thank you for letting me know what you think?
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 15:41, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dear Patrick, I'm smiling again after a little walk!
I've sent the quote from O'Toole's book The Humours of Plenty to Dónal and have asked that he consult with Andy. We'll figure this one out...
I'll let you know when he responds.
Ficheall (talk) 15:57, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear Alex,
Sounds excellent; thank you for taking the trouble of being so thorough! At the very least, you're talking to the very sources who informed Leagues O'Toole, and I don't anticipate any contention about this.
Another thought that occurs to me: since you live in Dublin, you might consider asking Moynihan for a photo of his John Bailey bouzouki (he played it during Andy's 70th birthday gigs in 2012), and then upload that second photo into the article as well... This way, you'd have documented both the first and second Irish bouzoukis ... Just a thought.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 16:20, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear Patrick,
Brilliant idea, will do.

Uploading Photos edit

Hi Alex, @Pdebee: said you could use some help. Here is the advice that I gave him a while back about loading photos: "Hi Patrick, here's a quick overview of what it takes to load pics. First for commons, the pics need to be "free", which ideally means that you took them, or otherwise it means that somebody published them under a free CC license. A good place to look is Flickr where you can specifically search for pics with the right license. Non-free pics should be loaded here to English wiki, but you have to pass the fair use test. If it's reasonable that someone could take a free pic, it does not qualify, which is why you don't see such pics of living people, but if someone has deceased it is no longer possible to take a free pic, so you can load them. Likewise, if a band has broken up, the same argument can be made. The thing to do is, look at other pics that have been loaded and review the justification that was used, as that might give you some idea as to what will work and what won't. Hope that helps, Rob.". In your case, you have a pic taken by someone else that you want to upload, so that's a little trickier. The best solution would be to get Dónal Lunny to load the pic himself, as he is the author, but if you want to load the pic, load it at Commons using the wizard and follow the prompts for a pic taken by someone else. The wizard will ask you to email proof to the OTRS folks and they will validate that Dónal owns the pic and gave you the right to release it under a CC license. Robman94 (talk) 17:29, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Robman94: Dear Rob,
Thank you very much for your cogent advice to Alex, and thank you also for helping me, as I was trying to ensure Alex was informed of precisely what he has to do in his specific case.
With kind regards;

Repeated deletion of images from the article Dónal Lunny edit

Dear Alex,

you have been deleting images from the article Dónal Lunny for the second time now, without giving a valid reason for doing so. If you keep on doing so, I will have to report that as Vandalism. I also stated my request for explanation in my edit summary.

Regards, Hinnerk R (talk) 17:44, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dear Hinnerk R
Apologies but I am new to Wikipedia and am endeavouring to help Dónal, Anne Haverty, Úna O Boyle and Anthony Cronin to keep the information on their pages correct. They have asked me to. I had no intention to offend. Dónal has said that he was not considered in the publication of said photos and thus did not give his permission. He has asked that they be removed until full permission is given by him or his management. I do hope you understand and forgive my rather blunt and incompetent form of editing.
Kind regards,
Alex

The photo from Vicipéid has been approved: "Donal_Lunny-www.TG4.ie-855950503_87dd5a3b7b.jpg|thumb|border|left|[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLr_PP4MME"
Dear Alex,
the photo ga:Íomhá:Donal Lunny-www.TG4.ie-855950503 87dd5a3b7b.jpg you mentioned has no free licence, it is used in the Irish language Wikipedia under "presumed Fair Use". It was stored in the Irish language Wikipedia, not in the general media archive Wikimedia Commons, presumably for the lack of a proper license. If you copy that image to another language version or Wikimedia Commons it will very likely be deleted for copyright violation, unless you can present a proper license given by the copyright holder.
Kind regards, Hinnerk R (talk) 13:01, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear Alex,
if you edit a Wikipedia article on behalf of the person the article is about please read the following articles first, as this could become troublesome:
Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not
As long as you "stick to the rules" there should be nothing to worry about.
If Dónal Lunny (or anyone else) thinks that images on Wikipedia violate his personal rights, he can file a request for deletion at Wikimedia Commons, the media archive for all Wikipedia language versions.
The question if an "image release" is necessary, is complicated and depends on the circumstances where, when and by whom the photo in question was taken. Most artists I have come across welcome photos on Wikipedia. If Dónal Lunny or his management would try to influence or even take control of the Wikipedia article about him, that would most likely not be welcomed by Wikipedia authors.
Kind regards, Hinnerk R (talk) 18:49, 2 September 2016 (UTC) (Sorry, didn't mean to be impolite, hence the second edit. Hinnerk R (talk) 18:55, 2 September 2016 (UTC))Reply
Hey Alex, I can see where the mis-understanding is, both for yourself and Dónal. When someone takes a photo, they own the copyright, not the person in the photo, and they have the right to license their photos as they see fit. In this case, Hinnerk took some photos of Dónal and released them under a CC license, which makes them eligible for use on Wikipedia. No permission from Dónal is required. Furthermore, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it's not a Facebook page or someone's personal web page, so the subject of the article (ie, Dónal) doesn't get any say in what is or isn't included in an article on him. This happens all the time, people who are the subject of articles often want to have some control over the content of an article on them, but that's just not how it works. That being said, we do take BLP pages very seriously, so we strive to ensure that all the content is accurate and verifiable. Robman94 (talk) 03:35, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Draft article on 'Úna O Boyle' edit

Dear Alex,
I hope you're keeping well? I noticed that you have been developing the subject draft, and I just wanted to say that it's looking good; well done. I wonder if you'd welcome a bit of help with it, in which case I would use its talk page to make a couple of suggestions? However, I don't want you to feel I'm stalking you...
When you're ready, just let me know your preference, and I won't interfere in your efforts in this case if you'd rather I didn't. Thanks, Alex.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 09:26, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oh Mmmn, I'd love help. As you know I'm kinda working from scratch but I'm definitely learning. Right, so if I go in the talk page of article I might get some assistance. If you could give me notes i'd really REALLY appreciate it. Thanks Ficheall (talk) 12:40, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear Alex,
Thank you for your prompt reply and for being open to suggestions. I have now set up the usual talk page header templates, an action which has also automatically populated some categories that apply to the subject. I will now open the first new section with an initial suggestion. More very soon...
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 13:31, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
P.S.: OK; I have now added the first section with my initial comments; over to you, Alex.
