Welcome edit

Hi Asa! Welcome to Wikipedia!

I take issue with your use of the term "node."  :-) On Wikipedia there are no "nodes." You must have us confused with Everything2, or something.  :-) --LMS

Fair enough! What term should i use instead? Articles? Items? Bits? -- Asa

All pages are pages, but not all pages are articles. Encyclopedic content should be on all and only article pages. Comment thereon is on Talk Pages. Hope this helps! --LMS

Princes Mononoke is amazing, isn't it? I'll have to make it a point to look for the others. Perhaps you could write up a bit about Miyazaki Hayao? The page for Japanese cinema is an embarassment right now. (And yes, I've been the only contributor.)  :-) Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia. --Koyaanis Qatsi

Hey, I forgot about that request. Sorry, I've had many many irons in the fire lately (grad school, working two jobs, filming a documentary, and researching a second one--ak!) so I've not been on Wikipedia much. Thanks very much for the article; and I like the Unicode in it--now that I have the font. <g> Thanks again --Koyaanis Qatsi

cheers  :) the unicode was not me thou. neither were all the Romaji names in in filmography (thou i did intend to do them at some point - the beauty of Wikipedia!) Next i need to expand this a bit more and make a start on each of his films - want to help? -- Asa

More to do? Maybe it will help me keep my sanity watching Kiki's Delivery Service repeatedly.  :-) I'll help if I can, but I'm not making any promises. --Koyaanis Qatsi

"boring mold"!? subjective!. How on earth can you expect people to talk about films without critical comment? If I said 'Viva Kneivel' is a truly dire film, it is subjective, but to not say it would by a lie and unkind to people who might otherwise see the film.

nonsense. This is an encypclopedia, not a critical journal or magazine. -- Asa

You have a small problem coming your way, Asa, and the problem is your name. You are probably aware of the pre-Christian derivation of it; I have an article coming up for the Norse Mythology block concerning the Asa: I fear it directs to your namespace. I'll note this with Larry. sjc

OK, what do you and Larry sugest I do? I don't mind changing my user name to Asa Winstaley (full name) and removing my stuff from Asa, moving to Asa Winstanley. I would prefer this to Wikipedians/Asa. Also, i would like to keep a link to Asa Winstanley on Asa so that all the links to my name in histories and Recent Changes are not totally broken. Hows that? Will wait for you and/or Larry to reply b4 acting on this. cheers.

(p.s. My name is pre-Christian - Hebrew! Asa was also a king in the OT, so maybe i should have thought of that to before i claimed thee space for myself! ah well live and learn) --Asa

Yeah, I spotted that as well. But then my viewpoint is post-Christian... :-) sjc

after futher investigation: seems it was The Cunctator who put my name as a sub page of Wikipedians, thou i assumed for some reason it was you. Also seems he is the only one (that i can find) that uses this particular scheme. is this an upcoming standard or something? I tend not to keep up with Wikipedia policy... I would prefer Asa Winstanley.

One more thing: Asa is not just my Wiki name its my real name :) -- Asa

No, it's not an upcoming standard. Asa Winstanley is all yours. :) --Stephen Gilbert

Why don't you just use ~~~ to sign your name instead of creating articles? It seems cleaner to me. cheers Dori 05:44 17 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean. That is how I sign my name. Are you calling me biased or something? AW

Death through "European diseases" cannot be called genocidal. They didn't deliberately set out to infect native populations. Mintguy 10:35 17 Jul 2003 (UTC)~

Good point. Looking into this, I can find no reference to imported diseases being a significant source of deaths in the native population during that period, so have altered that section (History of Haiti). The part about disease was never mine, I merely added the word European, assuming that that was what was intended. Disease or no, there is no avoiding the genocial campaign of domination an servitude over the Arawaks that look place. AW

Church of Christ edit

Hi there, Asa. Noticed you because I was looking for pages that link to church of Christ. I'm a member, too.

Do you by any chance know Keith Sisman? Jdavidb 02:58, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi :) I know a little of him, but have never met him. AW

Anarchist Symbolism page edit

Hi there. I have a slight dispute with you on the subject of the Anarchist Symbols page. I don't suppose you could pop on over to the talk page for that topic to discuss? --Pmetzger 18:52, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Main namespace cleanup edit

Heya, I've moved Asa Winstanley/Todo to User:Asa Winstanley/old-Todo. There's some edit history, so perhaps you want to keep it. Otherwise just delete it (or ask an admin to do so). --fvw* 19:14, 2004 Dec 14 (UTC)

Um... ta, I think :) I'm ok with deleting it. Just don't know how to go about asking for that to be done. AW 20:27, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi Asa, thanks for your note. I'm not familiar with the dispute, and probably shouldn't get involved in discussing compromises. I protected it because of reverts by an anon IP belonging to a user who's been causing trouble on several pages for several months, using different IP addresses and user names. I doubt he'll compromise on much, because he isn't editing in good faith, but by all means give it a try. Let me know when you want to edit the page. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 17:53, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Saints Wikiproject edit

I noted that you have been contributing to articles about saints.

You are invited to participate in Saints WikiProject, a project dedicated to developing and improving articles about saints. We are currently discussing prospects for the project. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

I also invite you to join the discussion on prayers and infoboxes here: Prayers_are_NPOV.

Thanks! --evrik 19:10, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hebron edit

Hi Asa, The caption change you made on the Hebron page is problematic because the page has traditionally used the caption that was originally printed with the photo in the source. Also--who knows what the soldiers are doing--the picture cuts it off. elizmr 22:51, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well you can't have it both ways - the original caption says they are "clashing" with Palestinian youth - a rediculous propaganda term which implies that kids chucking stones are somehow equal to fully armed soldiers. It's pretty clear from the fact that they are taking positions and pointing their rifles, that they are shooting - and this is what "clashing" implies too. As a compromise I will accept "Israeli soldiers shoot at stone throwing Palestinian youth in Hebron". AW
It is not really up to me. The page has traditionally used the caption the photo was orig published with. Someone used to change it to something more NPOV all the time (youth to militants) and it was restored as vandalism. Maybe your version will be allowed to stay, who knows. elizmr 13:25, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Linux edit

Hi, Asa. I think that a little more work on Linux would bring it to Featured Article status. I would be grateful for your comments here. Thanks. Axl 12:33, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is a better image of AMarzel which is also free in commons (Image:Baruch Marzel1.JPG). I replaced it with the one currently in Baruch Marzel and suggest you propose the pic you uploaded for deletion. Good day, DGtal 07:23, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see you used the pic in an effective way in Uri Avnery. Nice job. DGtal 20:19, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I had to revert back a couple versions to get back the material you mistakenly deleted. Please add any comments you wish now. If you want your old comments back you can copy them from the old revisions at the history link there:

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Murderavnery1-cr.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Murderavnery1-cr.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:22, 4 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Marwan-barghouti.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Marwan-barghouti.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Superm401 - Talk 17:31, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:Hearst-hibernia.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Hearst-hibernia.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. howcheng {chat} 16:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I hope you don't mind edit

I've just used you as an example of non-notability (ie. Wikipedia Criteria), with regard to why there shouldn't be an article on Ray Joseph Cormier. I chose your name completely at random, then googled - I wasn't expecting a Wikipedia user to turn up in the matches. Clinkophonist (talk) 18:25, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your user and talk pages edit

Hello, I have just restored old edits from Wikipedia databases from 2001 and 2003 to your user and user talk pages, so that their earliest edits are part of the historical record. In the case of your user page, I undeleted it, did the import, then re-deleted again. No personal information has been revealed by these actions, and I've made sure that the edits are under your current username. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
