OK, so maybe it shouldn't apply to others. But I do have to account for my own failures as an editor here. I'll try to keep WP:CIVIL and WP:POINT in mind, and maybe just keep my mouth shut. Backcountry

As far as National Parks in the United States, backcountry refers to areas that cannot be accessed by a road vehicle, or, to be more precise, areas that the public is not permitted to access by road vehicle. Therefore, all visitor centers, lodges and campgrounds that one can drive to are in the front-country. When Congress decided in 1964 to start creating Wilderness areas on already federally protected lands, the objective was to set aside areas that were remote from the front-country and to preserve them so that further modifications and improvements would not happen, thereby ensuring that no vehicles of a motorized nature (including bicycles), oil, gas, mineral extraction and logging would not happen, and no buildings or other modifications would be permitted...so Wilderness is the ultimate backcountry. The term backcountry is best applied in the United States as all areas that the public may not drive their vehicle to to access. I would consider that an island one must sail to to get to is backcountry, unless that island is so built up, that it is too tame to quaify otherwise.--MONGO 20:38, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

MN history and TC Parks

I don't have a lot of interest in Battle Creek Park; I just thought that its absence in Wikipedia was glaring to me. I thought about doing it after writing articles for Airway Beacon, Indian Mounds Park, Minnesota, and Carver's Cave. I think Theodore Wirth certainly deserves an article. I think my next few articles will be about people who helped develop Minnesota. I'll add references in History of Minnesota as needed. Is there a list of categories somewhere? For example, is there a category for people who are of historical significance in Minnesota? I'm pretty green at this and appreciate suggestions/corrections. Thanks. User talk:Appraiser

Elkman, I would advise not feeding the troll here. I don't think anyone is going to start moving the MN highway articles against the strong consensus of the state project, which even the die-hard road warriors finally accepted. There are plenty of editors and admins here (such as myself) who are more than willing to take the actions needed to resolve this problem without your needing to get involved. It's muchly appreciated. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I'm almost done with the Florida NHRPs! I'm trying to figure what my next kooky OCD project is gonna be.  :)

Hey, if you want any thoughts on how to do the Minnesota NHRP entries faster, gimme a holler. I use Microsoft Excel for a lot of the tedious repetitive data entry formatting, and I'd be happy to share ideas.

ratings

I thought I would rank a few articles and feel it out to start. So I have just been going on gut feel but I quickly realized that we probably need to agree on what importance cities, parks, lakes etc are. This is what I think: townships low, cities should get mid, except for the major areas (st.cloud, rochester, mankato) which would get high. I think Minneapolis/St.Paul/Twin cities should get top. State parks would probably follow the same ranking, most would get mid except the ones that are known outside of minnesota or are the most visited, like I think splitrock probably needs a high. I think anything that might show up in a normal encyclopedia should get "top" such as minnesota and History of Minnesota since the 1.0 project is using this to put together a publishable encylopedia. I also think that things that "define" minnesota should get ranked as high/top. What are your thoughts? -Ravedave ^{(help name my baby)} 05:10, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Elkman, thanks for the welcome you dropped on my Talk page! I'm new to editing Wikipedia, so I'm sure I'll find those links handy. I'm interested in updating Minnesota pages and noticed the Wikipedia:WikiProject Minnesota project...and that you just had a meetup. Did anyone jot down a summary of that meeting? I'd like to help. One question: I've randomly added the Minnesota project tag to some Minnesota related pages, but I'm not sure if that is really helpful, is the goal to have those tags on any page that is Minnesota related?, thanks! I swear I'm not wiki-stalking, MN managment plan for historic bridges (PDF) has an image on page 29 of 136 and an exec summary of the bridge on page 97. Page 118 says it is located at 44°16′58″N 92°25′06″W. --Dual Freq 02:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

The ID number (5827) is its identification number in the National Bridge Inventory. nationalbridges.com has a list that gives bridge locations, as long as you know the route number and city (or at least county) you want to search for. The MNDOT web site has a Transportation Data and Analysis section that you could explore if you really want to get into the technical side of things. On the other hand, the link that Dual Freq provided above has a lot more historic information about that particular bridge, and it has a lot of excellent information on preservation of historic bridges. Thanks for the pointers, I added an image and article for this bridge. I guess I still have a question. As I understand it, the doc referenced by User:Dual Freq is not public domain since (from Public Domain: ... works commissioned by the government but created by a contractor are still subject to copyright... Why in the hell am I wasting time writing articles about Minnesota history and Minnesota historical figures when I could be writing articles about some 16-year-old high school student or stirring up trouble by arguing for the deletion of an organization? Of course, by the same token, someone could ask why bother writing about Chinese art or history when I could be writing about things in entirely the wrong language or spending time deleting pages that affect no one at all? Is this all about the naming dispute with SPUI or is something else involved as well? You kindly welcomed me when I was a new user, and I'd hate to see some silly little dispute drive you away. • Multiple things:
  • I shouldn't have gotten involved with the MfD for Esperanza. I'm not sure why I thought my opinion was relevant. This is a minor matter.
  • I had absolutely no right to propose Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Elaragirl/a -- I should have talked the issue over first. Or, maybe still, I should have minded my own business. This is the part I can't make any excuses for.
  • I read Special:Newpages and I see a lot of entries about people making pages for themselves ("Cody is a high school student in Modesto, California and he's really cool!") or their bands (usually with a MySpace link). Josiah Snelling, meanwhile, never made his own page. It seems like Cody is more interested in reading about himself than some long-dead guy who built a stone fort near the airport.
  • I still can't ride through the rock gardens at Lebanon Hills Regional Park, or ride fast enough with the rest of the group. Not a Wikipedia matter, but it is another thing I've done wrong lately.

The naming dispute about Minnesota highways isn't a concern for me any more. I made a load of bad edits in that episode, but since the matter has been decided (albeit with bad feelings in some cases), I haven't done anything to watch over it.

As far as my page, Elkman, I'd happily get rid of it rather than lose you as a Wikipedian. I saw nothing wrong with your AfD of it. I'm stressed, you're stressed, and after looking at the trainwreck at the highway pages, I'm not surprised you're totally frustrated. As for the newpages....some people are idiots. Since it's a problem with my behavior, and/or my inability to handle frustration in a constructive way when something goes wrong, I'm not sure what anyone else can do to help. It's not really even about the edit war with SPUI any more, though I certainly did a ton of bad things in that case. If I could learn to manage stress in a way that didn't harm Wikipedia, that might help. And I really do need to figure out how to keep my nose out of other people's business that doesn't affect me, like the signature wars, the MfD for Esperanza, and goodness knows how many other things I should have just ignored.

Also, the comments above about Lebanon Hills Regional Park and Wazee Lake are relevant, in regard to various failures I had recently at both locations. National register of Historic Places

I notice that you're adding {{WikiProject National Register of Historic Places}} to places of histrical significance, but in some cases they are not listed on the List of Registered Historic Places in Minnesota. Are you trying to follow the list, or expanding it to places that perhaps should be on the list? Appraiser 13:44, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

I understand your request. I am only posting the data to 'boron additive' now, and there will be no product 'promotion'. I am only an avid user of the additive - not a representative or advertiser.

Please take into consideration the fact that this is not pseudo-science, but is in fact internationally recognized by scientists in many laboratories. I do feel there should be a link to the only known distributor, for the use or getting more information or obtaining the product for use.

I will tag holdon until I become more familiar with citations, so I can make the reports and other resources linked clearly and understandably.

Question unanswered from last month

Nothing will help. Once a bad editor, always a bad editor. Once an editor with a block log, always an editor with a block log. And the offenses that led to this block log (and those that led up to last July's fiasco) won't go away, either.
